They arrived to the farm as promised. Diego hopped out and grabbed Domani up, again not paying attention to the fact that she had a wound that would undoubtedly hurt for all of the jarring around. Why should he?
"Be nice to Grandma!" Lothario called, staying at the vehicle. Man. He had blood to clean up. It wasn't staying here to dry!
Elisa's nose had stopped bleeding by the time they arrived, but she still stepped out slower, "We'd be lucky." She muttered to Lothario's request, then followed them out to the room.
Elisa proved to be quite adept at taking care of injuries. As a matter of fact, she assured Domani that she'd taken classes. She didn't quite have the medical equipment, and this was going to HURT, but it had to be done. . .Diego only too gladly helped keep Domani held down while Elisa took care of the leg.
It would be a good 48 hours before Domani was awake and coherent enough to really begin to notice the dynamics of the home. Lothario and his mother spent much of their time working on the farm, so it was Diego and Elisa that she was stuck with all day. Diego had went from his original attitude to all but ignoring Domani. Elisa remained concerned.
Three days after they'd arrived, Diego plopped down in a chair in the living room Domani was in, turning off the television program, "So, kid, you ain't got a home. What now?" He demanded.
Well, maybe it was a good thing that Diego had been ignoring her. Social kindness didn't seem to be his strong point.

She couldn't quite hold back the shrieks and thrashing when they fixed her leg, she could remember that. She remembered cursing a bit.
When she finally woke up, she stayed silent, mostly. She didn't want to get successfully kicked out. She just returned to her daydreaming, talking only when she was spoken to. She might've partially transformed when she did so but she didn't pay much attention. But she did make certain that her leg didn't transform. Somehow, the muscles and skin and bones stretching did not seem like a good idea for a bullet wound. Just somehow.
Suddenly Domani was jarred out of her comforting daydreams by Diego, who she was convinced was going to keep ignoring her forever. What was she going to do? Good question. She assumed he was going to answer that, not give her the choice. This was... surprising. She chewed her lip, trying to come up with something that sounded not so bad. She couldn't come up with any choices, let alone some that were acceptable. "That depends if you guys have anything planned," She finally answered, pulling her undamaged leg close to her chest. "And if I'm involved in those plans," She added. After all, she doubted he'd be willing to involve her in most of his plans.

Diego smiled now, pleased with that answer, "Well, our plans are to go for a bit of relaxation on a warm beach somewhere. Quite far away from here. You don't seem to be the sort to appreciate a trip like that though. I doubt you fully understand even what we're doing for you." His eyes grew serious.
"Perhaps if you told her," Elisa came up. She always seemed to appear when Diego came near Domani.
"Ah, but I thought you wanted to be gentle with your new baby," Diego's sarcasm made Elisa roll her eyes. He turned back to Domani, "You know movies where they do awful experiments on aliens that come? Or have you read anythin' about what they did to Holocaust victims? The facility they were taking you to was that sort of thing for evolveds. Elisa could tell you about it." He looked pointedly to Elisa, who immediately averted her eyes, hands coming up self-consciously and protectively around herself, "And now they know who you are."

Domani glanced at Elisa. Oh. She felt sympathy for the girl. She didn't get to that place but the place she went seemed bad enough. Jail versus Holocaust conditions. She shuddered. She was glad she just got jail. But that didn't mean she wanted jail. She was terrified at the thought of going back.
But what were her choices then? She'd be easy pickings by herself, especially with a bullet wound. Sticking with Diego and Elisa seemed like the best idea. Even though Diego seemed to be acting a bit nicer, that might be temporary. She might do something wrong and she'd get kicked out. "I don't think," She said carefully, "that if they know who I am, I'd last long by myself." She was not sure if she should ask to join. What if they said no? She shifted uncomfortably at the idea.

"Yeah, that's probably true." Diego agreed, sitting back and crossing his arms, "So d'ya got a plan B for yer life?" He smirked at her.

He just had to go and make her say it, didn't he? Domani evaluated and reevaluated her choices. Nothing remotely good and most of which ended up with her in a cage, getting poked with various things just to see if she jerked. "No," She said, visibly wilting. She liked options. But this time there weren't any. At least, any in her control.

"Well, I guess you best be figurin' that out." Diego assured her, then stood, "Good luck. You got three days. The rest of us are leavin' then."
"Diego."
"Shut up, Elisa."
Elisa glared at his back, then shot a look to Domani. Well?!?

Domani looked up. Did that mean....? "Does that mean I'm invited?" She asked Elisa, wanting reassurance. Or did it mean he hoped she found a second plan in three days. Ugh. Nuances. So irritating but so important.

Diego stopped walking. He made a harrump sound. "Why would I invite a brat that can't appreciate what she has?" But his demand didn't sound as harsh as it could have.
"Di---"
"Shut UP, Elisa."
Elisa again looked to Domani, nodding. Go on. . .

Domani bit her lip hard, almost making it bleed. She was never good at those on the spot question, when you have to answer honestly and in the way the teacher wanted. And this one was about her, which meant it might have a whole bunch of room to go wrong. "Because..." She stopped. Don't start a sentence with because, she remembered her father telling her. It makes it sound weaker and negligible. Diego was asking why she wasn't 'negligible'.
She dropped the leg she was holding and bounced it. "You offered to train me once. And you put a whole bunch of work into rescuing me. Those things mean you thought I could become good with my powers. That wouldn't have changed because my power is still the same," There. A nice, solid, respectable answer. Once that appealed to what she thought would draw him most. Logic. Not emotions. But she couldn't help throwing a bit of spark in, "And I don't think you'd want to give those people another guinea pig to play with. Not when you get her yourself."

Diego turned around, no expression on his face. He considered Domani, then nodded once, "On my terms." He warned her, "We don't have room for error, compromise, or arguments."

Domani gave a small smile but inside she was cheering. I'm not going to die or go back to that jail! She recovered herself after a few seconds. "What're your terms, then?" So I know, she added mentally. Rules were hard to follow unless one knew what they were. And double checking was a good idea when it came to something that might kick her out. Just in case.

Diego came around and sat back down, "We're gonna have to do some fancy footwork. Lots of it, and---" He frowned at Domani's vague expression and started again, "We're gonna be lyin'. A lot. Truth can't be told no more, and you'll have to go along with that. Just try to play the part we give ya. When I tell you something, it ain't for no stupid reason. I've been around the block a few times, and I know what I'm doing. Trust me." He nodded to Elisa, "S'why she's still alive. Ain't that right?"
Elisa frowned as she tried to understand the slang and accent, then slowly nodded as comprehension caught up to the moment. She spoke Italian back to Domani, "We don't wish to do anything illegally, but when the very people that are supposed to be protecting you are hurting you, sometimes we don't have a choice. Diego knows how to handle these situations, please listen to him first. Then me." It was the kind way to clarify what Diego had just said.

Domani nodded and answered them both in English, "I don't mind lying," She said in an agreeable way that meant she agreed and understood the entire thing. She could trust Diego, she thought. He seemed to be fine with her now, not holding a grudge at all. And if Elisa trusted Diego and was obviously still alive, she figured she could do the same and stay just as alive, if she played her cards like he told her to. She didn't like it, but she gave authority to Diego. No more lone wolf Domani. That was a change.
