An intresting post by bleedingsun (omfg.. did i really just say that?) in a topic on MR brings up a point about fluffys

BleedingSun
there needs to be fluffies. without fluffies; there wont be teachers to teach the other bach of fluffies.

Do you think we need fluffys? What do you personally believe a fluffy to be?

In the way bleedingsun said, i think he means newbies... and if that is the case, then i agree.. but if its in the case of complete idiots, then do we really NEED fluffys?

think of it like this, if we need fluffys to have teachers, what if the teacher is wrong? Then, all the fluffys will be even more fluffy but because of that, they will think they are right, causing them to teach other fluffys, and it goes on and on. In which case, what is the problem? Fluffys? or bogus teachers?

Which also brings up the point, do we need teachers? if people were to find things and learn on their own, (after alot of time, not just jumping to the first thing they see of coarse) then wont they find what would be the right thing, and not just what someone else is superimposing? but, that also brings up the point that loads of people will all have a different point of view, causing more augments, and then, because a few people all found the same stuff, trying to single out people who finds something different, causing the term fluffy to be placed upon the minority, and then the majority trying to teach the others what they think is right, starting the whole cycle again. (which is probably how christianity got so major)

If there was no fluffys, there would be no need for teachers. if there was no teachers, there would be no fluffys to teach.

who is to blame?

so there's my little philosophical debate.. discuss..

This IS interesting. eek

Well...I see a fluffy as a person who is so set in their ways that they won't listen to other's views. Generally, a fluffy's mindset is either focused solely on the light and the good, ignoring the existence of negativity, or they are convinced they're out demon hunting daily. If someone is very well-informed, yet set in their ways, they're not included--there has to be a general air of ignorance in the mix.

Going by my definition, true fluffies wouldn't even LISTEN to teachers, unless those teachers had the same mindset they did and then, by this definition, would be fluffies as well.

I do think teachers are very vital. However, teachers aren't restricted to the classroom, or to formal teaching. I consider books teachers, I consider you guys teachers, I consider the earth a teacher.

I do not believe we need fluffies at all. Of course, that's by my definitions...if a fluffy is basically a 'n00b', then we don't necessarily need them but they are a great thing.

Greg Stolze & John Tynes

Every earnest young punk has a theory about how magick works and why it takes the form it has, but there's no professor to grade the papers. No one knows nothing dead sure.

If magick were an academic, scholarly subject, there would be significantly less fluffies -- I'd say 'no fluffies', but I'm sure there's at least one person you can think of who thinks he can point out flaws in science. Fluffies exist purely because magick cannot be defined, tested, analysed, measured, e.t.c. This makes any person's theory about magick just as valid as anyone else's.

I'll say that in more explicit and offensive terms: Wings of Aegis, Lobo_23, Joshua_Ritter, [BlkCat], Sinesthera, PsycheLapis, BleedingSun, Atomisk Prime, Sengem Barom and I all have theories about magick and psionics that are equally valid as one another.

So what the hoc-est-corpus sets us apart from one another? How do we decide who's fluffy and who's not? Personally, I go by two measurements -- how much the person knows about magick and psionics in general (how much research they've done about pre-existing systems), and how intelligent they seem to be. If they seem to know their s**t in some respects, and have a coherent system going, I'll give them respect. If they can string sentences together, and have a firm grip on reasoning and/or logic, then I'll respect them that much more.

If they haven't done any research whatsoever, and they don't seem capable of coherent thinking, then I doubt very much they can create or utilise a magickal system. It's my belief that that's where fluffies come from - folk who don't research s**t, and don't really try to make proper sense of what's going on.

As for wether they're necessary... I think they are, but only in the (rather elitist) sense that without them, we'd be a less coherent guild. But by that reasoning, you could say 9/11 was necessary. So no, they're not.

Phew.

EDIT: I'd factor in what Kizzy said regarding a fluffy's tendancy to a) not listen, and b) side with "good" or "evil" in a very Neo-Manichaeist fashion. I'd consider them typical symptoms of fluffidom rather than something that causes them, though. That's just my theory, though. XD

Lobo is now sad. neutral

But... I don't think that BleedingSun/TheTrueWingMaker really meant "Fluffies" I think he meant newbies... because a fluffy is someone who has fall-through-able beliefs, or nothing to back up their claims with. He also considers himself a fluffy and that's kind of weird... confused

i would think that fluffys are people who are inexperianced or otherwise noobs..
this is a pretty good subject to think on. i believe we need to have fluffys in the world because without fluffys there would be nobody to make examples of to help teach.

******** Flufflies.

We don't need them at all. We should know with or without them what is believeable and what isn't. If you don't, then I guess you're a fluffy. Regardless, whether we want them or not, we have them always. They will always exsist as long as people think that outrageous s**t like blowing your friend away with a supercharged DBZball is possible.

Kizzy ish pwned. gonk

Yes, I agree--they're definitely symptoms and don't cause them. I'm just highly sleep-deprived and can barely walk without falling over due to diziness at the moment. So thank you for making sense of my nonsense! heart

I like to differentiate between the newbs and the n00bs. Fluffies, in my eyes, are n00bs. So I don't believe that we need fluffies, since there are always newbies who are willing to learn.

A fluffy, as I see it, is a person who couples ignorance with arrogance. They usually get all their ideas from one source (i.e., their own experiences, or that of a fluffy teacher, an anime, or that of a badly-written book), or even no source--some just make things up based on a few things they've heard.

Fluffies usually spread misinformation--usually things which are half or partially true, or things taken out of context.

Here's an exchange I had with someone when I first started my guild:

"I'm a demon! But not all demons are bad. In fact, I kill the bad ones all the time which on the astral plane. In fact, I killed a dozen while I was in math class."

"I thought that the word 'demon' is a bad spirit by definition in our culture...so if you're good, wouldn't you call yourself something else?"

"What?! That's your problem. You're too literal; you don't know anything! Demons are fallen angels, duh."

"Oh, so you're a fallen angel, then. How come you're 12?"

"My spirit is actually 98274872354 years old, but I'm in this body because I'm supposed to save the world."

"Oh. Well...in the Bible, angels who fell had physical bodies, and weren't reborn. In Enoch, God was so angry with them, He condemned them to oblivion once the world ends."

"The Bible is wrong. Everyone knows that it's inconsistent."

"Okay. Well in some of the other books I read, fallen angels and true demons are extremely rare, and they're extremely hard to destroy. All the modern teachers across the globe say the same thing."

"Well they don't know what they're talking about. Only I do. You get your information from books?! Ha!"

"But...my experiences match up with what they're saying, so I think there's something to it. Also, the experiences of other people who are advanced..."

"Well you and your friends suck. I'm light years ahead of you and I know better. GRAH ANGRY RANT"

It's like that, only with much worse spelling and grammar. Also, it's normally a lot less civilized. gonk

Oh, God, how'd you get that so right, I wanted to punch your example in it's fictional face. ;_;

But yeah. I really like this and am gonna go with ignorance coupled with arrogance and self righteousness. They close their minds, and refuse to grow. At any point that's an intellectual death sentence, but when you know nothing and think you know something/everything, you're doubly ignorant. Socrates, anyone?

But yeah. Chaos magic and all that, I don't deny the possibility of anything, only the probability and the assholishness of people. I also like to be a skeptic at people, because it's good to be able to let go of what you believe. The people who need their beliefs as a mental crutch are the most likely to make up and pay attention to what supports it. Those who just notice and have things happen whether or not they want them to seem the most likely candidates to be telling the truth.

Oh yeah, do we need them. I don't think we need them persay, but they will probably stick around because they are trying to take the easy way out of developing. I mean, we don't need teachers, but it's an easier way to pass on a lot of knowledge and expertise without finding it out for yourself. So yeah. Don't need them but will probably have them forever.
