While
what Fern first said would have called for a 'little' inner-panicking, the fact that she was at least being honest made it a bit better... Just a bit. Most of what made it tolerable was his 'glossing over the details' and the failed attempts to make friends.

Well, at least he didn't wind up getting an enemy instead.

"I suppose you could say that I'm looking for a book," He said, "This library is huge, but...Well, let's just say that getting lost didn't help me pick one that I'd like to read.

He paused for a moment, and then, "Could you help me pick one? .... Or at least, guide me out of this section?"

Fern was always painfully honest. She simply did not see the point sometimes in pretending you were doing one thing when clearly you were doing another. Plus it was fun to see people's reactions when the truth was more fun than a lie.

"'Course I'll help! But only with the guidin' bit, not the book bit. Afraid I can't decide which one would be for you if our wings depended on it."
And so, Fern turned on her heel and began walking gently and quietly to the end of the case. She didn't think that this place was so difficult to navigate; all you really had to do was go to the end until you hit a wall and keep adjacent to it. But apparently to some ground-dwellers, finding your bearings was difficult.
Fern turned around to make sure he was coming before turning right. From there on it was a straight walk for a bit.
Her eyes turned back to Len. He was an attractive boy, but she knew better than to get feelings for someone who could barely compare in age to that of her own slipper. Still, he would be a nice friend.
"Maybe writin' your own story would be better if this place is too much for you."

He
thought about it for a moment. Writing a story wasn't something everyone could do well, and he was pretty sure that it would take lots of time- time that he had plenty of, but he had other interests he wanted to pursue. He still needed to practice his singing, which was another matter altogether, and then there was studying. Besides, there was also... studying. Len scolded himself for making up excuses. There was no reason not to at least try, but...

"I wouldn't really have a clue how to write a good story, really. Besides, dealing with this huge library would be something I'm going to have to get use to. I still attend school, afterall,"

It was another excuse, but it was the truth. Perhaps the idea to try and write a story would be put on hold until he knew his way around campus- then he'd have time to think about it. The moment he thought that, however, he suddenly wished he wasn't so hesitant about everything...

He was just being careful. He didn't really need a friend, but still, it didn't stop him from remembering that it was nice to just have one.

"Have you ever written your own story, Fern?" He asked, "Or do you find actual people more interesting than a book?"

"Of course I've written my own story!" she said, finding it funny that he should even ask. She had lived for hundreds of years. When you were around for that long, you tended to try everything at least once. Her laughing brown eyes looked at him once more before turning over to a shelf, then up towards the ceiling.
"But I do find people more interestin' than a book, sometimes. Especially the mortals 'round here. Terribly sorry if I offend, but they're a child to those of us who can't die of old age. It's quite something, for them to be adults at about twenty."

Fern thought about it all for a moment. At twenty, she had still been learning such a great deal about the world. She had just come to truly be as a person, but her life was just beginning. Age didn't claim her body like these mortals... and it frightened her to think that in fifty years some of them might be dead. That was the reason for some of her kind not to befriend mortals. The pain of losing a friend so quickly was terrible, but also, some of them never truly understood how to behave or interpret the world in the time they had.
But she did have to be accepting of them for all their foolishness, and so she acted quite foolish herself. After all, where was the fun in actually acting her age?

Len
stopped in his tracks, staring at her in disbelief. 'Mortals'? 'Can't die of old age'? A person who couldn't age... Surely she had to be joking. Yet, it certainly didn't feel like it. He blinked once, and realized that he was falling behind by a little bit, and forced himself to walk as he thought about what she said.

He had never really thought about the subject at all because, well, the topic was never brought up. The more he thought about it, though, the more it seemed scary... frightening, even, for a person to just stay the same, always. Yes, some people were 'immortalized', but the prospect of them actually living at the very moment was just different. However, that wouldn't stop them from changing mentally, right? So instead of just being 'You haven't changed at all!' in a literal sense...

...It would be 'Just like you, only different'. However, it wasn't like they couldn't 'feel' anything, like mortals do. They could probably get sick, or bleed, or... die. She wasn't entirely different from him- they were both living, and even if time was infinite for her, she still had to breathe, be healthy, and, well, live.

"Just like you, only different," Despite voicing that aloud, he couldn't quite hear it. All he knew that that was the way he was going to approach all the 'odd' things at Grove... Even if it was going to be difficult to.

Trying to drag his mind out of the heavy topic, he tried to recall what Fern had said prior to it- remembering that she did say that she did write a story. So he asked, curiously, "Could you tell me about that story? I'd like to hear it,"

Fern noticed how he fell behind, but said nothing about it. She did, though, hear his few words about being just like them. It was true and not worth commenting on, and so they kept walking. To his words about her story, though, Fern turned right around to look him in the face. She kept walking backwards, not minding if she might walk into anything. There was a certain ease with how she interacted in her environment, as if nothing would pose a problem.
"It wasn't a great story. Just a tale about adventure in the forest and love..." And suddenly Fern took on a far more serious and grounded way of speaking. Even her movement was a bit less flighty than it had been.
"Guess you might say it was brought on by me findin' a young man. He's an elf, though. And a noble. Wee bit o' a problem with us bein' so fond of each other..."

Gavin was his name. Fern thought of his dark eyes and lovely face. He was strong in body and spirit, and had unruly black hair that she adored. All of him was rather strange for an elf as most had light hair and colored eyes. Annabelle Souris, a prominent professor on campus, also had odd coloring about her, though her brown hair and eyes were still light. Gavin reminded Fern of a crow. Just thinking about him made her miss him terribly.

"...Ah,"
Len mumbled, noticing the change of atmosphere. The emotions coming from her were that of- of what? He fumbled the word in his head. It was a feeling...of sadness, but not quite. Changing the subject might lighten the mood- besides, broaching the subject seemed inappropriate, considering they had just met a while ago. Yet at the same time, he wanted her to feel better- perhaps because he, himself, was once familiar with the feeling. If he talked to her about it, she might feel a little better.

It wouldn't hurt to talk about it. If she didn't want to talk about it, she could just brush the topic aside. If she thought of him as rude- no, actually, she probably wouldn't.

"Say...What was that person's name?" He asked.
