It was really sad, but i don't think he died in vein. Because of his death, Roy became more determand than ever to achieve his goals.

I think he should've gotten more screentime before he died, but he should have died. D: Don't get me wrong; I love that guy, but....really. Isn't everyone a bit tired of series where NO ONE ever dies? (villains don't count)
And, like Orgo said, it became a further incentive for Roy.
But yes, I agree. It was so terribly sad when Elycia/Alishia/Alicia/his kid (xD;; wink started to cry. ;_;

i wish that they wouldnt have killed off Hughes in the series but they probably did because that was one more thing that fueled ed t go after the humonculus

I understand why they decided to kill him (nooooo!!! crying ) and though I was terribly depressed I think he should have died...
but I wouldn't be saying that if he had lived.... (never coming backkk!!! crying )

I thought it was sad crying ... but if he hadn't died, the secret that he was about to tell would have gotten out and there wouldn't be any mystery in what he found out and the series would be shorter and less interesting.

I was extremely sad when Maes died. His funeral scene was probably one of the most tear-jerking scenes in the whole show. But as much as I love Huges, it was important to the plot that he died...which sucks.

A lot came out of Maes' death. The Homunculi got rid of someone who knew too much but his friends were more determined to find out why he was killed.

I was so sad, when he was being put to rest. Elysia cring was so sad to.

sadly i didn't cry when he died, though i almost did, and i was shocked. like they said in the commentary, you think it's like a fake thing and he'll just be alive or something in a few minutes but he just never came back and it stunned me. then a few disks later is when he got me, when winry first learns about it and she's looking at the old pics of him and roy and his medas and stuff. i bawled my eyes out during that.
of course elisya didn't help. "mommy! daddy has work to do! daddy wake up!" crying crying crying crying
