I know that a lot of people use the G.E.N. as their only source for prices for items on Gaia. Most people don't really check or look into how these numbers are obtained, and the other price guides don't always have the exact prices. I know people who will just get a rare/uncommon, check the G.E.N. and sell it for around whatever it said. Not that I'm saying it would (Because I heart the G.E.N.) but in some way does the G.E.N. control the economy on Gaia?

This was a key issue during much of the winter. People began questioning whether the GEN shouldn't be deleted or removed as a sticky (before the advent of the EVIL and the at-the-time-JPG).
During the price guide conflicts, there was a lot of debate as well whether the GEN should remain a part of the Exchange or not, but in the end, I believe it was decided by the mods that the use of any price guide proved to be beneficial to the Exchange community.
Though addressing the current issue, does the GEN control the economy... I guess you could say it does, but wouldn't that mean that all price guides control the economy in some way? After all, the GEN isn't the only price guide available, but it seems to be the most widely quoted. I dunno.
But in the end, even though we put these so-called ranges on the uncommons, rares, and other such items, we are constantly surprised at how some items can rise in value almost overnight. Testament to this was the Jacked-up Shirt and Pants. Items can be sold over any price guide's range, but I personally believe that a guide simply reflects the economy and how the sellers feel.
For example, the current price "ranges" for the Halo. No one's biting at 30million+ offers for it, so as a price guide, we have to show that the value of this item is what people are willing to pay for it to give uninformed users an idea of how much they will need to accumulate to gain the item they desire
I don't know anyone who would pay 10k for a fox tail, for example. Heck, I won't even pay for a coon tail just because I don't value it at the 5k+ that others value it at, but still. In the end simply because this is a capitalist society, the buyers are the true influences in the economy.
Blaahh... I'm going to stop before I start rambling...

So if somebody wants to buy a Halo for 10 mill then whoever owns one will be like, "These item is valued at 20 Million+ more then your gonna pay." ?

La-Nighty So if somebody wants to buy a Halo for 10 mill then whoever owns one will be like, "These item is valued at 20 Million+ more then your gonna pay." ? It's more like they won't get any nibbles at all simply because I believe the Halo has hit a ceiling. No matter how much someone offers for one, it's doubtful at best that a Halo will trade hands simply because they are so difficult to to obtain now.
In the case of extremely-sought-after, valued items like that, users pretty much disregard price guides just because it's difficult to give any kind of estimate for them, hence why for the GEN, we leave the upper value as an extreme question mark.
Someday, I'm sure a halo owner will go for that 10 million offer, but until then, we're obligated to report what users are willing to pay for any item, whether it be a Halo or a Hockey Mask.

Aqua's right, the Price guides (Not just GEN) do have influence on the economy, but the way I see it is ultimately teh will of the buyer is paramount. Thene again the Economy's bad enough, some regulation of the economy might not be bad.

Honestly, from helping out, and just being a general lurker, the GEN is a reflection of the actions of the users in the exchange. I mean that's what the whole link list section is for. Price ranges will only change if there are proofs to show this. Whether it's the most common of threads in the exchange, or less relied on offers, marketplace prices, these numbers don't just come out of thin air. Honestly though, when it comes down to it, the final response is always that the GEN is a price GUIDE. No one has to sell their items in the offered price ranges, and we in fact encourage people to think for themselves. But just because you may value your hockey mask for 10k doesn't mean anyone else will. wink And ummm.....yeah. Guide. Link proofs. Integrity and a whole lot of time and effort. This is what makes the GEN in my opinion a great part of the exchange.

God, I remember that. People actually thought we were this giant conspiracy >_> I stick to GEN because, well, I know the people, so I can count on it being[what I feel is] accurate [although I don't always agree with the prices... 5k for coon tail... tch!] I don't think GEN is the running affector for the GEN. I don't know about SIN [never looked at it], but EVIL [from when I last checked] was still kind of popular [even though I personally feel sometimes it came be a load of crap]. As alwayts the guides will affect the exchange, but do not dominate, as it always has been 3nodding And no matter what, I feel it's much better than before the guides even existed gonk >_>

Without the price guides? All I remember is that it wasn't pretty, but that's vague because I never really went into the Exchange until August, never got involved with the GEN until October perhaps...
But Chaows, Shy, don't you two remember? We got a taste of what the Exchange would be like without the price guides back in April during the glitch/mod-having-too-much-fun/mysterious force that deleted all of the price posts in SIN, the GEN, and parts of EVIL.
Oh.. my... gosh... that was one of the most traumatic experiences I've ever had on Gaia, and that's amazing because I don't normally allow myself to be affected by forum-related stuff, but I distinctly remember being very stressed out as I worked to restore the whole GEN from ver. I... ;_;

But yeah, before the price guides, if you weren't careful, you and your mom were easily screwed. So you basically had to now the proper way to buy 3nodding Luckily, I do comparison shopping IRL so it was fun to do... well no I lie. But easier. It just took a lot longer to buy something so you would be sure you weren't paying too much, or selling for too little [like under sellback]

It was one of the most stressful weekends I ever had, and that includes college midterm exam and finals studying.
Oh yeah... a long time ago, in my very first E. Trunk, I got an Angelic Collar. This was back in the time of the Chatbox and the fledgeling Exchange, so I wore it proudly. A user asked to buy it from me for 500g. Now 500g was a lot of money to a little newbie to me, so I accepted.
Then I found out I could've sold it for over 2k. stressed Just an example of a singular lack of knowledge, really.

But yeah, things were crazy over that weekend... thankfully, you're correct though. Things turned out alright.
Woops, that was ver. II --> ver. III. ^^; That was the 2nd guide under the control of the G.E.N. dummy, which meant that I was able to create a new one in the first place.

Ah, yeah, that makes more sense. I don't think I ever really got into the GEN until ver III (we're on v. IV, right?). As for showing your age, I didn't notice since I'm still pretty much a n00b compared to most of you. xd

I guessed I've missed a lot then, if you're on v4 now xd I left shortly after the introduction of the GEN account... about a week or twoafter that, I was finding it too hard to keep up since I didn't have enough spare time to read through all of the stuff gonk Quote: Ahhh... consider yourself fortunate then. It was one of the most stressful weekends I ever had, and that includes college midterm exam and finals studying. xd You know you're really into Gaia when....
