The newspaper was clasped tightly in Araran's hand, the brownish paper crumpled under his tight grip. Rioge was holding onto his top, he had invested in some mortal clothes to reduce the amount of glamour used on his now rather frequent outings to mortal establishments with Rioge. The advertisement section was thumbed down, the corner turned in to mark the page so the fae could find it easily - should the newspaper have been one of the ancient tomes from the library the librarian fae would never have done such a thing but the mortals newspapers seemed to be abundant and so he had no qualms about defacing this copy...
The advert that he was interested in was for a bakery class. It read;
"Berty's Bakery!!! Special class for those interested in the art of baking!! For ages 6+ All degrees of skill welcome! Learn to bake with the world famous baker; Berty Bradwell - founder of the Berty Baker company!"
He had thought it was a good idea that Rioge begun learning more life skills; he had begun to master glamour, even now his hair was glamoured to look a mortal shade of brown, but other skills like cooking, cleaning, and other mundane but much needed skills required learning too.. And Araran would love someone with more culinary skill than a teaspoon in the house... There was only so much soup that one could handle..
They stopped outside the bakery of the town that the class would be held in. Smiling warmly at the nervous child he entered, making the bell on the door tingle in welcome.
A man in a tall chef's hat baring a large fluffy mustache looked up from behind the counter covered in delicious cakes. His grey eyes widened and a grin spread underneath his mustache. "Ah! You must be here for the class! You are the first, come in, come in." He said, urging them to come towards the counter. Obligingly they did so, wondering if they would be the only ones doing the class..

As they wondered, a young man stepped in, grinning at the woman who accompanied him. She hesitated at the door, and Julien just smiled, waving once more in a clear acceptance of the idea that she might not stay before turning to the class and teacher. "Hello," he offered, moving forward and favoring Rioge with a cheerful smile. "I'm Julien. I'm here to take the class."

Another person entered the shop, making the bell tinkle again with a friendly welcome. "Hello. I'm Julien, here to take the class." He introduced himself, smiling warmly at Rioge. Giggling slightly at the teenager's friendly smile Rioge grinned back - giving the older boy a small wave. Araran on the other hand was acting quite oddly towards the boy, peering intently at his pale blue hair. It was true that many mortal youths enjoyed dying their hair unnatural colours, but the pointed ears could not be excused and Araran was guessing that the teenager in front of him was no ordinary mortal - but perhaps a fae, or even another Ashe.
He held his tongue though, the man in the chef's hat was obviously a mortal and confronting the teenager about his race could prove quite troublesome, should unwanted ears overhear... Instead he returned the boy's smile and moved closer to the counter - listening intently for the chef's instructions.
"Hello! Hello! Shall we begin? Any late comers can join in as they arrive." Exclaimed the chef, opening a gate in the counter - allowing them to pass through. "Come through my friends, wash your hands! Cleanliness is important!" He motioned towards a hand basin behind him and begun bustling about, collecting different bits of equipment; rolling pins, forks, ect.
"Go on then, wash your hands. I don't think I'll take part, I'd rather watch." Araran said, patting Rioge on the head and shunting him in the right direction. Rioge nodded eagerly and rushed off - happy to get started, not noticing the odd looks his adopted-father was giving the boy called Julien.

Julien didn't seem to notice the odd looks he was recieving... or perhaps it was simply that they didn't bother him. He moved to wash his hands along with Rioge, taking a few moments to discard his indigo sweater on the back of a chair and roll up the sleeves of the paler shirt beneath. As he stepped up beside Rioge, he looked down at the boy with a grin. "It's good to see someone else in the class, too," he noted, scrubbing his hands carefully before shaking the excess water off of them and reaching for some paper towels to dry them.

The blue hair boy reached up to the sink and held his small hands under the water, rubbing them together before adding a squirt of the liquid soap and lathering up his hands. When they were sufficiently clean he too took a paper towel and dried himself off. "Yeah, I'm looking forward to it!" He replied politely, moving over to the table where the chef was setting out the equiptment.
"Ok students! Are you both clean?" Inquired the teacher, looking at Rioge and the teen. Rioge nodded and held his hands out for inspection. The chef nodded curtly and stood up tall, as if about to make a grand speech but instead introduced himself; "I am, the one, the only - Berty Bradwell! Nice to meet you. I will be taking your lesson today and we will be starting with something quite simple!" He coughed and smiled smugly holding a cookie cutter in his hand and showing it to them.
"We will be making... Cookies! Not just any cookies! But white chocolate chip cookies!"

Julien grinned, leaning against the counter near Rioge as he watched the teacher intently. He made no real effort to hide his ears, far more interested in learning the recipe of the day, but occasionally, his eyes would flit over to Rioge thoughtfully.

As the man explained what they had to do, Rioge listened intently. The recipie was qite simple, but the pmpus man made it sound grand and dramatic by waffling on about just the right temperature to make the chocolate chips gooey and make the cooke crumple perfectly. It was almost a relief when he stopped explaining and they were allowed to start making.
"I need... 1/2 c. butter, 1/2 c. sugar, 1/4 c. light brown sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 egg, 1 c. all-purpose flour, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp, baking soda, 1 c. white chocolate chips." Rioge mumbled, repeating what the chef had said as he collected the correct igredients. When he had them all he set them out infront of them - ready to to be used.
He glanced at Julien and gave him a smile, "Got everything?"

Julien nodded, smiling back at Rioge as he carefully arranged each ingredient in front of his own place. He liked the smile the boy had offered. "I think I even translated which temperature we're supposed to use for the chocolate," he said quietly, the words accompanied by a friendly laugh. "How about you? Ready to bake?" If anything, Julien seemed excited about the prospect, taking careful notes of the recipe on a notebook he'd brought with him.

Rioge nodded in response to the boy's question, yes he was ready. And eager to start too! He could impress Araran with his obvious natural skills at baking. He grinned, imagining the big sweet melt-in-the-mouth cookies he was going to create. With the help of the teacher of course...
"My name is Rioge, by the way." He said, taking the butter - as instructed by Berty - and beating it to make it soft. He found it was difficult as the butter was quite hard, coming fresh out of the fridge, but once he got the hang of it and was into a rhythm the butter soon softened up.
He glanced at his companion's bowl.
"How well are you doing?" He asked, smiling warmly.

Julien had started the butter process by taking a fork to the chunks of butter, mashing them down with the tines carefully. Working the butter that way would make the actual beating of it far easier, in the end, Julien knew, though he by far preferred to let the butter soften before beating it.
"I like baking," Julien offered, eyes warm, "so I find this fun. How about you? Enjoying the idea of making something for others to enjoy?"

The other boy seemed nice enough and was acting pleasantly towards him, so Rioge was all smiles as they moved onto the next step in the recipe - adding the sugar and beating in the eggs and vanilla. He stopped beating the butter and grabbed the right amount of sugar. In reply to Julien's question he said; "Yes, I want to give the cookies to Araran." He motioned towards his adoptive father who was still sitting staring oddly at Julien, watching his every move.
He began tipping in the sugar, awkwardly stirring it at the same time so that it was mixed in evenly. But his small arms and hands found it hard to do and he ended up banging the mixing fork on the side of the bowl with a disgruntled sigh. Could you help me? I'm finding it a bit hard." He asked Julien... He desperately wanted his cookies to turn out well so Araran could be extra proud of him.

Julien nodded cheerfully to Araran when he was pointed out, ignoring the way the man was staring at him. Instead, he turned back to his own bowl, working at it for several moments until Rioge's request. Blinking, he set his bowl aside and grinned, nodding. "Would you like to stir or add?" he asked, ready to do either to help out the smaller boy.

Rioge considered the choice... His arms were quite tired so he took the easier option - adding. Although, it was still an important task... He had to add at the right pace or there would be one bit of extra sugary mixture and one bit without. "You can stir... And I can add." he instructed, passing Julien the mixing fork and taking the sugar for himself, ready to tip it in bit by bit.
He felt that he should make conversation with his helper - he was doing it out of kindness and it was polite to engage in conversation to get to know the other better. "So who're you going to give your cookies to?" He looked at the woman who he had come in with. "Is she your mother?" he asked. He was actually fairly curious to know what is was like to have a mother. He had no females around the house - just him and Araran - and so his interaction with the opposite sex was rather low and like most young boys he seemed to think of them as almost another species entirely.

"Kind of," Julien said, starting to whisk the fork through the mixture at a steady pace, the bowl gripped in his other arm to steady it. He'd hunkered down onto his heels for this, to give the shorter boy an easier time of adding. "She's adopted me, at any rate. I thought I'd learn the recipe, make some more at home, and split them between her, Toulouse, Aesop, and Kashya," he added cheerfully. "They're friends of mine. We're all a little different from others, so I like to make them smile when I can."

Smiling cheerily as he tipped the last of the sugar in Rioge dusted off his hands over the bowl and waited for the chef to give the next instruction.. He grimaced as he learned that they would have to beat in the eggs and vanillia, but his arms were rested thanks to Julien's noble help and he could probably do the next stage himself - if Julien did ALL the hard work then theey wouldn't really be his own creations... and it wouldn't feel as good giving them as a present to Araran.
"Thanks, I'll try and do this now." He took the fork off Julien and proceeded to beat in the eggs and liquid vanillia. It smelt really good and he put much more effort into it than before, eager to get onto the next stages and then eventually bake them! The end result would be soooo good! In the meantime though he could make conversation with Julien who seemed to be very friendly.
"I'm different too." He replied, glancing quickly at his dad who was staring out the window, a frown upon his face. Rioge bit his lip, wondering if it would hurt to tell the other boy that he was a faerie. Araran had always stressed that it was important to keep it a secret but Rioge liked Julien a lot and he was ever so friendly. "I can do magic." He grinned, this way he hadn't totally broken Araran's trust.. He hadn't directly admitted to being an Ashe. So it was OK!
