Answer me this:
Why does man love?
especially when that love can only last as long as both parties argee to let it?
If it is such a brittle, temporary state that we sacrifice all to be in, why do we do it?

Happiness. Motivation. Support. Devotion.

While love may sometimes suck, may hurt, may do the worst things to your psyche ever imagined... it also does the exact opposite. It can give you life meaning & purpose. Even if only temporarily. As we discussed in another thread... the only true constant in the universe is that everything is changing and will continue to change.

Loving often makes us feel better than receiving the love. It's the gift that keeps on giving. *awwww*

Thats perposterous! How could we do something so irrational and illogical? Is the entire planet made up of Sado Masochists? Are we that stupid that we wish to have our very soul sucked out of our heart just to have it thrashed by reality?

All that just for a few seconds of warmth? Why not just get a puppy!?

Meaning and purpose you say? Where my friend is the meaning behind illogical obsession? Where sir is the purpose behind unrequited, unabated love?

Happiness? Added up the average is zero percent.
Motivation? To what suicide?
Support? whose? See's Candy shop? and the local soap network?
Devotion!? devotion!? are you joking? What is the point of devotion if all your efforts are as useless as trying to woe a brick wall?

Devil advocatting or not, you're over reacting A LOT there, Socrates. By all you said it's like you're referring to loving someone and not being loved in return. But it IS pretty much irrational. Like most emotions.

Why do we love?

I cannot say. But if we wish to find the answer, perhaps we should look the other way first.

Why don't we?

Don't we?

Do you know of anyone who does not, in some form or other, love? Someone who does not have compassion for something/one, has a fondness for something/one, has appreciation for something/one?

*randomly felt like replying and might not be of any use! Yay*

That's just a dirty dirty lie. You can't control who you fall head over heals for. You can't stop an emotion (well you can, but that's another thread altogether). It just is, and you, more or less, can't do anything about it.

Socrates
How could we do something so irrational and illogical?

We are after all human.

Socrates
Is the entire planet made up of Sado Masochists?

Yes

Socrates
Why not just get a puppy!?

That too, young padawan, is love. Just not the human on human romantic love that we all assume is the only type of love.

Socrates
Where my friend is the meaning behind illogical obsession?

It's there, but you can't see it until it hits you in the face.

Ah. Love. One of the worlds leading killers in my glossy eyes. Though most of us fear falling in love, we can not but fall hard, deep. Why? Simply because it is human nature. Human emotion. If i had ever met someone who couldnt love, i would call him inhuman. Love hurts. Love kills. Love strengthens. Through the midst of the chaos and pain of love, its the addiction which drives people to come back to it. Its the feeling of being complete that brings you back to life after dying by the knife in hand of love. Why does man love? He does so because he was built to, designed to, weekend to. We cant avoid what we call emotions, they are apart of our life, apart of the way we think. Love just so happens to be one of those emotions.

I will tell you though. Being in love is worth all the fighting it took to get there. heart

To be honest, love is something that reminds us of what we have had, even when we don't have it.

I thought I'd forgotten how, after August...I haven't. And...yeah, life without love is depressing. But life with love is incredibles. And as far as I've seen, the good always outweighs the bad.

And what is it that we "have had"?

Love is one of those things that you can simulataneously never want to live without and want completely out of your life at the same time.

It is one of the most healing emotions out there, and also one of the most damaging.

Love is a double-edged sword. And, being human, we're always pushing to see how far we can go before we fall and don't get up again. It is only natural that we would find an emotion like love so addicting.

OK, love is an emotion caused by a chemical inbalance in the brain. Or so scientists proclaim. But it sound slike your just referring to love between two people rather than love in general.

Actually, love is very closely related to OCD ( Obsessive Complusive Disorder. ) And as for a person who has that condition, they seem to have it all the time. Don't be afraid to change. That is what love is. Love changes things, and change is life. Life is about changing. Kind of hard to determine whether or not you love, love, or it is just another scientifically proven diesease. Either way, do what you can, with what you have.

It doesn't help all the time though.
And I can emphasize with you in only the minutest sense of the word. Which is love. heart

We are talking abour romantic love, right?

Scientific Answer:

We love because, by evolutionary processes, a chemical reaction has been made possible to exist that causes us to need to reproduce madly. This state may not last long, but it almost guaruntees that young will be produced, which is the only way for a society/race/species/family to flourish.

Also, if there was no insentive to make love, we wouldn't do it. Sex cxan be painful and childbirth obviously so. Why do it! It turns out to be very pleasant to the lovers.

Philosophical Answer:

Love is essentially what everything else is about. Any human action can be traced back to love, and, more specifically, sex. It's a basic fact of human existence. People know it subconsciously: being in love is THE key experience percieved to be neccessary by the brain. Therefore, we love to justify everything else we do: what would life be if all was for ourselves and no other?

Furthermore, love is a huge social booster. It's something to talk about and a vital experience in the 'street smarts' category. Ever wondered why children are considered selfish and ignorant?
