I know a lot of Aspies who are cut off by society try to get back in. Has anyone else stopped trying? Personally, I take pride in my separation.

Yeah, after a while I stopped trying to make new friends since it was too hard. I still have the friends I've made before then, but the group is small though. :/
Although, I don't mind being alone a lot. It helps.

I stopped briefly during high school, shortly after my diagnosis when I finally felt that it gave me license to be different. I was frustrated, but I realized relatively* quickly that being alone I would just brood and remain unsatisfied. So ultimately I changed my methods. No longer did I absolutely need to fit in, but I could work with my talents enough that I could get by without falling completely "out of touch" with the mainstream.
*Relatively speaking...within the course of two years, approximately, with an epiphany in the latter half.

I stopped trying for about a month and I descended RAPIDLY. I ended up losing 3 close friends, and I won an all-expense-free trip to the mental hospital for a week. I've decided to try to always keep trying, but never exhaust myself.

Well, I think everyone on the planet needs social interaction on some kind of level. You can't just completely isolate yourself for the rest of your life. It's just not healthy. sad
I understand that sometimes trying to make new friends and relationships is difficult. But, it's very much worth the effort in the long run. If you're having trouble with the whole social thing, then it's ok to step back and have a little "breather," but don't just swear off of making new friends and meeting new people. It's an important part of our lives as human beings. 3nodding

I alienate myself because I feel depressed, frustrated, or angry at myself.

I have a nice group of friends and family. It is hard for me to meet new people, so I can get frustrated at times.

I don't know how old everybody is here in this guild, but I am in my 30s. Nowadays, people from high school come and seek me out. I never stopped trying, by the way.
Oh, and here's a tip: Try hanging out with people who have similar interests to you.

I find it very hard to make new friends and meet new people. I don't get out much since I don't go to school or work so I often just talk to people online and make friends that way. It is easier for me that way. *shrugs*
