Alas, curiosity killed the Slytherin again, so it seems. I was wondering something at school today and wanted to know if other members have ever done this as well, or if I'm just being a big fanatic yet again. So here it goes.

Most of you probably don't know, but I'm actually Bilangual, which makes me fluent in both of Canada's official languages ( French and English). Anyway, in my French class, I decided to make my life that much easier by re-reading Half-Blood Prince. However, this time, it's in French.

To my surprise, I noticed that the French volume contained an extra 100 pages ( mind you, without the images) and that they had changed many of the names in the book. It got me disoriented.

So here's the discussion. I would like to know if anyone else has read Harry Potter in another language and what did you think of them. If you have not read any other copy other than the English one, feel free to join the conversation anyway. Come share your opinions on the subjet.

Several names. Snape is reffered to Rogue in the french one, Muggles are called Moldus ( I think) and so on. I also find the translation of some of the words kinda weird since I am so used to the English version. Like for me, it's hard to say He-Who-Must-Not-be-Named in french ( it translates to Celui-Dont-On-Ne-Peut-Pas-Mentionner-De-Nom ). It's just weird. gonk

That's really interesting Garnet! The name is soo long....ehh that is hard to pronounce since I don't know french, but anyways, I'm also a bilingual but with spanish (ehh I'm Mexican razz ) anyways once in Target, I was really bored and in the book department, when I saw Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in Spanish! I was surprised and I looked at it and skimmed the first few pages, the names were different and just how everything was translated was spanish was really funny..don't ask sweatdrop So hopefully one of these days, when I'm not so busy, I will try to read it in Spanish.

That would be interesting I guess. I'm learning french at the moment and our teacher is really strange, she always puts this bee pollen stuff in her mouth. O.o

I have both PoA and GoF in Japanese, but I haven't gotten far enough in either of them to say what's been changed. However, here's an interesting site that talked about the changes made in the Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese translations. It's really interesting seeing how they change the wordplays and also reading about the way Dumbledore speaks in Japanese. It also has mistranslations.

I've read five of the books in Norwegian.

...Not recommended.

They've translated pretty much all of the names. Dumbledore is "Humlesnurr", Black is "Svaart", Riddle has been turned into "Venster", Lestrange had been turned to "DeMont", Weasley is suddently called "Wiltersen" and Malfoy has gone "Malfang"! I'm not even going in on all the other obscene names!

Not to mention that when it got translated... I can't help but find it... How to say it? A little childish. I don't know, but I find Norwegian to be a slightly childish language.
