ok so I was bored the other day so I started looking through some of the gaian forums and came across one about wicca I was reading it and several Wiccans were posting and talking to this younger girl who wanted to become wiccan and telling her it was only a fertility religion...as far as I know there is a branch of Wicca like that but when I said something about the more nature based side of wicca they all started gaging up on me and saying i was wrong. now i'm pretty sure i'm not compleatly wrong because i have been studying awhile. I really would like someone's opinion on this if I'm wrong...or not.

wicca is nature based, yes thats a part of it, but not the whole, it's not just about having sex and bearing children, its about getting to know your self more and being more in tunned with nature, its about celebereating the world around you

thank you for that that's what i was tought and have learned on my own that it was about being in tune with nature and well what you said it just was a bit uncomfterable to have several people tell me plain and simple i was wrong. I do know that there are other spins on the religion but that's true with most religions isn't it. so like i said thanks for your help. ^_^

When you get down to Gardner's original writings, Wicca is a fertility cult. It's a celebration of life, and life would not be without fertility.

AHH! People like that irritate me! They think their way is the "only way". You see it in Christianity, you see it pretty much everywhere. There are different sects in Wicca, and pretty much every religion. Just as you have baptists, you have catholics, and Presbyterians. In Wicca, you have Dianic Wicca, Seax-Wicca, and the list goes on. Different ways of worship and belief. Yes, Wicca celebrates fertility, but that's not the only thing it celebrates. It celebrates nature. Paganism, hello? Gah. You're very right. They we're wrong to tell you what you think isn't true. It just shows their ignorance. They can believe what they want, but everyone else doesn't have to believe it also.
Sorry for the rant. lol sweatdrop

um, it's part of it but not as a whole.
i do believe though, that you arn't allowed to be initiated into a coven until age 18, but ut's not soley about fertility,
it's about nature, respecting it and all other living things on this earth. It's about life and celebrating it. It's about tapping into your inner self.
there are many definitions of it.

In all honestly, I believe people should know how Wicca is followed as a lineage based religion. Not follow, necessarily - but just know how it started. It's the trunk of the tree of Wicca. Listen to those people, they know their stuff, but don't let them beat you down. It's your choice what to believe and how to worship.

umm.. thanks for answering my question.i think maybe it just bugged me that they told me my time i had spent studying was a compleat waste. umm..and one quick question umm morbid dolie you said that you had to be 18 to be initiated but here the covens i have found and know exsit through friends they let you be initiated at the age of 14. i have not been initiated mostly because as much as the religion is what i chose my parents aren't very supportive of it while i'm still a "Child" but have given me they're encouragement finally that when i turn 18 they won't try to stop me...not that i would care much. but is there a reason for them to accept younger mebers here? maybe how they practice the religion? i was just intrested in learning why there was a difrence.

I don't see why you have to be 18 to be initiated into a coven. There are many covens that let you in around the age of 13, etc. Such as family covens where everyone knows you, and covens created by teens. Of course, there are a lot of covens that have age limits, they probably believe that when you're 18 you'll 'truly' know what you want and you'll have more freedom to pursue it.

My opinion of those girls is that they were just saying it because they are sex addicts and believe Wicca is a way to go about getting what they want, if they kept telling you that Wicca was a fertility religion and that you studying was a waste. Like I said it's my opinion sorry if I offended anyone.
As for covens I agree that certain ones do have age limits due to the fact that some may contain sexuality or the like. But others don't have age limits because they don't want to ward off anyone who is willing to learn Wicca and or Paganism.

Let me say Wicca is a "fertility" religion in that we celebrate the cycles of growth, death and rebirth within nature. This is based on the fertility of the earth, not necessarily the "fertility" of women. The sabbat cycle reflects the impregnation of the earth, birth, growth, waning and death of everything in nature.
As for the age that you can be admitted to a coven, that varies by Tradition. However a lot of covens are constrained by local laws. Here in my state it is illegal to admit a minor to any religion without parental consent. Therefore the age requirement for my coven is 18 or older, unless their parent is a coven member or I can meet with the parents and obtain their permission. That has only happened once in the entire time I've been practicing the Craft.

maybe not all of them are eighteen but some of the big ones in my area won't accept unless your eighteen, or unless you were raised in a wiccan family and a reletive is also in the coven.

An' ye harm none, do what ye will... Wicca is not a Fertility Religion. it is a nature based religion, open to all, and respects nature and harms none. ~Blessed Be~

So what if it is a fertility religion? That doesn't really matter, at least not to me.

I agree that this discussion is without basis. Who cares if Wicca is a fertility religion? Does that take anything away from Wicca? Is that upsetting, and if it is, to who? The wastelands?
Really, I would think that being a part of a Fertility religion would be a plus, not a minus.
