some people do it to avoid people tracking them on the site and see what they've put who's their friends ect.
its a privacy issue mainly.

alot of people that have public threads, or that become somewhat famous on gaia get bombarded with pm's comments and other such things to the point that they can't even read their friends messages.

I see him all the time in the QA forums helping people out as quick as he can.
