Would they hire a gamer girl who's 16 years old?
PostPosted: Tue Aug 14, 2007 10:48 pm

They might...

The age limit used to be 18, but recently I think they've lowered it to 16.

Just to be safe--try to find out as much as you can about EB Games. Most jobs like to hire someone who knows about the company.
Also look at different reviews for games; they'll know that you're serious about the job and you can also be of assistance to customers. And you know as a gamer girl you love to spout your knowledge. 3nodding

I'm sure they have a site you can check up on to see the age requirement.

Good luck.

If they were hiring, probably. I applied when I was sixteen, and didn't get hired, but I don't think it was because I was 16 or a girl...I think it was just because they weren't hiring at the time but I filled out an application anyway ^^;;

as someone whose been working for gamestop (which has owned ebgames for the past couple of years now) i will tell you this. we dont normally hire a lot of 16 year old girls. i have one at my store and we hired her more out of the fact that we were desperate and she had extremely open avaliability.

but if you want something to sort of pre-judge yourself on if you have a shot at the job, then try this.
-do you have prior work experience?
-are you a true gamer who plays and knows about all games and not just the stereotypical gamer chick who only plays rpg's b/c they find feminine male characters to be "uber-hawt!!!"
-are the dying for employees or is there no rush for them to get any?
-is your avaliability completely open or do you only have a couple of days that you can work?

depending on how you answer those questions would essentialy tell you how things would work out in the long run of things.
hope that helps.

Age is the only thing that might stand in your way, unless you dont have work experience then that too but otherwise yes they would hire you.

i was hired at gamestop when i was 17 for the christmas season (they'll hire anyone during christmas) but then they just kept me on, and i worked there for 2 years.
honestly i think urban_samurai said it best- they'll hire you if you have experience and are available to work the days they need.

eh- it wasn't the best job i've ever had, but it was pretty fun. the perks are nice because you can take home any game to play and you get the nice discount (i heard it went down at gamestop when eb games bought it out, it used to be 20%)
but- you still have to deal with shitty people and pretty shady guys hitting on you. PLUS I HATED HOW I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO HAD TO DUST AND VACCUME JUST BECAUSE I WAS A GIRL!!!!!! (ok my rant is over sweatdrop )

This is definitely the most accurate (no offense to anyone else).

I've worked at GameStop for the past three years and I can say, they like to hire girls they know come in there pretty darn often (or at least, when she comes in, she knows what she's talking about and doesn't request Final Fantasy, The Sims or DDR all the time). I was actually offered a job and had no real intention of hiring, but that's besides the point.

Being 16 is the minimum, but I know most places prefer no younger than 17 because you need to be no younger than 17 to buy a rated "M" game! It doesn't hurt to try though... especially if you're close to turning 17.

Oh, and be sure to talk to the manager directly, and in person. That way he can put a face to the pretty name. wink

I used to think that would be an awesome job, too! But I never had a chance to try it. =( The only "retail" job I've ever had was at an ice cream shop (but yummmm, free ice cream! I gained weight that summer, haha.).

But, if you're planning to shift over to other parts of the games industry -- like journalism or development -- then having solid proof of your passion for games (like working for Gamestop) helps. It's not at all necessary, though. If you can show your enthusiasm for games just through your voice and [removed](and knowledge), then that's enough.

I'm not big into working with customers, so I'm just as happy not to be in retail. =P
