Humming softly to herself, Leru trotted along through the tall grass, eyes half-lidded and tail twitching back and forth behind her. It was lovely night out tonight... not too hot and not too cold, and with a nice breeze blowing across the savannah.

Very nearly perfect, in her opinion.

So she'd wandered off for a little while to enjoy it without the chatter of the rest of the group disturbing the quiet. Spotting a low tree up ahead, she tilted head and smiled... then bounded toward it, and up into the branches.

Once there, she draped herself over a nice wide branch and settled down to watch as other creatures scurried about below.

Lying up on a higher branch, contentedly digesting a generous helping of squirrel meat, Chache half-slept. There were no leopards in this territory that he could smell. Still, it paid to be cautious when traveling the long, flat grasslands of the rogue lands. This was lawless territory.

Floating half in dream, Chache’s ears ticked at the of sound claws scratching, bounding up the tree, and peeled open one verdant eye as the female walked into view on the branch below. He blinked open both eyes, stretched his long, agile body from the tip of his snout to the toes of his back paws and erect tail. Sitting on his haunches, Chache gazed down at the other serval. His large ears arched forward, curious and inviting conversation. When nothing was ventured he turned himself on the branch and leaned over the side, using his claws to keep himself from falling and wrapping his long, fluffy tail around it almost like a monkey. The scratching of his claws as they dug into the branch sounded like a clearing of the throat, an informal introduction.

Leru blinked slightly at the soft noise and twisted her head about to glance up - not having realized that this particular tree was occupied already. "Ah ... I'm sorry, is this your tree?" she asked, standing up in case the other wanted her to leave.

Chache chuckled. "As much as one can own a tree," he mused. "I don't mind company, especially the company of a beautiful lady like yourself.”

He trotted down the length of the branch, hopping off and landing gracefully on the lower branch where Leru stood. He did not swagger like a male looking for pleasure. He sauntered toward her casually, head tilted in a friendly, inquiring manner. “I am Chache.”

Leru smiled slightly at that, tail moving to curl about her feet and ears tilting toward the male. Well, well... a gentleman! "A pleasure to meet you, Chache," she replied with a little bob of her own head.

"I am Leru."

“The pleasure’s all mine,” Chache purred. He sat down by her hunches, hoping he didn’t make her feel crowded by sitting so close on such a small branch. At least it made conversation easier. “You remind me of someone. If I may, what brings you to this part of the rogue lands, Miss Leru?”

"Oh?" she asked, head tilting over to one side a little bit. She wondered who she reminded the male of, but didn't come out and obviously ask the question - just in case it wasn't something he wanted to talk about.

Instead, she smiled slightly and answered his question to her. "I'm traveling with a small group. We generally just wander wherever we like, and for the moment, our paws have brought us here."

Chache looked at Leru carefully, trying to figure it out. He shook his head with a smile. “Never mind. It’s silly. It must be nice to travel with a group of friends. I am a wanderer as well, but I keep more to myself.”

Leru smiled at that and laughed softly with a little nod. "The way things usually go ... you'll leave here and remember an hour later who it is I remind you of," she pointed out, tail twitching in amusement.

Then her ears perked a little toward him. "Are you lonely?"

Chache chuckled lightly to hide his discomfort. "Me? No. Of course, I try to make aquantances where ever I go. Never know when I might be back. My mother always told me I took after my father that way."

Truthfully, the brown patches of her coat reminded him a little of his mother. Penda's coat had been darker, too, but with plenty of grey by the time she reached old age. He felt too embaressed to mention it.

Leru smiled at that and nodded slightly. "Ah, I see..." she replied softly, watching the male with a bit of curiosity. He seemed to be thinking about something now - and she wondered what, though she was too polite to ask.

"That makes sense, though it is nice sometimes... to know that you have a place to come back to. Even if that 'place' consists of various individuals."

This was beginning to get uncomfortable. The female, Miss Leru, stirred up memories best left alone. After the death of his mother he felt as if a piece of him was missing. There were times he wished he had chosen a different path in life. He made a promise to himself that he would never settle down until he had done some real good for the world. Somehow, that thought now left him empty inside.

He could stay with her, just for the night. No. He shouldn’t harbor such careless thoughts. He wasn’t ready to start a family, even if her company would have helped his mood, and he would hate himself if he inadvertently left Leru in the same position as his mother.

He sighed, trying to smile. He would do better to take his leave now, before he did anything foolish. “Well, I best be on my way. I hope that our paths cross again.”

Leru blinked slightly at what seemed to be a sudden decision to part - but she would respect it, nodding a bit at the male.

"I wish you luck in your life, and love," she replied with a smile.

Then she turned to head back toward her own family.

Chache felt his fur prickle at that. He hopped down from the tree and disappeared into the grass without saying a word, too embarrassed to speak. In any case, what did he have left to say?

((End!))
