So my grandfather's yarzait ceremony's coming up and we'll be going to the synagogue to observe it just like every year. But this year is different. It is the first year since I came out to my old friends at hebrew school, and I'm afraid I'll run into them. Needless to say most of them didn't take it all that well. I won't go into the details because that's not important. Plus I never felt comfortable at these memorial services. Should I suck it and and go for my Zayde? Or should I just stay home and watch the candle? I seriously am conflicted here.

Well, I would say go to the service.

But, I feel the best way to go would be to think: What is the meaning of going to the service, and what is the risk of going worth? Which is more important to you?

Also, how close were you to your Zayde? And if you go and it works out badly, will part of you blame your Zayde?

Well I never knew him, and of course I won't blame him for something he has nothing to do with, but I am still worried.

If you don't feel comfortable at a synagogue for whatever reason. Don't go. If you're self conscious or just plain nervous of being judged, then don't go.

You can do Yarzit in the privacy and comfort of your own home, as well as almost every other traditional ritual.

So if you don't want to, you don't have too.

HASHEM, Family, Self, Peers... That is the order of importance.
