Vate had on his best irritated face. The one he usually saved when explaining something obvious to the most annoying person on Gaia. Usually he kept it for Thali. Not today. Not when there was a toddler sitting on the couch, looking at him curiously.
"Kid, cut it out." Vate said, finally. "Where are your parents?" Then it clicked. Thali must have done this. ARGH. Thali would. She was just that evil. She knew Vate wasn't good with children, unless they were Stasia's. That was the exception. "...You saw someone with ears like mine?" Vate asked, looking at the boy suspiciously.
The toddler shook his head. His? Vate didn't know what gender the kid was; he couldn't tell. He certainly was dressed like a boy.. "Where did you come from? What's your name?"
The toddler simply looked at him, with an expressionless face. Vate was trying to keep his temper. Not only had Thali sent him a toddler who wouldn't tell him where he'd come from, as a practical joke, but he couldn't return the child.
The toddler seemed amused, as he silently pressed a folded piece of paper into Vate's hand. The man blinked in surprise, and unfolded it. It didn't tell him much. Except that the boy's name was Alexei, and that he. It. Whatever the child was, was to stay with him.
Vate crumpled up the note. So the child.. Alexei.. was his. He didn't know what to think. "Alright, you can stay." He told the boy. "Just.. None of that weird kid stuff."
Alexei gave his new father a peaceful looking smile, before leaning against the back of the couch.
