haha. I suck pretty bad at carving, but I do really enjoy it. I can honestly say that I think I'm better at carving than clay.
gah...must do responsible school things.

Shoot... I took a look at some of the ceramics majors' work the other day... Man, my stuff is so heavy compared to theirs. So that's my goal now: make my stuff lighter. lol.

I don't know if I agree. Sometimes I like heavier stuff. I feel like light things will break. but maybe this is a hallmark of good ceramics?

The lighter stuff is more delicate, but you've also got less weight that the rest of the piece is having to support. Granted, if it's the bottom that's heavy, it's not so much of a problem. Really, though. I picked up some of the seniors' stuff... Felt only a little thicker than store-bought china and it was really smooth because of the glaze they used.

I think I see what you're saying. I never considered the weight factor in stability. I just always feel like light, thin stuff will break. Maybe if I drop something heavy it will chip or something, but it probably won't shatter like crazy. That's how it works in my head, lol.

*dances around* I got the clay moogle painted today. biggrin Went all the way back home with him wrapped in bubble wrap and inside a box full of packing peanuts. Coat tail piece is going to take a lot of touching up to get it to look right, though... *sigh*
Anywho. Yeah. The thinner the piece is, the easier it can be to break before and after it's been bisque fired. (Certainly before, since at that point it can still be molded/added onto if it's made wet.) Several cups and bowls (and moogle coat tails) get broken before they're bisque fired. After that, it takes more to break them.

gosh. I have finals next week. I'm basically dying. And I wish I had my invitation letter to get my visa for China. Geebus. I NEED IT.

I remember I made a sculpture once. I was a demon that looked like it was doing a little dance. A few years ago, the arm broke off.

Finals are coming up for me as well... gonk Which also means every other assignment that the teachers have given out within the past two weeks is due, as well. *sigh*

yep. I scored an internship to work in Zhengzhou, China. I leave in two weeks. I'm sending my visa application today, expedited style. Oh...the money....ick.

yep, I'm totally in Zhengzhou now, working at the administrative office in the department of foreign language. it's pretty fun, but sometimes they have nothing for me to do, so i just sit there.
i'm basically having a blast, though.
