The glass falls asunder and metal beams ring to the meeting of shattered bone and dented steel. Screams of terror echo through the inscrutable halls, blinding light, a streak of crimson, and the maddening chimes of ammunition. Schklikt, klikt! Again it struck. Voomp! A tormented cries out; the pain is unbearable, his bones cracking, skin stretching and tearing, defiled by the abomination that was breaking free from its shell; six eyes that gazed hungrily at its prey, faceless corpses defiled and devoured. It all felt so familiar, the carnal satisfaction of the kill, the sickening ease of parting the limbs. There were only glimpses, one moment strapped to a chair in a frenzied panic, the next baptized in blood of men, reborn as something less than man, but also more.

The sound of thunder came like a whip from the heavens, and in that instant, he regained consciousness, moving upright and frantically looking around in search of a nonexistent threat. His breathing was heavy, heart racing from the violence of his nightmare. He’d been screaming in his sleep, the trauma of those years having worsened ever since he found himself searching for his captors. He thought them dead, but now he wasn’t sure.

Sometimes pain was like adhesive for two broken people too strong for others to realize. Her rest came easier, a dreamless slumber in the arms of her lover, but his ghosts were stronger, and louder too. He screamed, and the distress woke her up immediately, her hands glowing as she prepared to fight, in her pajamas if need be, but there was nothing, just ghosts, just nightmares. “Hey, it’s okay, it’s okay!” she said reassuringly, reaching out scooting over to hold his head. “I’m here, Michael, just me. It’s okay…” she said promisingly. While she was relieved there wasn’t truly a threat, his nightmares had only been getting worse since he began his investigation. Whatever comfort she could provide, she’d try, her fingertips gently sliding through his hair.

When they destroyed the facility, they expected to be hunted by some shadowy assassins, ready to return their “assets” to their custody, but when they didn’t, and they kept peace, they’d convinced themselves that the monster under the bed was gone, dead. They could be wrong, and every hint of a normal life they’d found was at risk again.

A lover’s comfort came in the form of arms coiled around him reassuringly. “I can’t rest easy knowing they’re still out there. It’s been years since that transformation, and I still have flashes.” When he saw dead men, it wasn’t the men he’d hunted as a vigilante; the ultimate distinction was that he could end a man’s life and sleep fine, but to horrendously kill and eat people as an out of control monster was a level of guilt he couldn’t easily overcome. He couldn’t forget if he tried; every time he had to plunge a needle into his shoulder, he was reminded that he relied so heavily on the serum. He wasn’t a chemist, and if it weren’t for him reaching out to a sympathetic doctor to reverse engineer the stabilizer, he’d have been long gone by now. Now the bastards responsible may have been back. How long had the damned bogeymen been hiding? Were they watching them all this time? “I’m seeing the trends: people vanishing, known superhumans gone without a trace, professionally abducted.” He played kidnapper for them before; he knew how they operated, and felt helpless knowing others were being taken.
