A Wandering Esper

Beloved Stargazer

It just seemed like it had been so long since he had be able to enjoy some time on his own - of course he still dropped at the arcade, but that was about it. He hadn't even seen any other fa'e in ages now. Taking care of an infant sure ate away all your time, but Zero had said that it was normal.

So he found himself taking his favorite relaxing spot - an old swing way back in the propriety that it seemed only a few remembered that it existed anymore, swinging slowly and listening to the old chain creak, bare feet brushing the tall grass. The tree where starting to show some color, and a few leaves came off now and then, pushed by the wind.

It was awkward to think that he was two years old. Of course, no one would think that by looking at him, but still for some reason he felt... old. Maybe it was because he always had things running across his mind. The blonde boy gave a soft sigh as he stared up at the starry sky.

Twinkling lights. The stars and their eternal promise of beauty shine overhead. An innocent sight for many, but a source of heartbreak for others. There is the reminder of family, like a photo on a desk. They remind but cannot replace the individuals. An empty elegance, the dreams that they inspire hollow and fading the moment one looks away.

It wasn't meant to be this way. The stars are windows to the truth, to the soul. They shouldn't bring about grief, but revelation.

Perhaps they intend to make up for this lapse in their purpose, for one is shining all the brighter now that Sei is looking up. Notice me, it seems to beckon, twinkling with a repeating pattern to push back the inky darkness of both sky and depression. Notice me.

The moon is out tonight, yet it's glow seem dim when compared to the efforts of that single star.

It was the moon that held his attention first of all, but soon a twinkle to the side of his vision distracted him. That star... It shone so much brighter than the rest. A supernova ? ...Yet something in the back of his mind told him otherwise.

He let go of the swing and walked a few steps, neither caring nor feeling that the grass was slightly wet. It would be that movement that would let any onlooker know he had noticed it, for his gaze always seemed to stare blankly without any focus.

It didn't only glow, it gave a twinkle. ...A twinkle that had a repetitive pattern, he eventually noticed. How odd.

Notice me ... Stay with me ... Blinking to keep the child's attention, though unable to communicate beyond those flickerings, the star pulses brighter. It's death is near. It knows this. Yet it must give it's message somehow. The charge given must be fulfilled.

Yes, keep walking this way ... She comes ...

The ethereally white wings with their gray spots make little sound, the large owl-like feathers buffeting the air as a leanly muscled, tall and pale woman touches her booted feet upon the ground. The long braid swings behind her, her white skirt settling about her dancer's legs as she straightens. Dark blue ringed sapphire eyes regard Sei's back, gloved hands kept at the regal sides as the form seems to just be absorbing the sight before her with longing and uncertainty in those soulful orbs. When she speaks, it's in a soft murmur. Barely there, though each syllable rings with the crystal clarity of memorized pronunciation.

"Sei ..."

The young boy walked a few more steps before he stopped, head tilting to one side as if trying to understand exactly what that odd star was doing, yet he couldn't find a single perfect, logical and scientific reason. Odd for him, now, to forget that not all things are logical and scientific, after two years, but it happened every now and then.

His ears suddenly twitched as sound hit them, not quite sure what had been said, yet sure he had heard something other than the wind. He turned, then stared. In the dark, he couldn't make out the person all that much. The wings... ...Wait, wing...

"...Mother ?"

Relief that he recognizes her, even with little light for his eyes to see, brings a smile to rosy lips. She's trying not to cry, as he doesn't need to see that. Not now, not when she's taking in how much he's grown.

"Yes, Sei ... It's me."

As she did when she first saw him as a toddler, she kneels down, not caring that her one rolled down boot makes her knee bare to the bite of the sand and pebbles below. Her arms open, slowly, and are kept open. She's praying, praying that he will come to her, even after all this time. She wants to hold him so very badly, but to go to him and force that on him ... No.

"I've missed you so."

He looks so much like his father in this light. Paler, true, but his build resembles that of the starry skinned fa'e in her eyes. The gentle glow of the moonlight is perfect for her eyes to adapt to, every detail of her son taken in as a treasure she will retain even if he does not accept her back into his life. The loss of her old self, the piece of her soul that gave her beloved prince life, will ever be worth the cost, no matter what happens to her.

He stood perfectly still for a moment, trying to will his mouth to stay closed as he was overcome with surprise and shock, and also by two very conflicting emotions. One of anger - why did you leave, why not tell me face to face instead of leaving me a note, why didn't you just take me with you and spare me all the worry ?!? The other was just a overwhelming feeling of gladness that it was finally all over, maybe.

Eventually the second won over any irritation that he may have had and he ran, the fastest he could, and about threw himself in the angel's open arms, remaining silent for the moment just in case the anger would return while he was trying to lock it inside just as he used to lock in everything else.

His anger slaps the angel across her heart, and for a moment she flinches, though her arms remain steady and held out for him. Fear works it's way into her thoughts, fear that her son will choose to turn around and just ... go. The thought had been hovering on the edge of her mind for so long these past months, that if it were to happen now, she wouldn't be shocked. Devastated, but not shocked.

Then comes the surge of happiness, and her tears overcome her self control, spilling over her cheeks and dappling the leather of her bodice. Her wings snap out to aid in her being braced for his charge, her arms enfolding him as she buries her face in his hair. That anger still simmers, but it's being dulled by the second. No, she won't let him cage himself. Not for her. Not for anyone.

Black leather touches the back of his head as her gloved fingers stroke at his hair, cradling him to her. "I could not bring you with me, Sei." A brief pause for breath, and then, "You were still too young, too attached to your guardian. It would have weakened you, possibly killed you, and I will never be the one to do so."

Her torment at leaving him behind further fuels her tears, her embrace becoming tighter, as if afraid he'll disappear, cease to exist before she can offer up what she'd discovered. "I cannot ask for your forgiveness. I had to go. I had to find your father. It's hard to explain, but without him, I ... I fade." Soft lips kiss the even softer hair.

Confusion became proeminent now. How did she know, how had she guessed ? Was it this obivious on his face ? Quick, straighten up !

He pulled the long sleeve of his shirt over to his hand, using that to raise up and dry what he could of the angel's tears. "...I know that, I know all that. Yet I can't help myself. It's not your fault, mom... It's mine, really. I shouldn't feel that way."

He just hoped that the words "too young" would stop following him eventually. Slowly, a smile formed itself on his face. "There's no need to ask for something that's already been given, isn't it ?"

After all, he should be glad. She was trying to fill the hole in his family after all. He was just being silly.

He means it. The confusion, the acceptance, the self-admonishment, she feels them all and wishes she could take away the negative emotions. Technically, she could, but what good would that do for him? He wouldn't learn or grow.

The brush of his sleeve as he wipes away her tears makes her smile, a hand tenderly touching his cheek even as he dries hers. The tears keep coming. She just can't seem to stop crying, though now her immediate worry is appeased. "There is no one to blame, dear one. I have had to accept this, as well. You are right to feel as you do, for I did leave you little notice. I should have waited till you woke up and told you in person. My lack of foresight humbles me."

She should tell him. The star high above is still guttering in and out, hanging on to what time it has left, trying to relate the meaning that Shina could reveal with a few choice words.

"I found him, Sei."

]Again, he felt silent for a moment. Of course it made sense - she had said she wasn't returning without him. Yet... Where was he, then ? He couldn't help being curious - after all, Hoshi was his father, even if he had never seen him - and all that time, Sei had waited, patiently - to learn of the reason so he could decide what he thought about this whole thing accordingly.

"Where was he... ?" It was all he said.

"Trapped," is her immediate response, eyes meeting his to gaze ever deeply into them. "Kept from us by beings tied to him. He told me he would follow after me, in a short time."

She tries for a brave little smile and gets it at least partly right. "He will come back to us, Sei. I know he will. See? He gave me this, to give to you."

One hand reluctantly leaves her son's cheek to slip into a small pouch that is clipped to the bodice of her outfit, drawing out something that catches the smallest ray of moonlight and gleams silver.

Sei was, again, silent for a moment as he mulled things over, and interpreted the information he had just been given. It was just so hard not to be detached from all this... to the man that was his father, yet but a stranger in his own mind. Knowing full well now that his mother somehow could tell his feelings or his thoughts (he was not sure which right now), he couldn't stifle that small amount of guilt that arose. He was supposed to react in a way, yet... he just felt oddly disconnected from the whole situation.

He caught the ring in between two fingers and observed it, if only as an excuse to avoid his mother's gaze. There was always this.. this fear.

It never left.

"I hope he's going to be okay." He finally managed.

Both hands go to cup the one that is holding up the ring, closing gently about the smaller appendage. This serves to further prove to Shina that her Sei is still yet small enough for her to mother. It had been her greatest, and most selfish, fear that when she returned he would be an adult ... and want nothing to do with her.

"He will be." Soft words for a hurting heart. Her braid shifts as her wings sweep forward, enfolding Sei in their feathery embrace as she rests her forehead against his. "It is not my right, even as your mother, to ask you to feel for him, Sei. He has not played a role in your life. It is ultimately up to you how you wish to know your father. I will not force that upon you."

There is a hint of a howl, pitched from a far distance, and the half fa'e smiles to herself. "Ruathal wishes to greet you." Of course her companion, her tae, went with her, and is now returned alongside his friend. The glittering blue marks upon cheekfur and forelegs seem as tiny stars as the tae dive bombs mother and child, likely whooshing right over their heads with a soft ruffing of amusement and joy at both seeing Sei once more and his bond so happy.

"I want to meet him." That much was true, the angel would know, as it resonated deep within his soul. "I do want to... But... I just feel so detached from all this." He frowned a tiny bit, forehead still resting against his mother. For one who was mostly unused of displaying emotion, being able to be read like an open book was awkward. He was not mad, just... it felt weird. He had grown to be able to hide almost anything from almost anyone, but no matter how wide a smile he could put on his face, his mother would always know if he was hiding pain behind a mask. "I think I will need to meet him, see him, talk to him, before I know what to do with all this." He admitted, hoping this would not upset the angel further. The fear... the fear would not leave, he tried to forget about it, yet he could not. I doubt I am the child she wanted to have, we are so different, after all.

The traitorous thought was finally locked inside (hopefully before the angel had a chance to catch it) as he perked and tilted his head in direction of the howl, head free yet still in his mother's embrace. "Ruathal... I remember him, I think."

Oddly the child gave no reaction as the creature hovered right over them - as if he had not felt the wind move...
