"Times will darken
The sky will turn black
Evil will abound
Good will fight
and somebody will die-"

"What?" Jonathan interrupted, hands on his hips. "You lost me at darken. Can you repeat that in terms understandable by the average hero-to-be? I've gotta remember this for future generations."

"Yeah!" The door busted open- Jonathan jumped, spun around, and pulled out his sword, waving it threateningly. In the doorway was his biggest enemy, Lord Vermayshimianencala, Lord V for short. "I need to understand too! After all, it's my son who'll have to battle the hero of the story!"

"...I can't argue with that. Come inside and maybe we can figure this out together. So, mister self-proclaimed prophet, what does it mean?"

The prophet frowned, and glared at Jonathan. "I can't explain it. If you don't understand, that's too bad."

Jonathan looked at Lord V; Lord V looked at Jonathan. "Fetch the five-year-old!" Lord V declared, and soon a five-year-old was in the room. "Child, we want you to translate something for us. Okay?"

"Okay." The child chirped, eyes bright. She sat down on the floor and stared curiously at the prophet.

The prophet glared, but started over. "Times will darken, the sky will turn black, evil will abound, good will fight and somebody will die. Good may or may not triumph over evil, but if evil does something stupid, like marry an evil empress who will order the evil lord to be killed, then good will probably win."

The child contemplated the words for a moment, then she opened her mouth. "He means that the candy-man will make the world give out free candy unless the ice cream man does it first, until he lets his ice cream melt."

Lord V and Jonathan stared at each other. "Erm..." Jonathan said; he blinked, bewildered. "How about we write our own prophecy and submit it to the gods for review?"

"Sounds good to me. Come on, child, I'll make you my heir and turn you into an evil lordess who will inevitably fall in love with Jonathan's hero and make the story end well."

"Okay." The little girl took Lord V's hand and followed him out of the room.

"But- but- what about me?" The prophet declared, horrified. "I need to be paid!"

"Sorry, no can do." Jonathan shrugged and followed Lord V out.

I'm not even sure what the prophecy itself means, so I was just giving the obligatory screwball answer.

I bet you can probably tell I got bored with being cryptic at the end...
