He was not used to so much space above, being a forest dweller.
But he had to, didn't he. He had to find a fae to bond with, so that he could save his forest. That was what the nameless druid had told him before he died.
And that was what he was going to do.
So he had to traverse open space to find wherever he had to go. He hoped his path woudl take him through woods again. It felt... wrong. Exposed. Out here.
A shape caught his eye. He perked up. What was that? Someone... was approaching. Human? Dragon?
He reared up for a better look.

T'lak Trotted lightly along the ends of the road, keeping near to the grass and brush at the side ready to disappear into it in case of danger. He'd oddly hatched away from anyone else. he didn't even know if there was anyone else. He just sensed danger like any hatchling, and lived off what bugs he could catch. He'd been hungrier when he first started following the road, but he'd encountered Cref, a spectrum, who wasn't talkative but had who'd him how to hunt, bugs and mice. Cref was away now, he wandered off a lot, but always eventually came back. T'lak was alone, and he glanced all around him as he went, not wanting some larger thing to think he was edible... or something.

He caught sight of something farther down the road. It's brownish colors didn't seem threatening to him, but he slowed to a walk. He wanted to see who it was, but wanted to be able to run if need be. If he was a touch larger he'd fly, but his wings were still stubby, and he hadn't gotten the hang of it yet.

A dragon, a red one no less! That was what ruko could tell from where he was.
He rarely contacted others of his kind, but the few times he had encountered a dragon had been positive.
He stayed on his hind legs.
"Hail!" he called out, before returning to all fours and approaching closer, "It is rare to see another on this r..."
Wait, were those wings? Feathered wings?
He stopped and squinted.
Dragons had lost their wings. He had met someone who had been bound to a human to regain their flight. That was one of the good experiences.
he sat, allowing the other to approach.
"If I may be so direct..." He said, cautiously. The old druid had taught him to take care in words.
"What are you? Are you dragon or bird?"

He paused as the other called out, noticing the abrupt cutoff.
What was it that had startled this other? Was he odd? He didn't know.
But the brown one didn't seem dangerous...
He walked close, to meet this other, but cautiously kept a distance, since he seemed to make the other nervous.
T'lak tilted his head to the side surprised at the question.
"A dragon, I am a dragon as far as I know, I have not the size of a bird do I?"

"I know of birds your size..." said ruko, staring down, nonthreateningly.
He crouched onto all fours in an attempt to be friendly and keep himself at eye level.
"My name is Ruko. And yours?" He had never been taught the importance of names and the value of keeping them secret.
"I apologize for my boldness, but your wings... I have not met many other dragons..." he sat down as if to prove the point and his willingness to converse, "but none that I met had wings like those of a bird... just these." he wiggled the vestigal fins on his back.

"Oh." T'lak replied suprised, "I haven't seen one my size yet."
He noticed the other's attempts to be nonthreatening and sat. He paused for a moment, something niggling at him that he should be careful with it, but decided it would be ok, this time.
"T'lak, my name is T'lak." it was an odd sound, his name, somewhat like the click of stones against each other, or the cackle of scavenger birds.
" I haven't seen another yet, I wouldn't know. I was born this way." T'lak stretched his own wings and flapped them a touch. "Is it really that rare?"

"Born that way?"
That was fascinating.
"Can you fly? As in, truly fly?" he frowned at the teeny wings the young ascended sported.
"I cannot, obviously. Nor do I really wish to..." said Ruko, though a glance at the sky told otherwise. He did want to fly, and he did want to stay groundbound.
"I wouldn't know if it was rare. As I said, I have met few other dragons. I know that many Fae have them... Or I think they do?"
He hesitated. The old Druid had told him SOMETHING about the fae, but not much.
"I seek them. The Fae. That is why I am on this road and not roaming my woods..." he felt an explanation was in order.
"And you..." he concentrated on the name, "T'lak?" Seemingly pleased he had reinforced the memory of the name,
"What brings you to this silent road?"

"Yes, or at least I came out of my egg this way. I guess something could have fiddles with me while I was in it?" T'lak had vague notions that magic existed because of Cref. "No, I can't, they're to small now..." He flapped his wings as if to prove his point.
"I might be able to extend a hop....." He trailed off, tactfully ignoring the other's indecision with his self.
"Oh, Cref has wings.... I don't know about Fae.... What are fae?" He hadn't encountered anyone to talk to, and Cref was a spectrum, spectrums didn't speak.
"T'lak" he repeated his name for the other "I... had nowhere else to go? Nothing else to do?" it was true, but he felt some would not believe that enough of a reason.

"hmm." Ruko pondered the conundrum of wings for a moment before answering.
"Fae are beings that can help me save my forest." It was a lame answer, yes.
"i dont know much about them. Only that they are powerful, and not human..." he shook his head, "and that I need to find them."
He decided to sit. It was easier to talk to the hatchling that way.
"If you have nothing to do, then you can come with me? It was probably the direction you were travelling in, or so my old..." Friend? Master? mentor? "druid told me."
His tail switched once. "it would be good to have company, and perhaps we can find out the mystery of your wings along the way."
He tilted his head.
"Who is Cref?" It didn't occur to him to look around.

"Cref is ah, uh...." Kier didn't know exactly what Cref was, he wasn't dragon, he was pretty sure he wasn't fae, whatever fae was. "Cref will come back when he feels like it." he finished at last, not really able to say anything else about him. He smiled, hesitantly. "I wasn't going anywhere so I might as well." Plus traveling with Ruko, who seemed to know at least more than he did, would probably be good. They could be friends, like he and Cref.
"I'm not really bothered about the why of my wings, it just feels like it's supposed to be and not something odd, but I could help you."

“Oh.” Ruko decided not to press, but he did c**k his head. “Will he be able to catch up with us?” whoever or whatever Cref was, the hatchling seemed fond of it. Ruko would feel bad if, in his haste to save his homeland, he ended up abandoning the hatchling's friend to the wilds.
He looked up, a bit wary of the lowering sun.
“I'd like to find shelter before nightfall...” Though he was a dragon... There were things out here he feared. He didn't know what they were but... The darkness brought things that he wanted to avoid.
He stretched a bit, buying his new friend... and his friend's friend... time to make an appearance. “Sorry that we are going to go the way you just came, but thats just how paths cross.”
