((Oh, oh, another question !

Would it be on-target to believe at, at least in the past, deities had the abilities to alter their apparence at will ? And how drastically could they do so ?

I don't really want to go in too much detail in thread because it would spoil a bit of plot I has with the Nae, but I imagine that someone like, say, Echo, would really rather have actual contact with her own followers instead of having her aoidei represent her all the time... but as we all know, multiple female deities of music, different appearences, yadda yadda. >> ))



Okay,

So the problem with saying 'yes they have total mutability' because, well, they are gods....is that someone at some point is going to just take it too far.

But in context of the shop, and these are the True Gods, yes, they did have many faces, and would appear to many different races. The bodies they inhabit are a mix of their 'true form' and the binding to a single base provided by the host. Otherwise, they are forces, primal and unformed.

So. I guess the answer is that until youth stage, unless otherwise expressed in their powers, no they cannot change their form appearance wise.

Once at youth stage, try to keep it within reason. They can take on aspects of their element, or aspects of race (such as looking like a dwarven version of themselves or a tauric version) , but keep it basic. I don't want to have to patrol this. There should always be features that they keep, their symbolic features, that would reveal them not only as deific, but would clue followers and scholars as to whom they were talking to.

Most gods, even of different pantheons, have specific images and symbols associated with them, and those often overlap. Cats are associated with more then one fertility goddess, for example.
So if you are planning on playing with this aspect of the game, my solution is that you have to choose ad write up a bio that states what your deity's primary aspects are (at least 3), what their symbols are, and the stick to it.

Deity Name: Nergal
Permanent(Primary) Features: Uh, I'll mostly stick with what already has been established ...
  • His obvious albinism. It is quite fitting, as white is associated with Death in just as many cultures as black *points @ Medea's quest thread* is in others. Though, he might have the appearance of an actual albino, with just very pale skin as opposed to pure white, but not the red eyes to go with it.
  • The presence of ghosts, be it Will o' the Wisps, poltergeists, or the like.
  • The presence of fog/miasma, which generally comes from/is his wings. However, so far I've handled this as Nergal being able to tone this down to his wings/the fog being nigh invisible. Edit: As his wings are more like ghosts of the true wings he once had, they might actually only visible to those who can see ghosts, but invisible to your average Joe. OuO
  • The air seeming to be cold in close vicinity to him. This is not a real physical effect, sensors or thermometers wouldn't pick up any real temperature change (just as no rise in atmospheric moisture would be registered in the fog that accompanies him so often). People perceive the temperature change differently. To some it might feel like a cold draft of air, to some like a sudden chill, to others like having just stepped from bright sunlight into the shadows. Or like someone just stepped onto their grave. n_~
  • When manifesting in the Living world, the place will likely be something heavily related to the dead, such as a graveyard, catacombs, a morgue and so on. Or a place where many people are dying/have died, such as battlefields, locations of major plagues et cetera. Something he'd been drawn to.
  • Generally, there would always be pointers that he is dead. Like his body temperature being that of a corpse's, or bearing garment that is typically associated with the dead. Generally these portents would point to him being a ghost rather than one of the undead. Pointers to him being an actual deity would be the obvious ease with which he commands other ghosts, the knowledge he possesses which could only be gained from the dead themselves, or him being witnessed as he 'takes in' the souls of the dead into his body. Less obvious signs would be that he never really has to pay for anything in the mortal realms, as people will feel compelled to invite him, or the waiter simply forgets about his bill ... stuff like that. Also not-so-obvious, his presence may cause those around him to suddenly think back of deceased relatives, acquaintances ...

  • A U turned upside down, often used as a symbol for caves. Edit: I'm so ******** dumb. It's a ******** Omega, that's what it is. *headdesks*
  • Caves in general.
  • A crown of bones, as it has appeared on the fate stones.
  • Bones in general.
  • The magatama.
  • Scales, signifying his function as the judge of the dead, probably a symbol shared with Glaucon and Kyrjadis.

Permanent(Primary) Features:
- Unnaturally bright blue eyes, even if the color does not manifest in the race naturally.
- Purple eyelashes/eye make-up
- Does not manifest wings usually, but the sound they make still follow her
- Long, pointed ears
- The presence of strings, mostly as a tail

Symbols:
- A harp, as shown by the fate stones
- A lyre
- A Flute
- A golden G-Clef
- Conch Shells
- Songbirds, most notably Nightingales

Deity Name: Lacrymosa
Permanent Features: No Eyes, though the empty sockets tend to be conveniently hidden behind sunglasses, under a mourning veil, in the shadow of a hood, or by Lacrymosa's hair. Otherwise she assumes the traits of the races she's representing, though it's less herself actively doing any shapeshifting but more like what people are expecting to see when they look at her. She'd always wear some sort of mourning garb/fashion, and often wear a wreath or carry a bouquet of wilting flowers. Her hair is usually an unkempt mess. Occasionally she's accompanied by her crow, Poe.

Deity Name: Ankou
Permanent(Primary) Features:
- Usually pale skin for the race, kind of like a normal albino with a slight blue tint.
- Eyes stay gold-on-gold / black sclera
- Crows tend to flock, and follow him. They will get unusually close to him, compared to other humanoids, and some will ever perch on his shoulder when they had showed no sign of domestication prior.
- Likewise, spirits tend to follow him and keep close. Their presence can be seen by oracles and whoever can see the dead, and can be felt by those less-attuned. They often take the form of hitodamas around him.
- He usually has Gungnir on his person wherever he is going.

- Crows, shared with Cosine, Kyrie and probably others.
- Forget-me-nots
- Orange marigolds
- Magatamas

Deity Name: Endiovar
Permanent(Primary) Features:
+ Pale-white skin with golden fleckings in various places; Endiovar's flesh remains the same whether it be fur, feather, skin or other.
+ Deeply velvet, violet lips (in the case of a creature without lips, the color becomes used on inner tissues, pawpads, nipples, etc.
+ Jade eyes and white lashes.
+ Movements never create/cause sounds; Endiovar could be crashing through brush roughly and not a sound would come forth - no matter how large or small his form has become.

His wings may or may not manifest depending on the species he is interacting with.

Symbols: Aum (also spelled "Om") - see here - Roses (especially clasped by or atop lips), Herons (Heron-feather crowns) and/or doves, and of course, a finger over lips.

- One eye golden/gemlike, the other eye peacock-colored
- Black skin/scales/fur/whatever as the primary color of her appearance
- If feathers are naturally present on the being she appears as, some feathers become peacock-colored
- Nearly always appears as a visually appealing/sexually attractive example of whatever race

Crows are drawn to her/ she communicates easily with them.
Wooden and crow feather hair charms. These will stay on her person no matter what the form.

Dyad - 2 first true female number.
Triangle with a Crow within - seen on the temple at Inabata.
