I did this as part of my weekly homework in an art class when I was taking college classes up in Northern Az. There were a lot of forest fires between Flagstaff and Williams at the time, and there just so happened to be small controlled burn near campus. So using compressed charcoal I came up with this little sketch.

I'm kinda obsessed with trees. Dunno why.

I know your intent was a bit more sombre, but they make me think they're dancing. I like it. smile A lot.

They could be dancing.. I'd be doing some sort of dance if I were on fire I'm sure..

You know...? I've actually had someone ask me if they could set me on fire. Not kidding.

I like them, I want to dance with them to Bohemian Grove or Atomic Superstar by Dr. Steel. But then we all know I'm fairly nuts.

Wow, these trees really seem to come alive... you did a great job at capturing movement within them! I'm kind of curious what it would look like with color... Because I think you could do something really cool with the inspiration of a forest fire, as you said.

color would be interesting.. I may run it thru photoshop sometime and see what happens. I'm a big fan of the black and white tho.. I love charcoal.

once again very nice... what kind of paper are you using the stokes like like the paper is a tougher kind of material for shading

Hmm.. I can't remember the grit of the paper.. it was some pretty good drawing paper though. I was using Compressed charcoal as well, and that was the result of basicly just using the different edges of the coal and doing various swipes up and down and twisting it a little. Weird how it comes out huh?

I was taught to shade in the most tedious way possible... everything you want to shade, shade over very lightly.. then go back over it, leaving certain parts untouched, and repeat that over and over...

It works really well, and with those specific coals, it's very easy to do because it leaves a lot of the white on the paper beneath it.

(we basically spent several hours with a rectangle on a paper that was sectioned off.. we shaded the entire then lightly, then over again, and over again and over again, so you had a gradient when you were done.. that was practice...)
