I went to the State fair Saturday, and took tons of photos. I'll post some of my favorites here.

I'm very happy--the camera I upgraded to on Thanksgiving weekend last year really did a great job. It even has a special setting for fireworks! These are the best fair shots I have ever taken. If I succeed in putting together the shots of my favorite trailer rides, I'll post one or two of those as well. There were about 3 or 4 really well-done hand-painted trailer rides (as opposed to being airbrushed and/or crudely done with little talent). If you go to the fair, look for the Lucky Lizzie, the Monkey Maze and the Haunted Mansion. They all have murals with a lot of funny detail. There are also a couple of amusing-looking German Funhouses and two versions of the Mardis Gras ride, one more risque than the other. Yup, I love fairground art! It's a dying art. I actually saw one ride that had PHOTOGRAPHIC images on its panels, like it was designed all cut & paste on a computer & then made into a covering for the boards! cry ICKY!

I heard there were record crowds of around 140,000 at the State Fair on the last Saturday. My friend went back again that day & she said the crowds were so big they just packed the fairgrounds and you could barely move in any direction! eek Sure glad we went on the first Saturday!

GREAT PICS! What camera did you use, Eirwyn? I'm in the market for a digital camera which isn't too bulky and can zoom a little (6x-12x). biggrin

I got a Kodak EasyShare C703, with 7.1 MP. It has a bunch of specialty modes on the "SCN" setting, like backlit portraits, fireworks, night shots & so on. It takes a little doing to learn, but the software is easy to use & downloading to my computer is a snap. My parents have a Fuji, which was my first choice (but I saw this great sale after Thanksgiving last year...). It has a nice, clear screen on the back for looking at the shots. I think theirs is around 5 MP--don't know the model. I've heard other people say good things about Fuji cameras also.
I also got a 1GB SD memory card last year, so I can take jillions of shots without worrying about running out of room.

smile I've heard people say NC has one of the best State Fairs in the country, but they're mostly talking about how good it is, not its size. They say we have a nicer, friendlier crowd, not too many gang-types & so on as yet. This is the only State Fair I've ever been to. I grew up in Indiana, but I never got to go to anything but the local county fair when I was a kid, so I don't know anything about the Indiana State Fair.
