She shook her head, "A week? That's it...good lord after that she'll be right back to where she was. But I appreciate the effort."
Indeed it was hopeless to try and get Jelena to follow any kind of system. It just didn't seem to make sense to her to put things in a special file when she could stick them in one big one. Obviously she dind't mind taking three hours to go through a massive amount of papers looking for the one seh wanted.
"Is that all you needed James?"

"that's all I needed."
And he let her back into the office, and sat in a seat, and began reading through the biology books and courses he'd gotten to get his degree. damn it was good to have a partially computerized brain for this. stored information that never got lost or misplaced in your brain. all in neat accessable files. it was like having a uncatchable cheatsheet.

The hysteria was gone and DJ had finally had his senses back enough to throw on some sweats and tshirt to finally get something to eat. He didn't know what had happened in the last eight hours after the call from Jacklyn. It was all a blur. But as he was about to leave his room he saw the walls scratched up and his knife stuck up in the ceiling. He shrugged the thought from his mind and locked his door, making his way downstairs to the small tiny mailboxes. It had been the night before Lillia came for her final night since he had checked his mail. It was probably cluttered with bills, junk, and some magazines. But now was not the time, "It's time to eat!" his stomach said as it growled angrily at him for not putting anything in his body but liquor in quite a while.
As DJ stepped into the cold morning air, he found out that not everything in his life was completely destroyed. His favorite bagel shop was still there and eagerly he went up to the window and ordered his chedder bagel, cream cheese, and some orange juice. Absentmindely he grabbed the closest newspaper near him as he walked to table and sat down.
Halfway through his bagel, he finally glanced at the newspaper's headline.
"Mysteries at ECHO Revealed!"
The feeling of dread crept into his stomach, making the bagel and cream cheese in his mouth taste sour. Forcing himself to swallow and not throw up, he gulped down the rest of his orange juice and quickly scanned the paper.
"...Lillia Nikko (assistant to Dr. Jelena Trevale)..."
"...myths recreated..."
"...variants become pets..."
The article went on about the purpose of Project Echo and the many things Dr. Trevale was currently working on. It also chronicled the equipment on the ships and how much of the citizen's tax money was being spent to allow "one woman's ability to play with animals that shouldn't exist...." It went on to explain a bit about the process of an Echo's birth and then an overview of the other projects including a hint about Lazarus and promising it was a developing story.
Dj skipped to the end until he saw if they respected his wishes about his pen name.
"Jacob Daniels." Well it wasn't the best one out of his list of names but it wasn't much choice either. He remembered giving each publisher a list of names to choose from, and each article was a bit differnt from the rest, so if two names matched up, then it would be logical that he might've given the story to two papers.
The dread still hung in his stomach, but soon passed as he chewed on the last bits of his bagel. Back at the apartment he opened up his mail box and found that it wasn't cluttered at all, but had four envelopes, each with differnt newspaper insignia. He held each envelope to the light and saw two slips of paper.
"Maybe I can go on a vacation with this... Yeah, a vacation sounds really nice." Shoving the envelopes in his pockets he trudged up the stairs, while thinking about visiting Hawaii for a few months.

Lillia sat back down adn started writing again, checking reports, double checking stats, filing, organizing. At first glance her desk was a complete and total mess. Papers were strewn from one end of it to another burying more papers and folders.
Sticky notes were spread out, looking like they had been haphazardly placed, folders were open, closed and some on the floor. Pens, paper clips, a stapler half buried under a file. It almost looked like she was making Jelena's mess even worse. But she wasn't. She knew where everything was at this moment in time and she was seperating out teh different papers to go in their respective files.
Lillia herself had her head bent over a file and was scanning page after page after page, every once in a while she'd reach out until she found a pen, make some marks and toss it back down. Sometimes she grabbed a sticky and slapped it on a document and other times she just sat there, staring straight ahead. Her mind was a constant blur of motion, categorizing, memorizing and organizing everything she looked at.

"How's it coming?"
James looked up from his books and papers and files, grinning lightly at teh apparently far more massive mess..but he knew that's how it got when you were rearranging someone else's mess into a decent organization.
"The task hasn't frightened your brain into shutdown, has it?"
As this was one of those times she was just staring into space.

She stared for about a minute more, then mumbled something and bent her head to scribble another thing down. Then she looked back at James.
Grinning she said, "No, this is a piece of cake. It's just a lot of stuff to go through and she didn't even try to keep any of it organized..."
She surveyed the mess she had made and stretched rolling her shoulders and massaged her neck. "I think I need a break though." She reached down and picked up her laptop, then proceeded to email DJ and let him know that she had gotten up in space safely and that she was thinking about him all the time. She told him how much she loved and missed him and that she'd try and keep in touch as best she could. She sighed softly and shook her head, finally sending the email.
When she had finished she looked over at James and raised an eyebrow, "What are you doing, James? Did Jellie con you into doing her research or mine?"

"Working on a biology degree. According to Jelena, if I want to continue working like I have been with the Echo Project, I need to get some degrees in order to 'validate' my involvement with Raidiance. Shouldn't take but a week maybe, as having my brain part computer makes me have a real good memory for testing and the like."
A small grin.
"What? didn't think I had that kind of brainpower? I got a Bachlors in Bioengineering and a Masters in Advanced robotics."

Lillia's mouth dropped open and then she glared at him. "Well I no longer feel any sympathy towards you. I had to go through four years to get my Master's. And here you come along and get it in a week's time. It's just not fair." She remembered dealing with professors and tests and papers and just shook her head.
Then she completely destroyed that statement when she said, "If you run into any snags and need some help I'll be happy to help you out." A quick smile, "So you'll be here permanantly then, hmm? It's not because of Jellie is it? I mean," she said quickly, "I am happy to have you here...but it's got to be for you, not to see her. You know what I mean...?"

"Hey I got my master and bachleor the old fashioned way. and yes, I know it's for me. be honest, Project Meta is just a bioware fixing facility nowadays. unpgrades for those that have them already, and making sure they work and we stay functioning. My only real job there anymore is making sure rennell and roselyn make thier appointments. It makes me feel useful again to have something to do anymore."
a small grin.
"I'll be sure to ask you if anything comes up I need help with."

She nodded, "Then I'm glad you took an interest in something else. Echo fascinates me but then most scientific things do. Echo just happened to be a perfect mix with my love of genetics and animals."
She laughed softly, "Not to mention all the fairy tales I once held so dear and wished would come true. The legends and such I read as a child..."

"Fairy tales and legends don't concern me all that much. What I am interested in them for is simply the process of the creation of unique life. The advancement of her abilities, and the creation of more potent Echoes."
A small grin.
"I have already been developing an interest in crossbreeding them. And of course, through certian echoes, advancement of other fields of study. for example, the regernation trait of a hydra or dragon might work equally well in a human being if it is something that can be cross generated and given to already created and grown echoes."

"This is true. But it's not likely that the government will be willing to use anything we discover up here. They're really letting Jellie go on a whim. Can you imagine the kind of upheaval it would cause if the people on Earth found out that procedures being used on them were tested on creatures that shouldn't exist in the first place?"
It would be bedlam. She shook her head and said, "It's amazing what you can do when you splice the genes, and then looking at what might be a recessive trait and making it a dominant one, that just never ceases to amaze me. We could do so much good for the world if we could just show them how far we've come."

"And whom said we had to be government sactioned? Once this gets firmly establish as oto what we can do, I'd offer it to fleet personel first, then have a display on Raidiance for visitors, or people who may wish to stay here in space on Raidiance. IF the government doesn't like it..well they'll just have to try and stop it. And getting past my special defenses is no easy task, let me assure you."

She stared at him for a moment, "Everythign goes through teh government...but if you can find a way around them than that would be fantastic."
It started to take root in her mind, there was a lot that people could benefit from with their research and if James could remove all the roadblocks, life would be fantastic.
"Can you really do that? Keep them out...?"

"I can give them a serious run for thier money. I'm ex-special forces. I know what the best of the best can do. It won't come to that though I'm sure."
Or at least it better not.
"I want to be able to help people and since the demilitarization of teh Fleet, the lack of currency, we for the most part live free of teh governments involvement anyway. the only hold the government really has is legislative, laws and policies. And as long as nothing incites massive riots or anything, they tend to leave us alone. So I suspect if we made some of this technology available, and showed it's promise, they'd be more willing to approve it. we'd probably have to give credit to someone other then Jelena, but that's a minro technicality."
