Each genre has a specific style of vocals, and Why don't we discuss what we like about each genre or what we don't like. Okay these are generalizations and this is not meant to cover every band ever formed. Take this for what it is, and try not be a snob about it.
We will start with Goth: Bascially it has two styles, deeper male vocals and then there's the psudeo-operatic style. What do we think of this?
I personally loathe with all my heart and soul- the psudeo operatic vocals. Most of the time the girls can't hit the right notes and they come off as tone deaf and whiny.
As far as The male vocals-non harsh- goes, I usually adore this. Posionblack, Rainshadow, and For My pain are excellent example of this.

Gravechylde I agree with what you said. Because we rock like that of course. When it comes to goth, you and I are dead on.

What I prefer:
Gothic: Harsh male vocals. Death: Harsh brutal male growls. Black: doesn't really matter. Doom: Harsh male Vocals. Folk and Viking: Harsh higher pitched Vocals. Heavy: Clean male vocals...actually I have yet to hear harsh vocals in a Heavy Metal band. Power: Harsh male vocals, or very good clean vocals, male. Progressive: None, I like instrumental progressive. Speed: Not to sure. Thrash: the traditional style of thrash vocals.

Well I still have a lot more to say then those few sentences.
For instance: I also enjoy the deep clean male vocals of gothic metal, the females all sound the same after awhile, its like they all copy one anothers vocals styles.

I enjoy both styles. Sadly some bands seem to copy other band's vocal style, but they are very good at singing separatedly.
IMO a balance between both styles is the best, like Therion (yes, therion falls under gothic metal like it or not). Their song 'Lemuria' conines both vocals very well. Also Sirenia in 'My Mind's Eye'.
Good thread!! Have fun!

For me I enjoy the Psuedo-Opera vocals as well as the symphonic sounds when listening to goth metal.

I don't have to deal with it because they aren't gothic.
Their early material was death, and then they moved onto Symph. Which is why their thread is located in Other Metal Genres, and not in Goth.
Whether or not you agree Symph is a sub genre or style, Digital, the fact remains as this: Therion is NOT gothic metal.

Just listened to the stuff on the myspace, and if I had to put it in a genre, I'd say Heavy/Power, not Gothic.

I am not going to discuss this with someone who apparently doesn't know a thing about classification.
Now, what you, Grave, are saying makes more sense, since Heavy/power are real sub-genres.
However, Therion is gothic metal, not pure, of course, but its all gothic based. Said by themselves when they came to Chihuahua, and said by many different metal magazines I've bought.[/lastpostaboutit]
