Sunlight slanted down through the lingering chill of New Leaf, brushing its glare across a brown-pelted form curled up against the winds, and large green eyes that opened muzzily and took a heartbeat to focus on their surroundings.
What in StarClan’s name was she doing? It was already well past sunrise!
Instantly the she-cat was bolt upright with eyes wide open. She’d barely slept more than a few heartbeats for the excitement, or so it felt like, and had kept half her new den mates up too with all the tossing and turning and kicking up of moss. But the shot of adrenaline that ran through Burrpaw at the realization that today was the first day of her apprenticeship, and her mentor Violetstar – Violetstar herself! – had promised they would start her training, was enough to banish all reluctant remnants of sleep from her mind.
Burrpaw bounded out of the apprentices’ den so fast her claws left gouges in the side of the nest, barely pausing to shake the dried moss from her fur. The other clans might scoff that WindClan was so quick because they always ran away – which they had certainly seemed to prove with their wild goose chase, but that didn’t matter – but Burrpaw was going to be the strongest and fiercest warrior any of the clans had ever seen! And with Violetstar having chosen herself to be the new apprentice’s mentor, surely that meant she was destined for great things? Barely managing to avoid several collisions in her pell-mell run, the cat left many an amused or sympathetic glance in her wake.

Violetstar was already at the clan entrance and she smiled as soon as she saw burrpaw running her way. It hadn't been long since the apprenticeship and Violetstar already felt attached to the young apprentice. It also wasn't long since she and her den mates had been busted for leaving the camp. This apprentice would prove to be a big trouble if she was trained wrong.
As the apprentice came up to her Violetstar heard the complaining cats and almost giggled at the destruction Burrpaw had made getting here. "Next watch where you're going." Violetstar mewed sternly but with a lot of humor in her voice.

"Violetstar!" Burrpaw swerved to intercept her at the entrance, skidding to a stop just short of crashing into her mentor. As she had feared, she must have been late. She looked around in confusion at Violetstar's unexpected words, then ducked her head in momentary abashment as she noticed all the cats staring at them. Staring at her. Oops. This was not the way she had dreamed of starting off her apprenticeship at all.
"Sorry, Violetstar" she mewed, one paw scuffing at the earth. But the apprentice's ebullience couldn't be contained for long, and she lifted her head to look at the other cat hopefully. "Um... will we be going hunting today?"

Violetstar smiled at the apprentice's enthusiasum. And flicked her tail for her to follow. Padding slowly she replied. "First we need to have a tour of our territory and after that depending on the time left we may go hunting for awhile."

"All right!" she mewed eagerly, embarrassment long forgotten as she bounded after Violetstar. Aside from the Clan's journey back home and her little escapade with the others as a kit, Burrpaw had seen little of the WindClan lands. And who knew, maybe they would come across some danger that she'd have to protect her leader from! The very thought made her puff up in pride and determination, but she forced herself to the shaky semblance of a sedate pace. Kit fantasies aside, this was serious business.
Or so she tried to remind herself.

Violetstar smiled and led them out of camp. There wasn't much to show her considering there land was basically just the moar. Atleast she could show the apprentice their clan boundries. Padding over to the RiverClan border she mewed. "That's the RiverClan border. You can always rememer this by the steep gorge."

Burrpaw's eyes were wide and her ears were pricked, obviously trying to drink in the smallest of details about their environment with every sense. At the same time she was trying her best to move noiselessly and gracefully after Violetstar - after all, a true WindClan cat should be as silent as starlight and quick as the wind over the moors. But in her concentration, she sometimes forgot where to pay attention to her paws around the frequent stone outcroppings that dotted their territory, and had stumbled more than once.
"Whoa!" When they arrived at the gorge, the apprentice was unable to resist padding up to the very edge to look over at the crashing water. The noise and the water's scent confused her senses, but if she strained... "I can smell RiverClan!" she announced proudly without thinking.

Violetstar smiled at her apprentice's concentration. "Yes, that is the RiverClan border. You can never be too careful around this gorge. Many have lost their lives to it before." Her eyes clouded with the memory of the lost clanmates. "Well, we're done here. Now to the ShadowClan border." She announced cheerfully although inside she wasn't feeling too happy about going near that border at a time like this.
It took them not long before Violetstar could smell the wretched odor of ShadowClan. "You'll always recognize this border for it's awful smell." She mewed almost having to hold her breath.

The young apprentice wrinkled up her nose. Almost overpowering the smell of the marshes was a rank and sour scent that made the fur on her back rise. All the whispered rumors she had heard about ShadowClan ambition came back to her in a flash. They were always at the root of trouble in the forest, some of the elders said.
But still, they were warrior cats the same as Burrpaw was. They had their own leaders, deputies, apprentices, warriors, medicine cats, and queens. They followed the code, and they came to Fourtrees and the Moonstone, same as WindClan. They couldn't be that bad.
Could they?
Her claws slid out and back in unconsciously, and she opened her jaws to draw the pungent scent in more clearly despite its unpleasantness. For once, Burrpaw was entirely serious in her determination to protect her Clan from all who might threaten it.
