ok, so i don't know how many schools do this, but in my band, the freshmen have their own band and the sophomores, juniors, and seniors are split up into two different groups. the upper group is the wind ensemble, and the lower is the symphonic band. for two years now, i've been in the symphonic band, even tho i know i could be in wind ensemble. to make matters worse, the director flat out said that "the wind ensemble director selected who he wanted in the wind ensemble, and i got what's left." is it just me, or does that seem totally insensitive and rude? then he wonders why nobody give a flying fart in space about playing in the symphonic band. he pretty much told us that we're the wind ensemble's trash. not only that, but i'm sure that there is some favoritism in the chair placement... most of the higher ups in the wind ensemble have parents that are in the band boosters... and (at least in the percussion section) ppl taking lessons from a certain person get lower places than others... in my section (euphonium), the first chair in wind has a parent that does alot for the directors... the mom even went so far as to argue with the directors when her daughter didn't become section leader during marching season... any ways... does anybody else's band have favoritism problems??

There's this Trumpet kid who's hella good in my band and my BD sorta worships the ground he walks on. But he's reeally good. But still doesn't deserve all the praise. He's... strange, to say the least.

My school does...I'm in symphonic band. But next year symphonic and Wind ensemble kids can take concert band as a second band class with a different instrument. I play French horn in symphonic band and i might play baritone in concert band

I've come to the conclusion that high school band directors are the worst breed of people ever! I feel thy pain.

well, in my old school (when there was 76 members and then when i moved it dropped down to like 20...>.>) there was the beginning band: full of 7th and 6th graders ( i was a 6th grader ) and the 8th graders advanced to symphonic band. so...we had different periods of band classes, like my band class ( former trombone player and now percussionist ) was in 7th period, the last class of the day and we'd gather after school for emergency practices. so....anyways! our band director liked the ones who would play better and actually PRACTICE. most of us didn't, so then we totally sucked most the time 'cause we had idiots >.>... confused so what we did was when we had chair tests for the low brass our bd would do each section at a time. sometimes i wondered if he had favorites...counting me there were 3 girls in the ENTIRE class. so, i went from 5th chair to 3rd chair to 1st chair. i wondered if i as his fav 'cause 1. always nice to me 2. i was responsible 3. i wasnt a lughead like some of my fellow trombone players 4. idk............................................................................... or maybe patrick was his 2nd fav...idk....

Sorry to say it but your band director sounds like a jerk. neutral
Our school has a band system similar to yours. We have:
Concert band (almost all Frshman are in it first semester unless our BD needs spots filled in the higher bands.) it is basically the freshman/beginner band
Symphonic Band The middle band. People of every grade are in it.
Wind Symphony The top band. Mostly seniors and Juniors, with some underclassmen. I went crazy when I found out I made Wind Symphony in my sophomore year.
Our band directors do not judge the audition process for second semester bands. Instead, they hire teachers and other musical people from other schools to judge because they don't want to make biased decisions.
There seem to be favoritism problems in the marching band auditions for drum majors and section leaders. But I really don't want to get started on that, especially since this is concert discussion. xD

Bands:
Freshman band (JV2): it's in the name. Only freshmen allowed
Symphonic (JV1): Some good freshmen and who ever is left that didn't make it into the top bands
Honors (Varsity 2): Halfway decent players who play advanced high school peices. Mainly Juniors and sophmores
Woodwind Ensmble (Varsity 1): All seniors and a very few select juniors and suprisingly 1 freshmen flute. They play collage level music and are infamously known as the favorites band
I'm not gonna lie there's definantly some favoritisim going on in my band.
We all know who's gonna be in the top band before auditions happen. it's a known fact that if you're not his favorite he has no hope for you, like Me. I've been in Freshmen and went straight to symphonic in my sophmore year. Then for tryouts I practiced really hard and the day of tryouts I was sick and even then I still beat out half the clarinet section. Even with that I still ended up in symphonic this year. So instead of just not even trying and such I'm rebelling by MAKING my BD have to spend time with me and see how much talent I have XD
I showed him how good I was when I was the only clarinet in my class who could play all 3 of the marching band movements by memory even after being switched down to 3rd. Then I showed him how good I was when I did the playing test and got 1st chair so he pulls the 1st clarinets, flutes, and saxs out to work with us alot. Now my current fancy is the fact that I'm one of the only 2 people in the Symphonic band trying out for region XD so he has to pull me and the other clarinet aside to work with us.
it's very funny cause he's slowly starting to see that I have talent and I'm not hopeless.
So hopefully by next semester I'll be in Honors band >.<
The key is even if your BD keeps putting you in the lowest band then don't just settle for it MAKE him listen by doing every thing that you can.

Well, my school has Symphonic band and concert band. I am a freshman. There were only two freshman selected for symphonic band, I was one. I was pretty excited about that. I play alto sax by the way. whee Our bands never change by the semester, after marching season is over, we have one audition, and you're in symphonic band or concert band. People in symphonic band don't have to audition every year to be in it again, but anyone in concert band has to re-audition. All seniors are automatically in symphonic band. The other freshman and I are lucky because starting next year, all freshman are in concert band regardless of how good they are. Needless to say, some of the sophomores and juniors were not happy about us freshman making it in, and not them.
I dont know about any of you, but I am really bored with concert season sweatdrop ......now that I've had my first taste of marching season as a freshman. I mean, we go to competition and stuff, still not as fun as marching season.
I simply cannot imagine anyone every quiting band after they've experiened marching season.
Don't get me wrong, I love concert season still. But, marching is still my favorite.

My school has five different bands. Jazz 1, Jazz 2, Wind Ensemble (seniors and juniors), Symphonic (some juniors, mostly sophomores, and one freshmen), and Concert (mostly or all freshman).
My Band director is an awesome person! I can't believe people hate their directors. They are a necessity to the band, expect for my jazz band 2.

my school has two bands, symphonic winds and symphony band. i'm a freshmen and what i had to do was easy if i practiced but of course i didn't so out of three tubas i get symphony band but i have to say doing the f chromatic schale is kinda rough so yeah. oh suprisingly enough alot of freshmen made it into symphonic winds which i'm not suprised. but this is funny all the troumbones went to symphonic winds but all the bass clarinets stayed in symphony band. blaugh

We have Concert Band (No one cares, freshmen, rejects, etc.) and Symphonic Band (Honors band). I'm in Concert band...where I suppose I probably should be. But yes, we have favoritism too =/

I'm a freshman. This year, the school decided that freshman aren't aloud to be in symphonic band. It sucks cause they're some freshman, including me (not trying to be arrogant) are really great and symphonic band is a way to really challenge us instead of concert band being easy.

From what I can tell, so far my band has no favoritism problems. I'm only a freshman, so I've had an audition for a band placement in 8th grade (when the directors didn't really know me) and for the second semester. The second semester audition, the directors treated it like region auditions. They gave us cuts to play of our region music, they sat facing away from us. There was a small wall between the trumpets auditioning and the directors judging. That seems pretty unbiased to me.
I have yet to see how we audition for band placements for next year (first semester) when the directors get to know us.
I play trumpet. My school has 3 band classes. Symphonic (Pretty much all freshmen), Junior Varsity AKA JV (middle band of the school), and Varsity (Mostly Juniors and Seniors, very few freshmen and sophomores). I ended up making varsity band for both semesters this year.
