How about something along the lines of you running into Akura by chance one day as you were escaping the soul society? Feeling enraged at him for simply being a shinigami, you lashed out and attacked him in a blood rage. The two of you fighting for what seemed like days to the point of Akura wining by simple chance as your hollow mask shattered (Or it could even be a draw...). Upon which Akura offered you refuge and free room and board. But, in return you had to become an "employee" (More like a partner in arms...) at his new candy store?
Or something like that...
Just brainstorming here.
