This is the official FAQ thread for Secret Santa 2007. Post your questions, and canadiangirl89 and I will answer them. Either that or throw snakes at you. Ask wisely.

16 December Update

Feel free to discuss your gifts in this thread as well as the 111. Were they awesome, or are you planning to throw snakes at your santa? Talk about it. Some received their gifts already, but many more are on their way.

Make sure you give Meredith (canadiangirl89) a big thank you. If it weren't for her, this would have never gotten off the ground. She also sent out extra gifts to make sure everyone had one. You rock! And thanks, of course, to everyone who participated.

Oh, and by the way ... Happy holidays!

FAQs

When do I mail my gift?
This week! You can be lazy if you're only mailing a few states away, but if your recipient is in another country, 3 weeks' shipping time is ideal (in case delays occur).

Do I include my screen name with the gift?
Yes, please do.

Can I send letters or a card to the person who sends me a gift?
PM them once you get your gift and ask them if they're up for it. If they are, go ahead.

Can I send food?
Check with your country's postal regulations to see if shipping food is OK. Make sure it's non-perishable food, preferably wrapped. Don't send home-baked foods (those might spoil). Your santee may not like the food, so be warned.

Why do I have to PM you once I mail my gift?
So that if someone vanishes off the face of the earth, I can get a gift to their partner anyway.

I'm going to be busy/without Internet/on a hike through the Himalayas right after I send my gift and can't PM you. Is that okay?
Just let me know that you're going to send it, and I'll consider it mailed.

Why the snakes?
Well, why not the snakes?

QUESTION

Can you PM me Dybael's new address that isn't at her college? I'm sending Christmas cards to everyone involved in this and I don't have her new address yet.

Also *obligatory snake throw*

*runs and hides in a corner with the as of yet un-mailed SS Gift*

No. Never!!! *receives Jedi death grip* okay okay!!! xd

You may want to toss a few PMs around to see if people are OK with receiving cards. Receiving random letters from the Internet may be hard to explain to parents.

And receiving a random gift won't be?

EDIT:

All I'm saying is that they signed up for a gift. Nothing more. You can send cards, just make sure they're OK with it first.

I wishes for Christmas cards! 4laugh

Uh, no real questions, except maybe about how to set out the strange address that is set out differently to Australia, but I guess it's meant to be as it is as it was PMed to me, and I can always ask at the post office when I go to send it anyway.

A question for most people participating -particularly Aussies-(*is a post office newbie*):

Is it compulsory to put a sender address at the back of the envelope or can we just leave it blank (because it IS a Secret Santa)?

*ducks from obligatory snake throw*

Your person's in the UK, right? So I believe it would go:

Name
Street
Place
Place
Place
Country
Code thingie

Someone who lives there could explain what each line is. Each time there's a comma, put a new line. By all means, someone in the UK correct me if I messed up how it goes.

You don't have to put a return/sender address if you don't want to. However, it's good if:

(1) the package needs to be returned for some reason (if undeliverable), or
(2) you want the recipient to know who sent it before opening.

Since those don't really apply, you can omit the return address.

Back of the envelope? In the US we put the return address on the top-left. If I send you a package, it goes like this:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lebki
111 Chathread Lane
Gaia, The Internets
12345
USA

................................elaeye
................................10 FAQ Thread Lane
................................Gaia, The Internets
................................4321
................................Australia

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

If it's a letter, a stamp goes on the top-right. If it's a package, you'll take care of the postage before you send it.

In your case, just put the address somewhere and it should make it over.

One thing i'll mention is that some folks don't live in villages (the poor sods) and instead live in a town or city. To this end, omit the village.

So, as an example of myself in my parent's house

Quote:
James Smith

Greenfields (house name)
6 Tylers Way (street)
Sedbury (village)
Chepstow (town)
Monmouthshire (county)
United Kingdom (country)
NP16 7AB (postcode)

Were I still in Cardiff City, my address would be something like...

Quote:
James Smith

67, Cambrian Point (flat number and building)
North Road (street)
Cardiff (city)
South Glamorgan (county)
United Kingdom (country)
CF46 G2A (fake postcode)

Hope this helps?

It does indeed, and thanks. You can blame Ben Franklin on the differences in our postal notations. xd

I think it's a British thing. I want to name my house now.
