Ch. 4

The dream had been so, vivid…But that was all it was right? A dream? The next day felt almost the same way. Sam was on edge throughout all of Sunday and Monday morning. Sitting on the bus with Cael and listening to his jokes did little to ease her un-ease. “Earth to Sam, hey, you in there?” He gave her a good poke in the side and she finally broke out of her zoning. “I’m sorry, it’s just, this weekend was kinda rough.” His head went to the side. “You talking about the dance? I thought it was fun,” He saw a look in her eye like she knew she’d done something horrible. “Sam, what’s up? You’ve been acting strange since the Saturday. What’s bugging you?” Sam looked into his eyes, they were full of concern. She began to tell him, but the bus lurched to a stop in front of the school. She let out a sigh, “I guess I’ll tell you at lunch.” Neither said much after that for they split apart in two different directions. Neither of them had any classes together, which really stunk but they still sat at lunch with each other and rode home together so it was fine.
Not wanting to linger in the hallways, Sam lost no time in slumping into her first period seat and dumping her bag on the side of the chair. Only she, two other students, and the teacher up front occupied the room. Sam put her head on her arms, amazed how the room filled so quickly just before the bell rang. Her classmates were so predictable. It wasn’t until everyone had settled into their seats that her middle-aged, balding teacher turned to them from the chalk board. “Good morning class,” he issued his standard greeting in his all too usual monotonous tone. Sam yawned; another first period nap was well on its way. Until… “Um, Mr. Hawthorne?” Michael was standing in the doorway, Sam’s stomach dropped to the level of her sneakers. “Oh yes. Mr. Noland. That’s right, I almost forgot, you’re schedules changed. Well, there’s an open seat behind Ms. Connors.” Mr. Hawthorne motioned to the seat behind Sam, and she just about died. Trying not to look him in the eye as he passed, Sam barely noticed to note he dropped on her desk. She was certain Mr. Hawthorne didn’t either. Carefully, she unfolded the small piece of notebook paper and her eyes went wide. Scrawled in what she could only describe as an odd, red ink were the words,

I know your secret, you’re not alone

The note kept her awake and alert through the entire first period, despite her teacher’s best efforts and added bonus of a documentary on the history of the Egyptian deserts. Unfortunately, she was more than alert; she was scared and on edge. Someone knew something about her, and that someone was Michael. He was one person who could actually do something with whatever he had on her. When the bell finally rang for lunch, she didn’t wait for Cael like she always did; instead she threw her books in her locker and made straight for the cafeteria making sure she had the note in hand. She spotted him almost immediately, in the same corner he and his creepy friends usually were in. She made a beeline for him, and ignoring the strange looks she was getting from his friends, pulled out the note. “What the hell is this?!” She waved it in front of him, not caring about the sniggers she was getting from a couple kids around him. “I need to talk to you, about something important.” He extended a hand just like at the dance, one which this time she slapped away. She did her best to ignore the kids mocking her as she glared into his black, almost hurt, eyes. “Please, it’s about what happened the night of the dance. You know what I mean.” All traces of what she thought she saw in his eyes were gone. Her eyes went wide, knowing now which secret he was talking about. She was about to bite back a spiteful response, but she grabbed her head as pain throbbed from her temple. He saw her pain and held out a hand gently. She considered him warily, and took it. Almost how it had been at the dance, he guided her along through the hallways almost as if they were floating. He took her past rows of lockers, classrooms, and numerous teachers. None of whom seemed to notice them in the least. Eventually, he got her to the rooftop. There she was with him, alone. She couldn’t help but feel a little blush, before her headache brought her back to earth. It was as bad as the night she’d . . . He dug into his backpack and dug out a bottle of . . . “Here, drink this.” He gave the bottle to her. She turned it over in her hands, curious as to what the contents were. She stared at it long and hard, unsure of whether to trust him or not. She didn’t have time to think for the headache intensified, sending her to her knees. The urge was overtaking her again, and she needed to get away before she did anything. Sam knew it was too late, her hunger was uncontrollable and she already felt the fangs sliding out of her gums. She didn’t see him move, but in a moment Michael was there, his arms around her and lifting the bottle to her mouth. A warm, sweet liquid poured into her mouth, soothing her pain immediately. She moaned silently, her fangs finally finding what they were searching for. She grabbed the water bottle from him and sucked it dry, the blood gone. After a couple seconds, her fangs finally slid back; satisfied for the moment, and how good that felt. Sam sat up, not longer feeling the ache or the hunger that seem insatiable just moments before. Michael sat beside her, saving her the trouble of standing up. “That felt good I bet,” he said, almost reading her thoughts. Blood had spilled down her cheeks and she wiped it away. Reason finally snapped back to her. “How did you-,” Michael held up a hand, stopping her. “It’s best for now to not ask how or why, but know this, you are not alone. I know you’re a vampire.” Sam’s eye went wide, and she tried to get up, to run away, but he grabbed her wrist. “Please, I’m not here to hurt you, I’m here to help.” His eyes made her believe him.
“Oh how cute, it looks like little Michael Noland has finally grown up.” Sam and Michael spun around to face the source of the new voice. “Jacent Wayland, what a surprise.” Michael’s voice had suddenly turned serious. He stood to face him, at the same time helping Sam to her feet. “It’s nice that you’re remembered my name, Michael.” He grinned. “Though Jace is just fine.” Michael’s eyes were filled with such an intense rage; Sam was scared for a moment. “So, I see we’ve found ourselves a little friend.” Sam realized Jace was staring right at her and she shrunk back. Michael put a hand out in front of her, as if to protect her; though Sam didn’t see the danger. “You Black-Rose scum will never lay a hand on her,” Michael said firmly, Sam wondered what he meant. “Oh really now? Would you care to place a wager on that?” Her grinned slyly and took a daring step towards them. Sam could feel herself shaking, unsure of what part of him made him so menacing. Jace stopped dead as something in his pocket rang. In one swift movement, he drew a silver cell phone out and flipped it open. For a second, tension crackled in the air. “Yes, she’s here. Got it.” He flipped it back, sticking it in his pocket again. “It looks like I’ll have to take a rain check on your wager, Noland. As for you my dear, we will meet again in the near future.” He blew a kiss towards Sam and disappeared in a swirl of black mist.
