So we talk to it and…a kid shows up? What?
“So…what is it and what does it do, Xaga?â€
Suuri looked up from her newspaper, shaking dyed-white hair out of her eyes and absentmindedly wondering if she should get it cut again. She glanced at the…whatever it was…in Xaga’s hand without much interest. “So, it’s like a light-up stick. What does it do?†she repeated. Xaga shrugged and twirled the receiver through her fingers.
“We can talk to the kid through it,†she said, almost like she was describing the weather. ‘It’s kind of cloudy.’ That kind of tone. Suuri paused, considered this, and folded her paper with slow, deliberate motions.
“Kid,†she repeated. Xaga nodded. Suuri frowned slightly. “When did ‘kid’ come into this?†Xaga shrugged.
“I told you, they left a voicemail at the office, I called back, I visited the place, and this is what I got.†She held up the receiver, which was flashing faint green. “They told me I’d be getting a kid and this is what I’d talk to it using until the kid showed up.â€
“So there’s a kid involved,†Suuri said once more, just to clarify. Xaga nodded. Suuri frowned more.
“What are we gonna do with a kid?â€
“You don’t need to worry,†Xaga said. “It’ll be my responsibility. You don’t even live here all the time, so it’s not like the kid’s gonna be your responsibility or anything.†She ran a hand through her hair and shrugged. Suuri frowned.
“Xaga, someone’s gonna need to watch the kid while you’re at work. You gonna want me to take care of it then?†she asked. “I can take my crap home, and that’s not a problem.†Xaga thought about it for a moment, and then shrugged.
“Just figured since you and Hadra were back together…†she trailed off. Suuri shrugged.
“I’m not even sure she’s really my girlfriend,†she said. “I’m sticking around for now, because Dad’s sick of me in the house, and the last thing Yuki needs bothering her is a little sister. She’s got two kids an’ all.†She shrugged. “I mean, I’ve been in this apartment for the past four years. You can’t kick me out now. And if I’m living here, I’m ending up with the kid in the house whether I like it or not.†She smiled.
“So lemme see that receiver. I want to talk to the mysterious child.†Xaga mutely handed over the cylinder, and Suuri smiled. “Hey there, kiddo. You’re hearing me and your mum talk. I’m your aunt Suuri. What d’you think of that?â€
“We’re not sisters,†Xaga protested. Suuri ignored her and handed the transmitter back to her. Xaga shook her head and talked to the cylinder, feeling like a complete idiot.
“Hey there,†she said softly. “I look forward to seeing you.â€
