Since the Yu-Gi-Oh! (YGO!) card game is as confusing as the opposite sex, I decided to create this topic the clear up some card or strategy related issues.
Every once in a while, I'll change the card being discussed in the post below to another one. Feel free to post other cards you have questions on and it just might be featured!

FAQtphebay: Frequiently Asked Questions That Probably Haven't Even Been Asked Yet

Q: I want you to review this card!
A: Maybe I will. Maybe I won't. If you have a specific question on a card I'll try to help. Other Gaians feel free to ask and answer questions too!

Q: What do you do with old reviews?
A: I'll be putting the name of the card in my Previous Cards post below. if you want all the info I typed up on it, right now I'm trying to think of a way to do that and keep the space used up to a minimum. Suggestions for this would be nice.

Q: I'm afraid I have to disagree/agree with...
A: Go ahead and post comments, criticisms and gripes on my review and/or the card; I'm open for suggestions.

Q: How do you know this stuff?!
A: I read other Yu-Gi-Oh! sites and have expirience with the game. I don't know everything, but I hope I can help with at least most of your card problems.

Q; Hah, hah! Your name is "Burger King"!
A: ...Okay, first off this isn't a question. Second off, the "BK" in my name stands for "BomberKid"; 'cause I like Bomberman games. biggrin

Current Card:
Dark Magician (DM)
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Quote:
Level: 7
Atribute: Dark
Type: Spellcaster
ATK: 2500
DEF: 2100
Description: "The ultimate wizard in terms of attack and defense."

It’s the one, the only, Dark Magician! Though he isn’t really the best Spellcaster in terms of ATK and DEF, he is the most versatile and creative one… but you can’t tell that just by looking at this card. Years ago I loathed DM because Summoned Skull had the same ATK and was Dark and only required one tribute. Plus the only card that went with him was DM Girl and its effect wasn’t all that great. But since then there have been numerous booster packs and, most importantly, the Spellcaster’s Judgment Structure Deck to make anyone look at DM in a new light. I’ll take a look at Yugi’s favorite card’s cards (say that 10 times fast…) to give a decent assessment of DM.

Quote:
Dark Magician Girl
Dark / Spellcaster / ****** (6) / 2000 ATK, 1700 DEF
"Increase the ATK of this monster by 300 points for each "Dark Magician" or "Magician of Black Chaos" in either player's Graveyard."

Not too complicated. The 300 ATK boost is okay. If you have a DM or two in your Grave you can use Magician’s Circle to Special Summon DM Girl and have a 2300+ ATK monster instead of a 2000 or lower ATK monster. (Personally, I’d choose Magical Marionette because it has the same ATK and a better effect, but that’s just me.)
But DM girl has some more uses as well because she has her own cards to correspond with DM!

Sage’s Stone
You can only activate this card when there is a face-up "Dark Magician Girl" on your side of the field. Special Summon 1 "Dark Magician" from your hand or Deck.
This would be the reason to include DM Girl in your deck. This Normal Spell (basically) does Skilled Dark Magician’s job with only one Spell. However, it is very selective so if you plan on including this, make sure you have at least two DM Girls.

Quote:
Dark Sage
Dark / Spellcaster / ********* (9) / 2800 ATK, 3200 DEF
"This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned from your hand or your Deck by Tributing 1 "Dark Magician" on your side of field when you succeed in the effect of "Time Wizard". At that time, select 1 Spell Card from your Deck, add it to your hand, and then shuffle your Deck."

This is one of those cards that I refer to as the “As Seen on TV” cards ‘cause that’s the only place you should see Dark Sage, except maybe someone’s card binder. Not only do you have to have two monsters on the field, but you have to use Time Wizard’s effect and call it right to Special Summon this guy. Think of it as a Contact Fusion that only has a 50% chance of working and if it fails you’ll lose at least 1500 LP. If Lady Luck is on your side, you’ll have a pretty formidable Spellcaster and you’ll get a Spell from your deck.
Now is it worth having Dark Sage? It’s a complete dead draw early or late in the game and it very hard to summon. I hate both. It’s effect second to none, second being Ancient Gear Drill and third being Magical Hats. But it doesn’t do anything else besides that, so lets move onto a heck-ova’-lot easier Spellcaster to summon.

Skilled Dark Magician
This is the staple of DM decks. 1900 ATK and higher DEF than Gemini Elf. But let’s not forget the reason he’s an effect monster, if anyone activates 3 or more Spells successfully, you can tribute this guy for DM from your hand, deck AND Graveyard; I think a lot of people overlook the Graveyard part. The reason why I say a Spell must be activated successfully is because a Spell negated won’t give Skilled DM any counters. So if a Spell is negated with Magic Jammer, no counter. If a Spell is activated and just destroyed with Dust Tornado or MST, then he still gets a counter.

Dark Eradicator Warlock
Maybe it’s a bit overkill… maybe. The only requirement to summon this guy is a DM on your field. Activating a Normal Spell will inflict 1000 LP to your opponent and since when has inflicting damage been bad? This guy might not be that great for a regular DM deck, but for a burn deck? It’s very possible. You can center a strategy on getting DM out for without a sweat (via Swing of Memories, Ancient Rules, etc.) and send it off for Warlock. Use cards to stall attacks and protect your monsters while you bring on the pain for every Normal Spell you activate. It’s actually kind of scary thinking about- activate about 8 Normal Spells and you won the duel! And that’s not including the fact you should be using Normal Spell-burn cards like Tremendous Fire, Magical Blast, Meteor of Destruction… I think I’d better get back on track with DM before I start posting a deck list for Warlock…

Dedication Through Light and Darkness
So, you have DM on the field and don’t have Dark eradicator Warlock at hand. But you do have this nifty spell that can be activated on either player’s turn! Send one DM from your field to the Grave to summon…

Dark Magician of Chaos
I envy you if you have this card. It’s a magician of faith with 9 times the power and kicks butt. It shouldn’t even be considered a DM card with it’s versatility in different decks. But Dedication makes it one, so I gotta' type up about it, yay me.
Summon any different way and you’ll get a Spell from your Grave. But another wow factor is when it destroys a monster. Your opponent hiding behind a Sangan, Mystic Tomato or Nimble Momonga? Attack it with DM of Chaos and it’ll be sent out of play, thereby their effects won’t activate by being sent to the Grave. The downside to this powerhouse is when it’s removed from the field by destruction, being return to your hand or deck, etc. it’s sent out of play. You can use the new card from Phantom Darkness, Escape from the Dark Dimension, to get it back but DM is giving me the look… maybe I should get onto more cards to don’t center around Tributing HIM.

Dark Magic Attack
Did anyone say Harpie’s Feather Duster? No? Well maybe this card will perk your interest. Just by having Dark Magician on the field you can eliminate all of your opponent’s s/t will no downside! But until he’s on the field, this card will have to sit in your hand.

Dark Magic Curtain
It’s a hefty toll and I can’t even say it’s all that worth it. I would favor this card a whole lot more if I could summon a monster after using it, but you can’t. Use this card with great caution, because if it gets negated, the payment of half your LP is a cost so you will still have to pay it. Of course, if you’re already low on LP, it won’t make that much of a difference in a dire situation, hopefully one that would be in your favor actually.

Thousand Knives
Maybe you don’t understand yet, but destroying the right monster is tougher than you think. Sakuretsu Armor destroys only the monster that attacked, cards like Fissure and Smashing Ground choose the monster for you, Shield Crush destroys only defense monsters and some cards don’t let you target monsters on your field to destroy. (Having Lava Golem is not always so hot.) Thousand Knives destroys any monster on the field regardless of card position. Of course, this card is actually over shadowed by another card I have completely forgotten until now- magical dimension. Its cost to activate it is way easier to perform and get in the first place. Thousand Knives is a maybe.

Toon DM Girl
I almost forgot about this card too. The same effect as DM Girl with the perks of being a Toon… the only perk being if a player has Toon World activated. It can’t attack on the first turn it’s summoned and no other cards work for it other than a DM in the Grave and Toon cards. That’s it.

Miracle Restoring
A bit of a conditional card too, but not much of a cost. Just ditch two spell counters to get DM from the GRAVE. Getting those spell counters might be hard if your not playing a deck with a whole lot of them. But if you have a Skilled DM with two counters and it’s about to be destroyed, you’ll be glad you had this card face-down. “But BK,” you ask, “why is Buster Blader talked about on the card?” Okay, you probably already know the answer to this question. DM and Buster Blader combine to make-

Dark Paladin
Just a fun tip, Dark Paladin has 2900 ATK. If you attack your opponent directly with this card, Defuse it to get DM and Buster Blader to attack directly as well, that’s EXACTLY 8000 LP. Scary isn’t it? But those kinds of situations are once in a life time anyway, I guess.
Its first effect makes me shudder some because of its limitedness. Discard a Spell to stop a Spell- this is just like Spell Shield Type 8! And its latter effect doesn’t shine so much either unless you have Dragons and I certainly hope you don’t think running a Dragon/ Spellcaster deck will be successful. I’d suggest using Fusion material monsters instead of Buster Blader just to have a monster you’ll actually want and will be able to use if you cannot fuse. I hope you like how I’ve been setting up the end of each card to discuss the next one because I’ve run out of ideas. Maybe I’ll go read a book…

Magical Formula
(Incase you don’t know, this card is a book.) This is one of those cards I categorize as the “you’re-better-off-with…” cards because I can think of a lot better spells to power-up my Spellcasters and increase my LP. At least it works with two monsters.

Well that’s basically all the cards that specifically go with DM. If I missed one, post it here on the thread! And if you have a question about a term I used or something else you don’t know, ask on the thread! Remember, there are no stupid questions! (Please don’t prove me wrong though…) I am also open to comments, criticisms or gripes about the article. If you wish to view my old LaDD review, post here and I’ll PM it to you.

I’ll try to get my next article out sooner! Until then,

Previous Cards

Light and Darkness Dragon (LaDD)
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Level: 8
Type: Dragon
Attribute: Light (+ Dark because of effect)
Attack: 2800
Defense: 2400
Effect:
This card cannot be Special Summoned. While this card is face up on the field its attribute is also treated as DARK. When a Spell or Trap card is activated or the effect of an effect monster is activated, that activation is negated and this card loses 500 ATK and DEF. When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, select 1 monster in your Graveyard. Then destroy all cards on your control and Special Summon that monster.

Now I will go into detail about the effects of LaDD:

This card cannot be Special Summoned.
Simple enough. You can only Normal Summon this guy- no Premature Burial, A Hero Emerges, etc.

While this card is face up on the field its attribute is also treated as DARK.
Also simple. Just remember that this is Dark AND Light on the field. In the deck, Grave, hand, it's just a Light monster.

When a Spell or Trap card is activated or the effect of an Effect Monster is activated, that activation is negated and this card loses 500 ATK and DEF.
Now here is where things get complicated. Seriously. Now when a Spell, Trap or Monster effect ACTIVATES, whether it’s on yours or your opponent’s side of the field, this monster’s effect kicks in and starts a chain. (If you don’t know what a chain is, look it up in your rulebook or go HERE.) As the chain resolves the card that tried to activate is negated and LaDD loses 500 ATK and DEF. LaDD’s effect is NOT optional and will work without your consent or care for your well-being. cry

LaDD’s effect will only WORK if it has ATK and DEF to spare. So once its DEF reaches 400 after four negations, even though it will have 800 ATK, it can no longer negate effects. However, it will still try to activate its effect and start a chain and end up failing. Why am I telling you this? Well maybe this will be good for you if you have cards like Chain Strike or others that work with chains. And it’ll make you sound intelligent if you know stuff like this. It can start negating again if you increase the deficient stat, whether it’s with something temporary like Castle Walls or permanent like equip-cards. But there is the much more promising option of flipping it face down via Book of Moon or any similar card. Once its flipped face up again, its stats will return to normal. (While face down it can’t negate any cards, just fyi.)

LaDD’s range of negation includes cards on the field, hand, graveyard and out of play. The effect must be activated in order for this card to negate it. So if you have a card with a continuous effect like Jinzo or Protector of the Sanctuary, their effects don’t activate and won’t be negated; they just… work. And since LaDD only negates cards, they won’t be negated and destroyed. So if your opponent has a card like Ultimate Offering and activates its effect, it will be negated. But they can activate it again and your Dragon has no choice but to negate it… that is until its ATK and DEF stats get too low for it to work and effects will be able to activate. If a Spell or Trap is negated, it’s just sent to the graveyard after negation. Monsters that activate upon summoning like the Monarchs or can just activate are negated and the monster remains on the field.

This is something a little bit extra but really important for you to understand. A lot of people don’t understand this but, when a card is negated, the cost is not negated. Cards ask you to pay Life Points (LP), discard a card from your hand, tributed one monster on your side of the field, etc. are “costs”. If you activate, lets say, Exiled Force effect and tribute it to destroy a monster. The tributing part is the cost. If the card is negated with Divine Wrath or LaDD, the effect doesn’t work and you’ve just wasted a monster. If you're not sure about which cards have costs, check out the YGO! official website.

Getting into more complicated details this card’s effect activates only once- “But BK, I though it worked until its stats were too low?!” Well let me finish my sentence- the negation effect activates once per chain. So what does this mean? Simply that any cards chained after LaDD’s negation effect will work. 3nodding This card doesn’t have the ability to negate more than once in a chain. I can’t exactly explain why, but that’s just how it is. I’ll go into more detail about the fun and troublesome things you can do with this simple detail later.

When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, select 1 Monster in your Graveyard. Then Destroy all cards on your control, and Special Summon that Monster.
This last effect is pretty simple but there are a few key things to remember. LaDD doesn’t have to be destroyed on the field to activate this effect. It can be destroyed in your hand by Crush Card Virus for example. So no matter where (hand, field, etc.) or how (result of battle or card effect) it is “destroyed” the effect will begin. Fist you must choose a monster in your grave to special summon (and you can’t pick LaDD because it can’t be Special Summoned). Now all cards on your side of the field are destroyed and the selected monster is Special Summoned. The destruction side-effect will occur even if you don’t have a monster you can Special Summon or you just can’t perform Special Summons. Plus, you can’t choose a monster on your side of the field to Special Summon because the destruction effect occurs after you pick a monster in your Grave. If LaDD is sent to the Grave by a tribute, discard, etc. its effect won’t activate. Always be aware that LaDD could potentially wipe your field clean before just slapping cards down. Oh! I almost forgot, if your opponent chains this effect with Disappear or The Transmigration Prophecy or uses any other effect to remove the monster you want to Special Summon from the Graveyard, the monster will not be Special Summoned and all of your cards on your field will still be destroyed.

Extra Info, etc.
And that’s the basic jist of Light and Darkness. Now to take advantage of this card… well taking advantage of card effects is always fun but LaDD makes it more fun.

There is no way to get around the “can’t Special Summon” effect so forget about that. The Dark attribute effect can have other potentials, but the most potent one, I think, is to fuel it for a Crush Card Virus once its ATK stats are 800 and it can no longer negate effects. Or you can activate Deck Devastation Virus as a chain to LaDD.

The negation aspect can be taken advantage of by both you and your opponent. Your opponent can activate one card, LaDD will negate it and then chain with another card to destroy LaDD. Ex: LaDD attacks. Opponent activates Widespread Ruin. LaDD chains to negate the effect. Opponent chains and activates Sakuretsu Armor (bye-bye LaDD…). I should also mention that once LaDD is destroyed, the first card it tried to negate will not be negated. So if you have any other monsters in attack mode, Widespread would destroy one of them as the chain resolves. But just because a scenario like this can happen doesn’t mean you can’t perform your own tricks! Here’s a list of other cool things to do with our dragon:
- Book of Moon LaDD face down to dodge danger and rest its ATK and DEF stats!
- When LaDD is out of DEF to spare and your opponent thinks it’s alright to activate a card, LaDD will still try to negate the card. Chain LaDD with Castle Walls or anything similar to give it that extra boost to negate!
- Skill Drain LaDD to have a 2800 ATK beatstick! Its effect that activates upon destruction will still work! (Hopefully that’s a good think for you.)
- Foolish Burial-ize big monsters like Blue-Eyes or Dark Magician of Chaos. When LaDD kicks the bucket you can at least ensure you have a deadly monster to back it up.
- Use cards like Dark Coffin and the Wicked Statue-card-thing (I forget the exact name) and use their effects when LaDD gets destroyed and destroys them.
- Make LaDD a part of your negation deck! Include Jinzo, Royal Decree, Horus LV8, and more!

A deck centered on LaDD or utilizing it should be wary about your own card effects activating without their consent (Sangan, flip-effect monsters, etc.). You’re going to want cards you want to Special Summon from the Graveyard like Destiny Hero- Disk Commander. At the very least, LaDD can be that card to exhaust your opponent or crush them. If you find yourself facing this card, you suddenly become very aware of your cards and their effects and how to deplete or chain LaDD to remove this imposing threat. Maybe they can swiftly use whip up two cards to take it down. Well look at it this way, those two cards could have been used on something else and cost you more of the game. So don’t worry a lot, LaDD will get you some mileage before it done its job… that is unless he’s Forced Back, Solemn Judgment-ed, Divine Wrath-ed… well these cards are major set backs for it, but no card is without its weakness!

Overall Rating for Light and Darkness Dragon: 8.65/10
This card can lock your opponent down at the right times and win the game for you. It can also be a set back for you since most of your effects won’t get through, but with the right field set up, this won’t be too much of a problem. The Special Summon ability can set off at unexpected moments, but with some luck and the right cards, you can take full advantage of this and keep the game moving in your favor.

I got a question! Not about the effect but how to use him effectively. Dragon cards are not my specialty. But hes has a nice effect. Everytime I duel, my opponent just spam Spell/ Trap/ Monster to weaken him..
