So my husband has been watching Avatar with me towards the end but he still hasn't seen all of the series and we've been watching old episodes together on Nick. While watching the opening we were making comments on the four benders that mark the four nations. Paku for Water, possibly the Boulder for Earth, I think Azula for Fire, and of course Aang for Air. And the convo went something like this "Before the creators came up with Toph the guy who represents Earth was going to fill the role of Aang's Earthbending teacher." So my hubby notes that the one representing Water also ended up being Aang's Waterbending teacher. So if everyone but Aang is supposed to be one of Aang's teachers, does that mean originally Azula was supposed to be the one to switch sides?
I don't know what WoG is on so I might be missinformed but do you guyhs think that's possible? What would the show have been like if it did happen. What could have l lead to Azula becoming Aang's Firebending teacher?

That would have been weird... But yeah, it makes sense.

I don't think so. I think the opening is more representative of the best benders of the nations, the Boulder thing is plausible, though.

no way... it showed her in the first season, when iroh explained how zuko got his scar. she was SMILING as ozai burned zuko. it showed just how dark and evil she is very early on.
perhaps the people on the intro are just like the prodogies from each nation. paku has been a master water bending teacher for years, the boulder was extreemely popular and azula was a child prodigy who mastered lightning before reaching adulthood, not an easy thing to do.

Okay, so it was just the best from each nation, that makes sense with Aang for Air instead of showing his teacher (Monk Gyatso).
But let's step out of canon for a moment and consider what the show would have been like if Azula did switch sides. I just can't help but wonder what it would have taken for her to turn like that.
The way I see it she wouldn't have really become "good" so much as she realized that the Fire Nation was not going to win the war and decided to join the "winning team."

Actually, I don't believe that it's the best of each nation. If it were why are they showing Azula and not Ozai?Or Zhao? And why the Boulder? I would think that if they're going to put someone in the opening based on how awesome they are and are representatives of each nation then it should be King Bumi for Earth. Instead they show who was supposed to be Aang's teacher. That's gotta mean something.

I mean, that's how it's done (to the best of my knowledge, at least), so I doubt they would make such a feeble mistake as that. Maybe we're simply putting too much into it. I mean the Boulder is a skilled Earthbender, not the best, but skilled nonetheless. As well Azula is a prodigy, the best regardless, save for Ozai and Iroh. Who knows.

I still think it means something. If it really was about who was the best representation of that nation it really should be Bumi in there, not the Boulder. And he was in the first season so you know they would have had him planned out. But if they can change Aang's teacher from being the Boulder to Toph then obviously plans can change as time goes on. Afterall, wasn't it WoG that told us that the Earthbender in the opening was going to be Aang's Earthbending teacher before the idea for Toph was put forward? That's proof enough that it's not set in stone. And since Aang getting an Firebending teacher was all the way until the third season and they switched up his Earthbending teachers within just two seasons then they could very well do it again within three.
I'm not saying that's what did happen, I'm just saing it's a possibility and want to have a friendly "what if" discussion about what the show could have been like if it were Azula who switched sides instead of Zuko.

I'm not trying to put you off, I really am not. I'm just trying to be part of the conversation.
What if Azula was his teacher? Corporal punishment abounds.

I think you guys are hitting on something, but I always thought it was a case of example. Paku was a very skilled master and from the show, it was implied he was the master to go to for the Northern Water tribe. The Boulder was a showmen who had a fan following and I'm certain he'd put on displays of his skills for fans. Azula was a bloody show off. She was constantly looking for chances to show off and make a big display of what she could do. And Aang is the star of the show, the last airbender, AND a show of...as he clearly displayed in the episode where he had fangirls that followed him around.
I felt that they were giving you displays of the power as though some guy went to each country and asked for exampled to put in a documentary.

On the one hand, it would be ******** awesome to have Azula join the dream team, but it just wouldn't be the same without her as the sadistic, evil b***h she is throughout the entire show. That's why she's such an awesome character.
Unless maybe she joined the Gaang as a double agent or something, I really don't see how that could work.

Of Ninjas and Pirates Unless maybe she joined the Gaang as a double agent or something, I really don't see how that could work. I could see that working. She could totally learn all their plans while teaching Aang and then turn on them in the finale.
