I just finished reading the article about the race. I wouldn't mind driving a solar car. The article mentions that experts don't think a solar car will ever go on sale to the masses.

(reason: When will I be able to buy one? Probably never, was the standard answer the students gave when they showed off their wheels at several stops along the race route. A standard car with all its modern comforts, and thus power needs, would require many times more cells than could be attached to its body. quote from the article)

I wouldn't mind driving a car that doesn't have a radio, air conditioning, or whatever else are in cars now a days. As long as it takes me to my desired destination, and I can use the roadways. It's harder to just say that I am going to ride a bicycle everywhere, because I wouldn't be able to use most of the roadways, and it wouldn't be safe to travel after dark.

I am not sure if I could give up the air conditioning. It has been a very warm summer in St. Louis this year, with many days of 100 degrees or more high temperatures. (and those liars say global warming is really happening.) I could deal with the sweating for myself, but I have a 10 yr old girl, who is, shall we say, kinda high maintenance. She is an ice skater and has become accustomed to colder temperatures. I don't think I could put up with the whining. rolleyes

This does feel like a hotter summer than last year. Everything down here is sticky. And that heat wave that is hitting the country is not helping. The only reason Florida isn't suffering like some more northern states is because of the ocean breezes we get. It cools off the land.
Many people argue that global warming is a natural occurance, and that the earth goes throught changes in global temperatures. I am not sure what to believe anymore. It sounds likely that global warming IS a natural occurance, since the earth has had drastic climatic changes before (like the Ice Ages), but I think that green house gases can be speeding it up as well. We still need to find cleaner transit.

The answer is that we first nmust use existing methods of pollution reduction. You know the Japanese went from the most the laxest pollution standards in the 60's to some of the worlds toughest by the 90's. They actually use strict car emissions standards to keep out low price competition allowing their car companies greater profits, it is a little anti-competitive yes, but face it on an island that crowded they need all the pollution reduction they can get. But the american auto industry is horribly inbred and backwards. Consumers must force the change, the issue isn;t whether the car is american or not as many japanese cars are made in the USA but whether you should buy an inefficient Ford SUV or a Toyota prius. If you make several little cheap steps it can add up big time. I would also like to announce I am about to give up my car, a bueatiful 1980 Chrysler Cordoba, while it still easily meets emission standards I can;t justify its 12 mpg city mileage nor even having it any longer. Its a drain on my pocket book just having it in the parking lot, so I will probably travel 30 or so miles to work by bicycle and mass transit, wish me luck next week in my experiment.

I have a teacher that rides a skateboard and the bus.
He has no car.
He manages to live, I think we can learn from him.

Once I have the money, I really want to get a hybrid car. The Prius has been recalled though, something about stalling out on the freeways... sweatdrop

And seeing as I've always bought really cheap old used cars, I'm pretty much okay with not having the add-ons like air conditioning or a radio that actually works. Heat is important for defrost, but for air conditioning, I can just roll down the windows, although I really do like cold weather better than heat. And my car at school doesn't have a radio, so I'm just going to hook my MP3 player, which picks up radio signals, to some a speaker I got for Christmas last year, and voila! music!

I love my smaller cars that get good gas mileage though. There are a lot of people at school that drive trucks for no apparent reason. I have a big truck, because my lifestyle requires it's use for hauling things on occasion, but I drive my little Escort around most of the time.

Some US cities are putting down more emissions restrictions, I know that Portland, OR is. And with the recent spikes in gas prices, more fuel efficient cars are probably going to be in high demand, which will be good for the environment. I would love to go without a car, but living in a rural area means no mass transit, and things are too spread out for a bike to be convenient, especially when you have limited time between activities. I started school without a car, but finally gave in and bought a used car with a close friend of mine. I'm very independent, and couldn't stand depending on people for rides out to the barn every day and I usually only had about 10 minutes between classes, so riding a bike wouldn't have been possible. sad

Whenever I go camping with my family one of the first things we do is scout out a place to set up our solar pannels and we charge everything for the trip through them. It's fun. smile
