I believe you are incorrect on this assumption. PC games have had "true 3-d" for longer than I can remember. Remember Myst? And Doom?
Lessee, Gen1 would be arcade, Gen2 would be pre-1989 fallout (Ataris and such), Gen3 is NES and Master System, Gen 4 is SNES and Genesis (and, technically, Sega CD), Gen5 is PSX (it's actually the original name of the Playstation.) SDC and N64, Gen6 is PS2 GCN and XBx, Gen7 is XB2 PS3 and Rev. If I may ask, where's the eighth one? I honestly, honestly can't see how the 8th figures in.

8-bit First generation started with Magnavox Oddesey, the very first home console.
(1972) Second generation started with Atari 2600 and Commodore 16, where consoles became greater graphically.
(1983) Third generation began with the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega's Master System.
(1989)
16-bit Fourth generation began with the Genesis and the SNES.
(1994)
32-bit Fifth generation began with Sony's Playstation and the Sega Saturn.
64-bit This isn't a seperate generation, though could be the 8th one he's refferring to, this started with Atari's Jaguar and the the N64.
(1999)
128-bit Sixth generation started with the Dreamcast and PS2.
(2006) Seventh generation, kicked off by Xbox 360, will be followed by Nintendo Revolution and PS3.
