And besides, if Hermione forced the elves to be free, what exactly would they do??
The house elves have been kept under society's thumb for so long that the elves wouldn't know what to do because they are too used to being oppressed and they can't fit back in with the wizarding world as equals.
It's like freeing birds when they have been bred in captivity since they were born.
Anyone remember that movie, 'Fly Away Home'? Where the girl found a nest of eggs, they hatched and she became the mommy for the birds?
The same situation would apply for the birds as well as the house elves, but Hermione doesn't seem to catch on.

Oh darn it, I was just going to copy and paste my discussion on this from Hogwarts House Challenge guild, but I just remembered that it is gone forever...

But, I'll try to remember.

I definitly do not enjoy SPEW. Hermione wants to force the House Elves out of 'slavery' but they certainly do not want to be taken out of it. Dobby is a rarity of elves, one who was overly abused. Perhaps his abuse caused some brain damage...
House elves live to serve. They know nothing else. When they are 'freed' they are miserable and would like nothing more to die.
Most people are like "The Ministry should stop the cruelty!" but the Ministry has not the time, nor the money to spend on such a matter.
The house elves would have to be educated first that there is a better life. They have been taught all their lives that what they are doing is right, and their ancestors have done it forever.
The Ministry would have to keep elves away from their families from birth, just so they would not be taught about the serving life.
But that alone is an act of cruelty because they are forcing babies away from their mothers.
It would take probably a couple of generations of elves to get this to work. And I believe elves live an extremely long time compared to common pets and such. It'd probably take generations of wizards to do this.

But wizards don't have the time when they have a war going on. And when the war is over, they still won't have time. They will be busy with common criminals, thinning cauldrons and dragons and such.

It is for a good cause, but most house elves don't appreciate it.

Random notes: I found it more amusing somehow when I read "Spew"'s, thought about the swedish translation:

"Fisa", which means "Fart" in english. rofl

SPEW is kind of a stupid idea, but I'm glad Hermione thought of it. It adds to her character and gives her some kind of glaring flaw. The thing about Hermione... she's CRAZY. Not Bellatrix-crazy. Idealistic, overworked crazy. Her golden moment was in OotP when she tells Harry "You can't hurt a baby!" or something. If she didn't have moments like this, and SPEW, she'd be a scary good-grade-machine.

Hermione's intentions were always good, that's obvious, but I believe she took things a little too far. I agree that House Elves could (and should) of been treated with more respect and compassion, but it was clear that they weren't meant to be completely free. Dobby was the one exception. sweatdrop

I think the reason she felt that way towards House Elves was her Muggle (I feel like a geek when I use wizard terms... xp ) heritage and up-bringing.
