Carolina walked with the boys, but she stayed quiet. Something about this place was unsettling, and not in the way one might normally think. She wasn't talking about it feeling haunted, because she knew the answer to that; it was infested with mutated patients for an unknown reason. What was unsettling was why they were this way. True, she was only a photographer and not a journalist, but she wanted to uncover what happened. Mostly because she felt these...people...might need saving. Something changed them, and it was likely some attempt to cure a mental disease. Or someone's sick trick to mutate a "cure" into something else. They had an idea, but no proof. The dilemma weighed heavy on her conscious: find the answers or leave?
"Aeron, you with us?" she asked suddenly, noticing he was lagging behind. Something seemed to be troubling him. She wondered if it was what she said. She felt terrible having said it without thinking. Was it eating at him that much?
She turned to Rowan and Kai and the men stopped to wait for Aeron. Carolina was at least happy that the other two men seemed as concerned as she did about their companion. Right now, at a time like this, they needed everyone together to face all perils.

I watched as the group struggled to even cope. This wasn't ending well. If we couldn't work together and put differences aside, we might die here as a result. I didn't want that happening. I had a life back home and friends waiting for me. Maybe I didn't have a wife or children, but I had people who cared about me. People who warned me not to do this job. Boy, if I'd have listened I wouldn't be here now. Then again, someone else would have and they might have perished by now. Maybe it was for the best I was here with Carolina and Aeron and Kai.
"Aeron?" I asked when I realised he was lagging behind.
{{OoC}} I don't think BCO is coming back, and I have a bad feeling AD is gone too....so I made another character to at least have three in the rp. I'll ask some friends of mine if they want to join, but don't hold your breath ND. {{/OOC}}
"Hey Aeron, you with us?" Carolina said as she turned to face him, only to find him no longer behind the group. Where on Earth had he just gone? She heard Dexter, who'd been with them from the start, ask where he'd gone and she could only be silent. There was no confrontation, no noises, he and Kai were just gone. Without a trace. She looked to Rowan with a terrified glare and kept her flashlight out in one hand and her camera in the other, ready to take a succession of pictures with the flash on. Ready to face the enemy; the patients of the very Asylum they were standing -- locked -- in.
Dexter, an Investigative Journalist from Nashville, stood behind the group and had his camera out and recording. He'd witnessed everything that had happened to Carolina and Rowan, and it was certainly an eye-opener. The second he turned his head to talk to the other men, he noticed they were completely gone. Vanished in an instant. He blinked and looked to Carolina and Rowan with a frightened look.
"Where....," he said with a loud gulp, "where did they go? They were just there!"
He reached into his deep pants pocket to where he stashed the handgun he'd found in one of the offices and checked the ammo he had. A full magazine. If he was going to have this gun for any useful means, he'd need more ammunition and he'd need it soon. This place would be the death of him if he wasn't careful.

I looked around, puzzled by what Carolina and Dexter had both just said. How could two people just disappear like that? But when I looked, I couldn't find them. Not even a single trace. They had just seemed to vanish. I could feel my stomach tying itself in knots over what happened and my heart sank. The group had gone from the five of us in one room to three and I didn't like it one bit. We had a better chance of survival with more people.
Then I wondered where the others were that had come with us. There were at least three or four more, besides Aeron and Kai, who had been assigned to investigate Rutledge Asylum. If they hadn't gone the same way as the three of us- Carolina, Aeron, and myself- then where were they? Could we find them? Maybe Kai and Aeron had gone to find them to bring the group together. It was a bittersweet lie, but I was hoping it was truth. I didn't want to believe that two of our party were gone just in the blink of an eye.
Carolina breathed slowly to let her nerves settle. Whatever had happened to the others in the group, she had to pull through. Rowan and Dexter were still there with her and they had to brave the perils ahead of them together. "Okay," she began, "we lost some people but we have to move on. What are we going to do from here? Where do we go?"
Dex sighed and wanted to console Carolina, but right now they needed to focus. She had a point though; they needed to continue on to find a way out. They knew the main door was locked, maybe one of the windows on the second floor or higher weren't? Maybe they could climb down and get out that way. It was at least worth a try.
"Maybe try and see if the windows are unlocked? Climb down and get to the van? Wait a reasonable distance away while we call the cops or someone to give them what we've found?" he querried.
"No good, we need more evidence for that. And from what I can tell the windows are all boarded up from the outside," Carolina countered.
"Well damn," he sighed.

I looked at Dexter and Carolina and sighed. Carolina was right, we knew from the first moment we walked into the Asylum that the windows were locked from the outside. Well, boarded up. Now it made me wonder how on Earth that could have been done. Maybe some of the survivors, staff perhaps, had done it to keep the "patients" in? It would make sense; you wouldn't want these freaks loose on society. "Regardless," I began, "we should continue with our previous plan of action. Find the generator and turn on the lights. We know these things are nocturnal and dislike the bright lights. It might be our only real chance at getting out of here."

I love how Dexter is Dylan Alverez/Funny Man out of Hollywood Undead! heart
Carolina nodded and followed after Rowan in the lead. She held her camera in her hands, ready to snap pictures with her flash at any given moment. She knew the boys had their guns out and drawn. Hell, even Rowan was holding a knife in his other hand at this point. Dexter walked at the rear, constantly checking behind (and sometimes above and below) with his flashlight in his other hand. We all seemed ready to face the horrors that awaited us in this Hell-hole.
She wandered around halls, looking to the map and leading the way from the middle of the group. Every now and again she'd hear a noise and snap a series of photos in quick concession; she must have put her "series photograph" setting on. It worked out better for her any-ways. Each time she was relieved that she had caught nothing on the camera, but she knew it was only a matter of time until she did.
Dex could tell that the longer they were here, the more the place would drive them insane. Paranoia had already begun creeping in, so he wondered how to bring them back to a proper frame of mind. Normally he'd blast some music, but that might draw the "patients" near and they didn't want that. He began going over his favorite bands he'd already been out to see in concert, bands he wanted to go and see live, places he'd visited with family, friends he was dying to see again, his job back home in Nashville, and other things. All the worry and dread seemed to fade away from his mind.
"Hey guys," he said calmly, "do me a favor. Think about everything and anything you miss or want to see or a place you want to go. Right now, in your head. Don't ask why, 'cause I think you know."
He smiled when Carolina and Rowan both seemed to become less tense and the atmosphere around them seemed to calm. No one was taking constant pictures at every little noise and the paranoia consuming them all had seemed to fade away. Maybe they could make it out alive now....

I was never more thankful for Dexter being there with us. From the beginning, I wondered why this shy kid had tagged along with us, since he never said much and was more like a shadow. Now, I realised he was the anchor that was keeping the group together. We needed him now more than ever. When it came to thinking about things, I thought about a picnic with my parents back home along the river or sitting beside the fireplace in the family log cabin amongst the oak trees of Virginia. As we went along, we came to a blocked path that should have taken us outside to the power plant where the generator was housed. Now we realised it wouldn't be as easy as it first seemed. I looked to Carolina, who had the map of the building. "Where to now?" I asked.
Carolina sighed when she realised the passage was blocked, but then again, she should have predicted it. If these 'patients' hated the light, why would they let the generator be easily accessible? The truth was that it would be difficult, but they had to do something. They didn't have the supplies to stay for long. They had barely any food and not much water. Hell, they didn't even have any good medical supplies if something went wrong. They were ill-equipped, but they were also uninformed. They had no way of knowing what had truly transpired in this Asylum before they got here. She looked to the schematics and looked to see if there was anything they could do.
"If this is right and we don't have any blockages along the way, we should be able to get through this section here. It's a walkway along the cafeteria that the guards and orderlies would use to watch the patients from above. If we can break one of the windows and climb down, it shouldn't be too hard to climb the fence around the generator," she admitted.
Dex listened to Carolina and the calm nature he'd had before was all but gone now. This unfortunate turn of events was putting him in a state of panic he was unsure if he'd return from. It was making him dizzy when he shook his head and focused. He couldn't lose himself to the paranoia of this place. He had to be strong and help Rowan and Carolina, and himself, escape from this place. Maybe, along the way, they'd find Aeron and Kai again. He certainly hoped so. He would be heartbroken if they left and didn't end up collecting their partners.
"Well, let's go then," he said as he walked after Carolina in the lead.

All of us in the group crept along the hallway, around desks and other obstacles. Sometimes it was a tight squeeze, other times it took some creative thinking to find a way around by going through the other rooms nearby. Eventually, we made it to the walkway around the Mess Hall. Countless patients sat at the long tables, motionless and still. What was odd about the situation was that there was constant light in the Mess Hall, powered by a small generator buzzing in the corner. The lights were on, bright and glaring, beaming down on them all. These patients also seemed very different from the others they had encountered so far. They weren't covered in blood and didn't seem to mind the light. They seemed docile, peaceful, almost calm. Several looked up at us and gave a brisk wave as if they were merely acknowledging their existence, before looking away and back to staring blankly ahead while seated at the tables.
“Anyone else have a clue what is going on?” Dexter asked.
“No idea. But I guess maybe these guys weren't subjected to that supposed cure and have barricaded themselves here. From their behavior, I'd guess shell-shocked?” Rowan guessed.
The boys looked up and noticed she was far ahead of them, Rowan and Dexter trailing behind her. The walk-way was littered with obstacles such as boxes, broken glass, and dead bodies of guards. Not a pleasant sight, but with what they'd encountered so far, it wasn't that shocking any more. They caught up as quickly as they could and wondered where to go from where they were. They were now on the second floor, back to the space they had been at the start when they went up the stairs. The doors they were in front of had been locked before, but they had a chance to get through.
“What do you think we'll find?” Rowan asked.
“Do you really want to know?” Carolina countered with a frown, “I'm just hoping nothing attacks us. Rowan, you should go first. You have a gun and all.”
Gulping down his fear, Rowan clutched the pistol in his hands and readied himself. Carolina kicked the doors open and used her camera's flash as a barrage in case any patients were hiding. Three of them went running from the lights and Rowan managed to shoot another one charging when Carolina put her camera down for a moment.
“Good shot,” she congratulated as he moved ahead with the others.
“Thanks,” Rowan mumbled, “I think.”
Carolina walked after Vincent and Kenneth, clutching her thin blue flannel shirt around her frail body. As night approached, the temperature began dropping. She hadn't expected to have stayed so late and the cold caught her off guard. She was hot during the day in her long blue-jeans, flannel shirt, and white tank top...but now it was the opposite.
The boys all had slacks or jeans as well, but most of them had long sleeves or jackets. She shivered slightly and tried to keep her teeth from clattering as the group walked along in the darkness. Dexter tapped her shoulder and handed her a grey jacket from his bag.
“You seemed cold,” he mentioned with a small smile.
She took it and let the warmth soak into her hands, “thanks, Dex.”
The group continued down the hallway and looked at the blueprints to try and find where to go from where they were. They decided that if they could find their way to the side of the building closest to the room they thought the generator would be in, they might be able to scale down the building. After all, it did mention construction on the page Carolina had printed.
“What if there is no way down?” Rowan quipped.
“Well,” Dexter said with a grin, “we could always throw you down to the ground with a rope and you can help us all get down.”
“That's not even a funny joke,” Carolina snapped. She glared the boys down as they were misbehaving and they all seemed to fall back into their serious nature once more. She cleared her throat as she tied her hair back, looking to the blueprints laying on the floor. She put them in her messenger bag and held her camera in her hand. “Let's go,” she calmly stated.
As the group moved on, they checked each room carefully to see if there was any more information they needed. Most of any documents they found were too damaged in some way or parts of it missing, so there was little to be recovered. They did find some weapons, however, in the form of a range of knives. “Everyone should take one. Even you, Rowan, that gun won't have ammunition for long if we run into more of those...freaks,” Dexter mentioned.
Rowan nodded and placed the knife in his bag, making sure he could grab it quickly if he needed to. With everyone now holding some sort of weapon on their person, the group was at least a little more content with being trapped inside the walls. Not that it was a good idea to begin with. Still, they had a slim chance to get out now. Flashlights out, cameras at the ready, the group moved slowly down the hallway towards the windows they needed to be at. The gates meant to keep the patients in where, for some reason, unlocked in certain places and locked in others. It almost felt like they were being lead to a certain place; to a trap.
“If we're gonna get down, we better do it quick. I have a bad feeling something is about to happen,” he muttered.
They made it to the window and pried the wooden planks from the frame. Although the window was smeared in what they hoped was blood, they could faintly make out the shape of the Generator Building. They couldn't see anything beyond that and wondered if it was worth the risk. “It's only the second floor, we could just jump and hope for the best,” Rowan mentioned.
“No, not a good idea. We don't know what's down there. We could jump and end up impaling ourselves on debris or something. If we want to see what's down there, we need to break the window and look for ourselves,” Dexter countered.
“Dex has a point,” Carolina said, “so let's break it and see what we have to deal with.”
Dexter pulled his jacket over his fist and punched the window as hard as he could. Fragments of glass shattered and rained down onto the floor. He repeated his method three more times until he had managed to remove the glass from the window and could look down. “Good news, there is scaffolding here. Looks like it's been here a while and might not be strong enough, but it's something. And as far as I can tell in this dark there isn't much or any debris at the bottom if we do fall. And from the ground it's only a couple hundred feet until we get to that building so even better,” he admitted.
Just as he was talking, Carolina screamed and Rowan opened fire on shadows approaching from the darkness. The sound of the glass had brought more of the patients running towards them and the group retaliated the only way they knew how; bright lights and gunfire. As suddenly as they had appeared, they left. Wondering what had happened, snapping floor-boards got their attention. Vincent and Kenneth grabbed onto the window sill as the floor gave way, leaving the others scrambling to take hold of something. Rowan, Emil, and Dexter were able to reach the metal gate along the wall to their right and hold to that.
Carolina, however, didn't have time to react and the floor gave way under her feet, causing her to fall through into the darkness below.
