Ok, I've just got back from the cinema after watching Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and my first impression is.....dissappointing. I didn't expect great things from it, giving my dubiousness of George Lucas when he makes add ons to movie trilogies..but I did expect it to be better than it was. The action was fine...pretty good even...it was just the story...it was just...silly. All the way through the film I felt I was thinking "ok I'll go along with this.." and then it just tipped over the edge and they took it too far.
For those of you who haven't yet seen the film, then don't read any more because it contains spoilers!! For those of you who want to read on, just highlight the white text below.
They say that the ending of a film sways your opinion of it because it's the last thing you remember, which is probably why I have pretty bad opinions of this movie. I was expecting a good action packed finally, but there wasn't really much action in the finale. And bascially, aliens just don't do it for me. I'm not a big sci-fi fan, and I think sci-fi belongs in Star Wars and not Indiana Jones. I think it should stay seperate. Indiana Jones has been about history and religion...not futuristic aliens. I didn't mind the mystery and suggestion of alien beings creating the skull...but to actually literally show the aliens which created it was just taking it too far in my opinion. And to have a UFO for goodness sake..that just spoilt it.
I liked the action in the film..it was good. I just did not like the story. I went with it for 3/4 of the film, and then it just lost it for me...I just could not find myself believing it in the same way I could believe the other 3 movies. It just felt silly...really silly. I also didn't like the way George Lucas did his typical thing of making it cheesy, which is exactly what he did with the second Star Wars trilogy. I was happy with Mutt being Marian's son...but being Indy's? I don't like the idea, Plus, the wedding?? There was no need for it. Ok make him fall in love with Marian again, but to get married?? I thought it was cheesy rubbish to be honest.
The acting was decent, and Harrison did a great job as usual. However, I thought some of the characters could have been filled out more than they were. For instance, Marian hardly did anything...she was such a strong, fiesty character in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and none of that was shown in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Ray Winston was also brilliant. his relationship with Indy could have been explored much more, rather than feeling like it was just a minor sub-plot. I felt like the characters were just running around following Indy, rather than adding anything substantial to the movie. The villainess was good, however the bad guys didn't really seem that bad...they didn't seem really truly evil..and there was a definate lack of great bad guy music, like in Last Crusade.
Even though the action was good, I didn't pick up a sense of danger or peril..I never once believed Indy was going to die...there was nothing keeping me on the edge of my seat or my heart thumping, like there was in the other 3 movies. There was no peril, even in the tomb scene here they tried to add suspense...there were no traps in the tomb, which I was expecting. It was just Indy and Mutt crawling down dusty passages. To me, the film just fell flat...there was no excitement, and the story was just too silly.
Overall, the movie wasn't too bad, but it was nowhere near as good as the other movies. It felt very different, very much seperate and appart from the others, as if it doesn't fit with them. It was enjoyable to a degree but nothing compared to the originals.
This is just my opinion though and I would love to know what everyone else thinks!!

I agree with you to a point. Marion really did nothing and the action wasn't perilous, but I LOVED the movie! lol. Harrison was just great and Shia really plesantly suprised me. The comedy in the movie was just so great! I enjoyed the movie so much, in fact, I'm going to see it AGAIN Sunday. XD. My favorite line, "Do you have any last words Dr. Jones." "Yeah, I like Ike." SO great! The whole thing with Indy and Shia didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. They were a good father son team.

I can understand why people love it but for me, I'd rather pretend it doesn't exist. Indiana Jones will always be a trilogy for me. Lucas is talking about making another one, but I really hope he doesn't. I really hope they don't decide to make the son of Indy films..that would really make me hate him. But, like you said, it was the lack of peril that made me feel kinda bored...it just felt...flat.

We discussed about that after the movie. I really hope there won't be any more sequels. At least not those Son of Indiana Jones movies. That'd be just ridiculous. But hey, it's all about making money. gonk

But hey, it's all about making money. gonk Lucas wants to go into a Son of Indy trilogy, cause I know his mind by now. The man loves trilogys, but I don't think HF and Speilburg wanna go there. Speilburg wants to do more films, as does HF, but Speilburg wants to do more Harrison/Shia together films. Not just Shia alone. As far as he and HF are concerned Indiana Jones is one man and one man only. They won't let George ******** it up, but at the same time it's hard for me to get angry with Lucus. You have a great idea like that and you just wanna keep it going as long as you can. The man has so many stories for Indy he didn't get to explore and you can't blame a man for wanting to try and do so. He's got the money and the position. Half the time a movie is made to please the people who made it rather then the general public... actually that's most of the time. He and HF and Speilburg thought they made a good movie and they said, "Here it is, take it or leave it. We made it cause me can and we wanted to." I have the same problem with my books. I have so many story lines running through my head and I just keep going. It gets manotonus for people reading, but it gets it out of my head. We'll have to wait and see. No matter what if it has Indiana Jones on the title and Harrison's name attatched I'm in that theater seat with an IJ shirt on!

I really hope he doesn't decide to make them..I really do. There is a point where you need to stop because it gets too out of hand. Most film makers go over that point in eagerness to make more money and make the films have more shock appeal and more action etc. It happened with The Mummy, it happened with Pirates of the Caribbean. Film makers get carried away by thinking "we'll bombard the audience with everything we've got in a 'bigger and better' attempt"...but it doesn't work, because by doing that you lose important things about the first movie..to make a brilliant movie you need to keep it contained. This is what I think happened with Indiana Jones 4. I'm glad that the cast and creators of the Indy movies made them for fun regardless of what the critics or public think, because they've got the money to do it. It dosn't matter if it's not a success. you can make films purely for fun...like Shoot Em Up..that's just pure fun..but if you want to do that, you should do it with different characters and a different story. If you use old characters, you threaten to ruin what you once had with a serious film. You wouldn't need to live up to the reputation..you could get away with your film being pure fun but no amazing film. I think Lucas needs to rein himself in before he takes it too far...because if you do that, you lose the brilliance that you created in the first place.
I don't think Harrison will want to do anymore films. I think he wanted to make another for the thrill of doing it, to enjoy it, but I don't think he wants to keep doing it. Shia would happily do it I'm sure. But one thing about not making son of Indy films, is to leave it to the fans. Fans love being able to create their own stories about characters from movies.

He said, "I don't know, but if George and Steven come to me with a good script it's very possible." We'll wait and see. If they do I'll be there watching it.

I'd be pleased that he said "if they come to me with a good script"..but I didn't think Crystal Skull was a good script so I'm not filled with confidence. There's a rumour that Shia has signed a contract for 3 more movies...cause Lucas wants to make son of Indy movies...*sigh*

If he does I won't be going to see them. Not even sure if I'd go to see another Indy movie. I don't really want to see "my hero" degraded any more sweatdrop My imagination is better than the reality of the movies whee
If I was Lucas I'd be very tempted to do it, just for the sheer fun, so I can understand it. But if he does make some, he needs to rein himself in more and contain the story and action..rather than just thinking "oh that looks like fun, lets do that."...

I agree with that. If he's going to make more I want him to get more action and a little darker story line in there. I LOVE the comedy, but if he's going into the Son of Indy films and that he's gotta be sure he does it in the same way Indy was done originally. I wanna think Shia's going to die about 5 times a film lol.

EXACTLY! 3nodding There was too much comedy in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull..while it's a good thing to have ..there needs to be strong action to back it up. It reminded me more of Temple of Doom more than the other 2..but even the action in that was exciting and perilous. It needed more peril. We need to believe the heroes will dye.

Ironiclly enough Temple of Doom is my favorite movie over all BECAUSE of all the comedy so it's no wonder I love this 4th one too, but the peril just wasn't there.

In my own humble opinion, I rather enjoyed the movie. Yahoo! had rated the movie -by its users and by its critics- at a B and B-, I would rate it at an A. I suppose that part of my rating so highly would be that it did bring in a few more members, members that we so desperately need if we are to stay afloat, but mostly because Harrison Ford is among the best actors of all time, and to see him back in action was just another sign that even as time goes on, great things do happen. Did that make any sense?
Part of why I was so thrilled with the movie also dealt with the graphics. I was glad that they did not overwhelm the audience -as the newest Star Wars movies did. . .-, Harrison Ford was still Indiana Jones, he finally tied the knot with Marion -Been waiting for that for about 15 years-, and the acting was very good. There could have been a light shone upon the CCCP that was more detrimental to their being however, the showing of the intelligence of the higher-ups was effective. I have forgotten already, did the Soviet woman have CCCP written on the back of her shirt -near the collar-, or was it USSR?
As more things come to me, I will post them however, this is about it for now.

He's never ruined a movie for me ever! Lord I love that man! *drools over him* lol I love him and now I see why! He's just so talanted! Over all I love it and I believe it was USSR.
