If someone asked Kalvin what gryphon droppings smelled like, and to no surprise no one ever had—but if they did ask, Kalvin would say it smelled bad. That was probably all they wanted to hear. But if they really wanted the juicy details, Kalvin would tell them that it smelled like very strong dog droppings. Actually it was more like gigantic very strong dog droppings but, to Kalvin, having the words ‘gigantic’ and ‘droppings’ in the same sentence seemed a lot like cursing. The point was they stank. And at the end of every day, Kalvin smelled like a sweaty boy who had had his boots in huge piles of gigantic very strong dog droppings.

Kalvin had stopped wondering where Mark had gone hours ago. Mark Thompson, the new stable boy, was supposed to help him today. Mark was older than Kalvin, but Kalvin felt infuriated with him because he had never seen Mark do a shred of real work aside from flinging dirty straw around like party favors. When his boss came by to look at the stables, Kalvin hoped he could get him fired.

While the races went on Kalvin remained in the stables, raking out the poo and urine stained bedding and laying down fresh straw for the racing gryphons. He was an able bodied boy, short for his age but able to handle the weight of shoving away 50lbs of gryphon poo every week. His apron had not looked clean for two years. On his hands and knees, he cut open fresh bails of straw and spread the material evenly through each stable, padding it down so it was nice and soft. Dust collected in his curly brown hair. It never made him sneeze. Using both hands, he carried heavy buckets of water to fill the troughs anew. His hands looked borrowed from a sailor and every visible inch of skin was covered in varying degrees of scratches and filth. The focused look in his eyes was uncharacteristic of a boy of 14.

The crowd roared to life as the race ended in a flurry of feathers and colors. With the winners proclaimed and the loosers dismissed as second-best, there was no debate of who had come out on top.

A bright red and white griffin with a plume on his head like a cockatiel had won a length ahead of the competition, followed by a noble's son on his golden stead, and a teal beauty placing third.

Laura was seventh of the twenty or so racers in one of the bigger races of the year.

There was no prize money, no income, no glory from this race for the peasant woman and her faithful partner. Despite all the training, Leolin's injuries from the shindig had come back to haunt the pair. It was the best they could do to place in the top ten, but Laura praised Leolin all the same as she sat between the griffin's aching wings.

Sliding off Leolin's back carefully, Laura stroked her partner's scruffy mane as they headed towards the stables for a rest. Leolin could still rest and refresh himself before the walk of shame back home.

The weight of defeat wasn't easily remedied with sweet words as easily as that. Knowing Laura ment to help boost his confidence, Leolin knew he'd let his partner down. With Kedri and his young chicks hatching, he hadn't been able to get his head into the race as he normally did.

His head sagged as he walked into the stable along side Laura, staring at the straw laden floor as he was led back to his open stall.

"We'll just have to try a little harder next time..." Laura cooed softly as she brought Leolin to rest in his stall. Seating herself beside him to stroke the griffin.

Leolin drank from his trough, only half listening to what she said.

After washing his hands in the basin for the stable boys Kalvin returned to the stables, where he saw a trashing tail sticking out of one of the stocks. Without giving it any thought, he picked up the brush from the rack and headed over. He glanced at some of the other stalls on the way and sighed. What kind of family did Mark come from that would let him be so lazy? As he turned into the stable he paused and gave the gryphon a thorough looking over, eyes widening. “Leolin?”

Looking up at the inquiring voice, Laura too was struck by surprise. "Kalvin, what're you doing here?!" She asked at once. "I thought you were still at that backwater stable near the edge of the city!" True, it wasn't very nice to call it that, but she'd worked there as well and it certainly felt like it wasn't worth the miniscule wages she got.

"Cleaning griffin stalls now are you?"

The griffin gulped the water in his mouth before turning to blink his large green eyes at Kalvin. A familiar face here of all places! Getting up from his seat beside Laura, the griffin trilled as he stepped up to Kalvin.

Giving his own form of greeting, the tawny griffin pushed his head against the boy's chest in greeting before the bird began preening Kalvin's hair.

Kalvin brushed his hand through Leolin’s mane with an enormous grin. He could almost cry, but laughed instead. “I missed you too, boy. Not pulling manure anymore, are you?” Stretching up his arm, he scratched Leolin behind the ears as he began preening his curly hair. He almost forgot about Lucas.

“I told the manager here about my mother,” he said when Leolin had finished grooming. He kept his hand on Leolin’s neck for comfort, buried in the warm feathers. He had been trying not to think about her and dodged Lucas's face when he spoke. “We really needed the money, so he let me work.”

Chirping quietly, Leolin's dulldrums seemed to be forgotten at the familiar face. At least, for the moment, suppressed. It was never fun to see someone again after a long time only to be sullen.

The griffin nuzzled the lad's face, making sure not to lean too much of his weight against Kalvin.

"Oh... How's she doing?" Laura asked quietly before resting a hand on her knee and pushing herself to stand up. With Leolin's happy reuinion far be it from Laura to break that up.

Forcing a smile on her face, she rested a hand at her hip and gave a gruff laugh. "You'll end up with a cow lick like last time if you don't shoo him off."

Kalvin let himself be Leolin’s cuddle toy and stood there like a rag doll as he pushed him around. Until now no one had given him the attention he longed for, and yet it was bitter too. His eyes started to well up. “Not so good. She died about two months ago.” He whipped his face with the back of his hand, glad he’d cleaned them. “The manager still lets me work. I’m doing alright. Got food, blankets, and the house is mine now.” He shrugged listlessly. No matter the weather, the walls in his mother’s house were always cold.

The smile shriveled up, fell off, and ran yelping like a kicked puppy out the door.

"Kalvin, I'm so sorry..." She murmured sympathetically. Her parents were enjoying the benefits of having a knight in the family; despite the fact she rarely saw them, she couldn't imagine what would happen without them.

Standing up on his own, the griffin backed up a pace to look Kalvin in the eyes. He was leaking... Humans only did that when they were really sad. His partner didn't stop leaking for weeks after her grandmother died.

Well... one thing worked when Laura was upset. Chirpping, the griffin turned his head sideways before fluffing his mane cutely. Staring at the young lad expectantly, Leolin hoped the lad would at least smile for him.

One side of Kalvin’s face twitched. It was as close as he was going to get to a smile thinking about his mother. She had always been different from other mothers; she could not cook his meals or tuck him in at night most of the time and when she smiled it was often through a curtain of pain, but even though she couldn’t do much for herself, now that she was gone he felt more afraid for himself and lonely than ever before. He tried to change the subject, glancing at Lucas. “How did you become a racer?”

The mane of feathers went down, and Leolin dismally went to preening Kalvin once again. The poor boy wasn't feeling anything but sadness. That was all Leolin needed to know in order to try and help an old friend feel better.

"Well... I met a Lord who promised to finance Leolin's racing." Laura said truthfully, allowing Leolin to deal with the comforting that would be awkward for her to while under the guise of a boy herself.

With a soft scoff, she smiled sheepishly. "I know I used to talk about how I'd make Leolin a great racer... I couldn't believe I could get to race him in this! The qualifying race was frightening enough..."

Kalvin gently pushed Leolin away, rubbing the gryphon’s head in consolidation. He needed to be a little considerate of his looks and the beak nipping at his hair was starting to get annoying, not that he was opposed to cuddling. “That’s amazing,” he tried to smile for Lucas. “Who is he?”

Lords were all the same to Kalvin. The name didn’t matter, he just wanted Lucas to keep talking.

"Remiel Quillan." Laura said with a smile, glad to see Kalvin starting to look a little better. Then again, she couldn't really mention the fact she waas living as a maid to pay for daily living with the same Lord.

"Leolin gets to stay in his stables, and I've been looking after his griffin chick. Might make a decent racer when he's old enough." This was partially true. Though she was looking after Taliesin for free, and that was because the sweet little chick had melted her heart. Then again, most small animals had that effect on the country girl.

Laying down in front of Kalvin, nearly halfway out of his stall, the griffin leaned his neck and head against Kalvin. Reaching about the lad's shoulder with his beak nearly straight up, the griffin chirped softly in hopes of being petted in his favorite spot beneath his jaw.

Knowing exactly what Leolin was thinking, Kalvin stuffed his brush in his apron and stroked Leolin under the chin. In any case, it was good to be loved. “Has Leolin had any chicks?”

It was a harmless question, a way to keep the conversation going as long as possible.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 14, 2007 8:41 pm

"Actually, he has." Laura looked to Leolin smugly. "His mate laid three eggs, but time only knows if all of them will hatch. They're due any day now."

The most likely reason she could think of for Leolin to have done so poorly could be his new family. He had neglected his training to hunt for Kedri to ensure she had plenty to eat.

When Kalvin reached the special spot just under his beak, the griffin leaned heavily against the boy as his back leg thundered against the ground. It wouldn't stop shaking until the lad stopped scratching.

Kalvin couldn't help giggling at Leolin's familar thumping. He always seemed to open up around animals, especially gryphons. "Do you think I could see when they hatch? I've never seen a baby gryphon before."
