Hello everyone! In the many years since I started reading Harry Potter, I've heard names and spells pronounced different ways. I thought that it might be fun to see how everyone pronounces different words. After 5 posts, we'll change the word. The last person of the 5 gets to pick the new word to discuss. I'll try to put together a list of words in case someone can't think of one.

Possible Words:
Kreacher
Regulas
Hermione
Azkaban
Dobby

You don't have to use something off this list. It's only for if you want to. Feel free to come up with your own words.

We'll start with the word "Accio."

I've always pronounced it with the c's sounding like an S [like in the word circle]. When I say Accio, it sounds like a-see-oh.

This sounds like a fun idea!

I pronounce Accio as ah-key-oh. I'm not sure why, but I had a friend who read them first and got me into them, and I think that was just how she had always pronounced it, so I just followed suit.

Why can't marriage be...

I pronounced it "ahk-see-oh". It would be like in the word "accelerate", would it not?

...just as universal as love?

I used to think it was pronounced ahk-see-oh as well, but then I listened to the Order of the Phoenix audiobook, and ever since then I say ah-see-oh. Damn you Jim Dale!

I'm really impressed, Josephine. This thread is a brilliant idea. Good job!

I always thought it was pronounced "Ah-shee-oh" like ash. Now, I'm not so sure about that anymore. "ahk-see-oh" sounds a lot better.

I used to pronounce it ah-see-oh, but then after the fourth movie I started pronouncing it the way Daniel Radcliffe did because it sounded better. (ah-key-oh)

Oh, yeah, since I'm the fifth post I guess I better come up with a new word... And I can't think of anything good. Someone else give a word.

Maybe that is where I got the ah-key-oh pronunciation from! I don't know, I just like the way it sounds! whee

How about the next word being Horcrux?

I pronounce it hor-kruh-cks, with the hor sounding like "pour," or the other word that it sounds like (which I didn't think would be appropriate to post). If that even made sense...I hope it did!

*laughs* It did make sense, and I think your judgment is spot on.

I pronounce it the exact same way actually - hor-kruh-cks. smile

Don't worry! It made plenty of sense. I pronounce it the same way too ~ hor-kruh-cks.

mmmh.. I've always pronounced the c's in Accio as k's. Why? Because in the "Latin for Beginners" book I have, it says that in Latin, the C's are always pronounced as k's. :O

That might also be the reason I pronounced Crucio with "Kru-kio". I was actually suprised that it was pronounced in the movie "Kru-shio".

Of course, that's only one of the several ways to speak Latin, since no one knows for sure how it was pronounced.

With the Horcrux, I also pronounce is "hor-kruh-cks". No idea why though! *laughs'

It just seemed the most natural for me. ^^

Looks like we're all agreed on the pronounciation of Horcrux - though I think there is debate on the plural - Horcruxi or Horcruxes!

I found an official pronounciation guide with audio file attached - it's in the Other section in our Index

Still a fun thread- to see how we each individually pronounce something!

I pronounce Horcrux that way too.
3nodding
And I like Horcruxes, for plural.

Hmm, do I choose a new word?
If so, then...
Erised.
Like, the Mirror of Erised.

I used to say e-ryes-d. With a long 'e' and 'i'. Now I say eh-ris-ed. Short 'e' and 'i'. >_<

I pronounce Erised like Eh-rii(picture an accent on the I)-sed...I don't know why though, must be the spanish. This is a great thread idea by the way!
PostPosted: Sat Dec 29, 2007 5:00 pm

My pronunciation of Erised is a little odd. I usually reverse the "e" and the "i" in the middle of the word, so when I say it, it sounds like eh-reh-sid. I'm not entierly sure why, it's just the way I've always said it.

I always pronounce Erised as ear-eh-said. I mispronounce almost everything due to a slight accent (I also pronounce the o's in mom and box more like "ah" so mahm and bahx).
