So, I have a region band audition tomorrow. The way my region does it, the clarinets are divided in to 3 different rooms of thirty or so each. Cuts are picked from each etude, and one by one, you're called up to play the cut. So, you go up and play three separate times.
After that's over, you wait. After a couple of hours, they announce who's moving on to phase 2. Phase 2 is always slightly less nerve racking, since you're more used to it, but it's still pretty bad. It's basically the same thing as before, but with all really good players.
I know the music. I mean, I'm not perfect at it or even comfortable with it by any means, but I can play it. However, I have horrible nerves when it comes to these things. I'm first chair, and I play all my solos with no nerves at all, even on stage. When I'm with a big group, it doesn't bother me one bit. But this is just me, all by myself, with three judges in front of me and thirty clarinet players behind me. It's tough!
So, does anyone have some tips at calming down my nerves? I have a shot of making the band, so long as my nerves don't screw me up.

Here to help.
About.... three?? weeks ago, I had a high school honor band try out... me being a lowly freshman was terrified. (I play the clarinet too whee )
I got there late, and didn't get a chance to warm up so I had to go right up.
Then I was told to go audition for the Jazz Band on Tenor Sax first since there were less people... by the timeI got to do my clarinet solo, my heart was racing and I didn't get a chance to re adjust to clarinet, so I relaxed my ombriture and played, concentrating mostly on my tone. Of course I screwed up a lot, squeaky, no attention to dynamics. (ended up getting in both bands, 5th chair for clarinet and the only one for tenor sax, and they let in the first 5 chairs for the orchestra.)
See? I played not like normal and I did very well.
If the do scales, which I think got me in, do well on those. Usually that's what gets you in.
But go in there and think: what will happen will happen. If I get in great, if I don't I tried. That keeps you much more relaxed. Just don't worry about mistakes, move on in the etude.

Relax. Eat a banana. Eat a doughnut. Bare in mind that people arn't there to see you screw up. They wanna see what YOU can do. By keeping that in mind. Be a snob and kick butt! =)

I'm a clarinetist 2!
Deep breathes can make you feal more nervous after so just stay positive and point out other people's mistakes in your mind. It's not nice but you'll feak better if you hear them and know that you can do better. I repeat it's not nice so tell ppl thats your plan for calming down

I have the same problem, as well, except my try outs are the 13th, not today. (This post probably won't matter if today is when you're trying out, but I just wanted to give my thoughts.) I'm a decently good french horn player, but I have awful nerves. But what helps me is to convince myself that I'm not nervous at all, and that I'm actually really excited for it. Instead of dreading messing up in front of the judges, I make myself believe that I am looking forward to showing them just how good I am. Even if you mess up, you can just think "Oh well, that doesn't matter, I can still kick some butt on the next scale," or something along those lines . . hehe . . that's what I do. Stay positive!
Good luck, too heart

Again, probably won't help you for this year, but next year and anybody else who still hasn't done All-Region, work on the etudes slowly, little by little until you get it all and then gradually build it up to tempo, and on the day of the audition, pretend you're just practicing, that'll take the pressure off, or you could make everyone else feel worse, or unsure of themselves by playing the etudes as fast as you can.

Woah, mine are on the 13th too. I'm going out for Region Band...

I play clarinet, too. Uh...this is the first year I'm auditioning, so I don't really know how to help. I'm assuming that if it's anything like chair tests, I'll get really nervous about it and then when I start I'll get a little less nervous, and it'll all be over really fast. Like ripping off a Band-Aid. :3 Okay, bad example.
=___= Uuugh. I just got really nervous.

This is not the same as an audition fer sure, but I had a band concert last night with a really loooong solo I had to play and I was trembling so much. You'll think about the audition too much and screw up [maybe] Just try not so hard to think about it. And if you do start thinking about it, just take a few deep breaths and you'll be fine. Really

before my honor band audition last week, i was flipping out i was about to cry and puke and explode all at once hahaha
the only thing i could think of to do was just go get my audition over with, so i did and it went well and i ended up getting first chair bass clarinet!
so, you pretty much just have to be able to accept that you may or may not do well, and ........do it
hahaha
