Abortion is banned under Egyptian law (Getty)
Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning has ruled that any woman who becomes pregnant as a result of rape must undergo an abortion.

The Islamic Research Council of Cairo-based Al-Azhar has declared immediate terminations are essential to maintain "social stability".

Egyptian law bans abortion except on the grounds of "necessity", which includes instances when a woman's life or health is in danger, or in cases of fetal abnormality.

But Al-Azhar has called for changes to such regulations .

Doctor's permission

"A raped woman must terminate the pregnancy immediately upon learning of the pregnancy if a trusted doctor gives her clearance for the abortion," the institution said.

The independent Egyptian Centre for Women's Rights says an average of two women are raped every hour in Egypt.

Experts say many factors contribute to high levels of rape and sexual harassment, including rising unemployment, the huge cost of marriage and the fact that sex outside marriage is forbidden.

I find it hilarious that he claims that termination of rape pregnancies must take place for "social stability."

I seriously laughed. "Anti-choice" was just given a whole new meaning.

I can't believe they're forcing them to abort. The women are traumatized enough, that could possible make things worse for them.

It's not the woman's fault she was raped.

Seriously, which is worse, forcing a woman to stay pregnant or forcing a woman to get an abortion?

I suppose it's better than executing women who are ********. sad

In some places in the middle east do punish the woman for rape. I'm not sure about execution but they had whipped and thrown them in jail.

In a few countries, there is no such thing as rape. It never happens ninja neeevveerr...

In others, the woman is punished for the rape. Saying had she not "made her self a target" it never would have happened

And still in others, a woman can not plead rape unless there are three men willing to testify on her behalf...and even then, if it was found she "made her self a target" the case is thrown out....

Yup, women are often executed for adultery. Rape counts as adultery because whether the woman consented or not makes no difference--she "had sex" with someone who wasn't her husband and is therefore an adulteress. If she's raped by her husband, though, that's not considered a crime.

She's not executed by something relatively humane like lethal injection, either. They're lucky if they're shot.

Any time someone claims to be pro-choice (including governments), and then turns around and says that a group of people MUST have abortions-- that really shows the hypocrisy.

Women who are raped and pregnant aren't dirty street-corner derelicts. They don't deserve to be forced through a traumatic medical procedure that could very well scar them, if they wanted their child.

This law really sucks. Maaaajor disappointment. stare

Also, I get pissed off when people say "she was asking for it", or anything along those lines. Shows that laws are ******** up everywhere, not just in our countries.

I just wanted to interject something...nowhere in there does it say anything about being pro-choice. This isn't an example of abortion rights, it's an example of abuse involving abortion.

I haven't seen anyone pro-choice supporting this, in fact, any pro-choice person I've talked to about this has opposed it (obviously). The extremists might support it, but then...extremists are freaking scary.

But yeah. I've seen people argue that women who were raped should have fought harder, or covered up more. It can't possibly be the rapist's fault. Whole countries that subscribe to this thought just plain scare me.

Alright, stupid wording on my part. I meant in a way that pro-choice laws (allowing abortion) open the door for people to cherry-pick through abortion laws, and use it to their own sick means. If abortion laws didn't exist at all, laws like this wouldn't exist.

I didn't mean that this is a law that the choicers would support, but the law, in its' basis of allowing abortion, and for the fact that an abortion takes a life no matter who it's done to, is related to pro-choice laws.

Also, pro-abortion people might support this law. And yes, they exist.

Even if I was raped, I'd keep the kid. It's horrible that they'd force these women to terminate.

It'd be terrible, being forced to have a child in my womb be killed.
Their philosophy would be: "If you don't wear a veil, it's your fault if you get raped."
This really makes me thankful that I live in a different country.
