This is one of many nests in the Minder’s enclave. This one is walled in by thick trees on three sides, and the young ones taking shelter here should be safe, warm and hopefully not too terrified by the roaring storm. The surrounding trees are creaking ominously in the wind, but they won’t fall, right?

Fiachra flapped his wings in the corner of the nest, turning in bored circles, eyeing the contours of the walls. Talons sinking into the pebbles and twigs in the bottom of the small hollow, he reached down with his beak and began sorting the rocks by their texture and color, fancying he'd build himself a small castle.

Outside, the rain fell hard and intemperate against the trunks of the trees, the creaking sounds sending shivers up his body.

Ever since he was little he was taught by his Minder that trees were among the most solid, unbreakable objects there could possibly be, and now that they were on the verge of cracking he had no idea what to do. Shaking his head furiously, he flattened himself towards the back of the enclave, eyes out and gleaming, thoughts whirring into a million possibilities of what might happen.

The chaos outside caught at his heart, but he wasn't one for voicing opinions or fear, any kind of weakness.

His silence was almost enough to console him.

Mulberry wasn't really sleeping. She had only pretended to take a nap so that she would be left alone for a little while, since the sound of the creaking trees and the hiss-howl of the wind in the higher canopy made her feel rather uneasy. It wasn't that she was afraid, of course, but she worried a bit about her parents.

She could easily see them before her mind's eye, huddled up in a small shelter somewhere and worried sick about their little girl. She wished she could be there to cheer them up, and squeeze in between their two big, warm bodies... So that they wouldn't have to be afraid. Because she sure wasn't.

The little wildtype's eyes flew open and every feather on her enitre body sleeked down as the thunderbird seemed to beat his wings right above her head.

"Mama..." She squeaked quietly.

((I'll continue with you but we'll change the post order when the others come in ^_^))

Fiachra, flattened against the wall, stretched out his wings a little, peering at the fledgling that still seemed to be asleep. He shook his head incredulously. It was insane, being able to sleep in such a circumstance. Outside the Thunder Bird was wailing and howling and doing God-knows-what, and here this little cutesy-pie was just taking a nap as if all was right with the world.

She annoyed him a bit, the way she looked so safe and smug right there. She probably had a family and friends somewhere, people that she loved more than anything else in her life and he had no one, and yet she seemed so much more calm than he was, inside. Inside of him there was turmoil, his stomach twisting in horror.

At her small voice, he nearly jumped, eyes softening at that familiar word. Barely remembering he parents, he felt only warmth in that gentle expression.

So maybe she was scared, after all. He looked away.

Fig lay awake, unable to sleep because of the creaking trees. What if they gave way? What would happen to all the fledglings? Thought after thought ran through her head, none of them were pleasant. The young girl couldn't help but be fearful of the storm that boomed just beyong the trees. Never before had she experienced such a thing. Sure she had been in small rain storms before, but nothing like this. Pika, Fig's mus, was at her side but offered no help. It was obvious that Pika felt just as nervous as Fig did.

Usually, Fig's mouth would be running like crazy. She would spit out random thought after random thought. But now she was quiet. She was unable to stop thinking about what was happening just outside the enclave. What she would have given to huddle up with the other fledglings! But they seemed preoccupied with themselves. Plus, Fig didn't think she would be able to move from the spot she was sitting at for anything.

So she stayed put, fixated on the storm outside.

Despite the surrounding trees the nest was growing colder as a draft snaked in, and the scattered state of the fledglings did nothing to preserve the warmth. A flash of light made the nest eerily bright for a few moments and just as the darkness returned it was followed by a deafening crack of thunder.

Mulberry jumped up as night became blinding day in an instant, and hurried over to the other little female. Just as the air was rent in two by the horrible sound of the thunderbird, she plopped down next to her impromptu nestmate and pressed herself close to her.

When the noise finalle died down, Berry opened her eyes again and looked over at Fig with a stern expression that was only slightly belied by the shiver in her voice and body.

"We should stay together, so we don't get cold!" The little Wildtype demonstratively fluffed up and made herself comfortable, then gave the male fledgling the same no-nonsense glare. "You too, huddle up! Real close!"

She was fairly sure that that was what a Minder or a Teacher would have said, if they had been there. She hoped it would make the others think that she was being smart, and not get the silly impression that she was actually scared or anything.

Fig, who wasn't expecting a sudden burst of light, let of a peep of surprise. Something had moved right next to her. Looking over, Fig was surprised and glad to see another fledgling next to her. After the blinding light was over, it was followed by a bone-chilling wind. Fig let out a small shiver, scooped up Pika into her wings, and huddled closer to the other female. It was much warmer beside her and her presence was comforting. Fig figured that she would feel even better with the male fledgling by her too. So she followed the other female's led and called him, "Yeah! Come over here! It's freezin'!" If they all huddled together, they would be much warmer and feel much safer.

As light illuminated the room, Fiachra stood dead still, his eyes still adjusting to the darkness afterward. It was cold, though he didn't mind that as much, what he did mind was the feeling of loneliness that seemed to slip over his heart, the more he thought about it. That girl 'sleeping' on the floor probably had some pretty great parents out there, and the other, lying smack-dab in the middle of the room had a bright mus right beside her. Bet they had nothing to fear.

Boom.

The thunder seemed to rock the very base of the tree and shook the wall in sides of the hollow he was leaning on. Frowning, he watched as his rock piles crumbled, along with the base of his castle, the only things he could do to distract himself from the storm and the two ladies squeezing together, fussing over something or the other... goodness, he was shivering, too.

At their insistent voices he heard hints of fear, the urgency in their eyes beckoning him closer. Looking away, he ignored them, stretching out his wings a little more until the tip of his feathers brushed the sides of the hollow. He'd be just fine, he didn't owe anything to the two.

Mulberry's first reaction was surprise, then, as the male turned his back and nonchalantly streched out his wings, she got angry instead. Here she was making an effort to keep everyone safe, and... and... how DARED he act so uppity!

"Hey you!" she shouted. "I'm talking to you! Do you wanna freeze to death or something? You know what the Minders would say! We gotta huddle up!"

She glanced over at the other female as if to ask, Do you know this guy? or possibly, What's the matter with HIM?

((This is great, guys, but I think we should stick to a more set post order. Let's go me - Mamoru - Rai from now on, okay?))

There's a sudden loud THUMP from directly behind Mulberry and Fig, as something rather large strikes the tree they are huddled against. Then a long, drawn-out scraping noise, as of claws on wood.. then some sharp scrabbling and an eerie hiss as the noise climbs higher, higher, until it is almost drowned out by the driving rain.

The source of the noise is on the opposite side of the tree from the young females so they wouldn't be able to see what's making the terrifying noises without leaving the safety of the nest. However, if Fiachra were to investigate from his vantage point he'd see a large hulking form clinging to the tree, up near the canopy, slowly inching its way around the thick trunk.

( Okay :3 )

Fig couldn't believe that the male would rather stand by himself. The nest was getting colder by the minute and the storm showed no signs of letting up. She figured that the boy must either be really brave or too prideful. Why else would he risk freezing? She flashed the female next to her an equally confused glance and shrugged.

But before Fig could think about it any further, a loud noice was suddenly heard. Fig jumped slightly, realizing that it came from right behind her and the other female. "Something must be out there!" she gasped, scooting closer to the other fledgling. From the noise, Fig could only figure that whatever the creature was, it was big. The creature's various noises sent a chill down Fig's spine. As if the storm wasn't bad enough by itself. Now, some strange thing lay just beyond the trees that surrounded them. What could it be? Fig wasn't sure which was worse, not knowing what made the sound or imagining what horrible thing it could be. Now more than ever she wished they would all huddle together.

Fiachra laid blank eyes on the two fledglings, particularly the one that was getting infuriated over him. Looking away, he puffed out his chest feathers and proceeded to collect warmth, his own thoughts whirring much louder than any storm- let them be warm, they'd be warm together, he didn't need them and they didn't need him. Louder, at least, until it happened.

It was sudden and merciless and Fiachra felt the effects immediately. His heart was racing, everything about him was running in circles from that immense fear. Turning his back to the two females so they couldn't see his terrified eyes, he shuffled his position until he could see just what 'it' was.

His eyes grew wide. It was a large shape, circling around the trunk methodically, getting closer-

"We have to get out of here or get safe right now, there's something big out there." he noted quietly, his voice emotionless. But when he turned, his face was riddled with bits of chaos- fear, pride, the eyes of the small fledgling he was, someone that had no grown up with any support. He wasn't going to ask for help, because he knew he was strong.

But he was also very, very, very scared.

Mulberry jumped right along with the other girl at the sudden noise just behind her back, but if she thought that she had known what fear was at that moment, she soon learned better. She didn't need to hear the strange boy's words to know - If it had only been a thump, she could have written it off as heavy, flying debris or something, but what really sent icy lances of horror down her downy little form was those unmistakeable sounds of something climbing, long claws scrabbling against the bark...

Her deep golden eyes met those of the male hatchling in the universal understanding between small creatures that are forced to realise their own vulnerability. We're gonna die, was what she was thinking, listening to the scraping and scrabbling of the huge beast come to eat them, wishing there had been an adult - any adult - there to defend them and knowing only too well that the best she could put up against anything that sounded so big would never be nearly enough.

What she said, in a low, trembling, horrified whisper, was this: "Hide!"

And as if that one word had somehow broken her spell of paralysis, the little fledgling immediately turned to the other little girl, wings half unfolded in urgency. "Quick! Quickquickquick, get in the corner! Really far back! Press yourself in, look like the tree," she hissed, panic shining in her eyes. "It can't eat us if it can't find us! Hide!!"
