☆═━Maeza Lee━═☆

Maeza's smile quickly faded as she listened to Kenton's brief story. She couldn't imagine such a life, one where one knew only the military. It was so sad. But then again, so was her own story. "Around here, there's not really that much. You can walk around the grounds if you want. The student lounge has a few games. There's a town nearby to go to, but you need an adult...or a secret passage," she added. She fell silent for a few moments before speaking again. "When I was younger I almost died because I barely made it back inside before the sun rose. After that my parents kept be tucked away inside, even at night. I could sit at a window for the moonlight, but it wasn't the same. After a few years, I heard whispered among the guards about how the people talked about the 'Mad Princess' who had to be kept locked away because she was insane and couldn't do anything...I ran away last year and came here. I plan to return after I graduate."

"Hm. Perhaps I shall make a point of visiting the city soon, then." Kenton watched Maeza's eyes as she spoke. They were gentle and kind, not at all in keeping with what she said next. Her own story was no more joyful than his own.

"I apologize that you have had it so rough," he said seriously. "I lost my mother when I was born, and so I have grown up knowing my kind's prince and princess. They are good people, but very heavily burdened. I think that few people realize how difficult it is to be a royal descendant. The pressure is immense, and I do not envy you for it. The last thing you or any child needs is an imposition such as that."

He crossed his arms. "At the very least, I hope that your people will be pleased on your return to have such a madly intelligent ruler," he said, immediately regretting trying to make her laugh. Most of his attempts at humour at home fell sadly flat even among those he called friends.

Robert nodded as he listened, truly interested and relieved to hear about the infirmary. He hoped nothing would happen, but you couldn't be too careful. He only smiled more as the young Sister stumbled on about her hair. He winked and replied, "The kindest of compliments from the kindest of people. To tell you the truth, I do have a few gray hairs. I'm just to vain to let them show, so I dye them."

Sister Eleanor cleared her throat, smiling awkwardly. Ohhh dear. I haven't made a complete mess of this yet.

She went a little pink as Rob winked at her. Such gestures were few and far between in the sterile white environment of her infirmary, but then again... Most of her patients tended to be around ten years younger than she. She chuckled when Rob mentioned his vanity.

"Oh, you have nothing to worry about," she said, loosening up a bit. "I'm sure any special ladies in your life don't even notice once you break out that smile."
But in the end, our choices make us.

Chris walked into the Dining Hall and instinctively sniffed around. He recognized the scents of Tom, the small girl from the library and Kenton. He walked over to Tom and the group he was conversing with, "Hey man. Well, can this punk clean up or what?" he said chuckling.

Prince Isildur of Astarot
User Image
Isildur hadn't left his room since he had arrived back at the school. This snake was very much afraid to come out of his burrow. Wilthow was coiled around her Master's neck. He was still rather wary of this place. He remembered quite well what happened here. Izma was one of the first to die. A shard of glass went right through her jugular vein and killed her in minutes. Isildur's fight or flight mode kicked in and he ended up escaped with Wilthow through the pipes and through the woods undetected.

A coward he may be, but being the only heir to his throne, he wasn't about to be a hero any time soon. He noticed Tom and Sherlock. There were new faces all around, but he wasn't particularly that eager to get to know them.

The sound of chatter reached Levy's keen ears as she made her way back to the Dining Hall. It appeared that the number of people in the room had increased since she last left, but that was to be expected with the welcoming banquet beginning so soon. The princess realized that the meal she had shared with Vincent only a while ago would have been better served now. However, there was nothing she could do about it now. The junior strode in, her scarlet eyes scanning the room for someone to sit with while she waited for Vincent, yet she could find no familiar faces. Where the hell was everyone? Levy sighed softly as she remained standing. It appeared to her that just about everyone was already in conversation, so it would be rude of her to interrupt. When is this thing going to start?

Mathieu made his way to the doors of the dining hall, staring at the ground as he went. Evening dew was beginning to sparkle on the grass, and a pleasantly cool breeze flowed through the grounds, but all he could feel was the fire and blood, seeing the dead lined up and counted, the one he cared for the most among them. How long would it take to see the grass and feel the breeze as it was, without the outlines of death and despair? Years, perhaps? He had no illusion of high hopes.

He heard muffled mumbling up ahead. "Hm?" Slightly off to one side of the doors sat a girl, apparently panicking. Frowning, Mathieu crouched boyishly beside her, trying to place her face. She was unfamiliar, probably new. Certainly young. A new freshman?

"Princess?" he guessed, kneeling down on the concrete to speak with her at eye level. "Milady, I'm Monsieur Marrouf, is everything all right?" he asked.

In truth, he knew the signs. He'd battled with social anxiety for years before meeting Mireille and coming to the Academy. It was a downward spiral that started so small, so innocuously, and sucked down into a black hole of nothing. "Would you like a glass of water?" he asked, tucking his feet beneath him and sitting cross-legged in front of the princess. "I'd be happy to fetch it for you."

Tom looked up, immediately confused as he tried to figure out who was speaking to him. "Holy s**t, what'd you do?" he blurted out, suppressing a laugh. "Hey!"

He stood up, seizing Chris by the arm and dragging him a few places down the table, away from Haidee, Viola, Sherlock, and Cosmo. "We're not going back there," he hissed seriously. "Keep me busy and away from those girls or I swear I'm gonna kill something."

Tom sat back down, his hands miming an interesting conversation with Chris. "Dark one's my fiancée Viola," he explained, pretending to laugh at an imaginary joke. "Tiny one Cosmo's a blabbermouth and he's too damn cute, use him as a wingman and girls'll flock to you. Tall guy's Sherlock, my roommate last year, and the little girl's called Haidee and she's ruining my life by talking to Viola," he summed up. He nodded to the pair across the room, Maeza and Kenton. "Meanwhile I am watching this jackass chat up my ex when I told him not to and I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to get you involved in this."

His tone had changed from malevolent to sincerely apologetic with that last statement. Tom pinched his brow, groaning. "It's been a bad day, ignore me," he said with a sigh. "You look great."

Galaxy rushed into the room, surveying the room for Haidee. She was what she thought of as fashionably late. Oh, shoot! It was so crowded, Galaxy couldn't find Haidee! Galaxy, a bit sad now that she was late, sat at a table away from people.Well, she thought to herself while drinking her soymilk, At least I might meet new people tonight.

He walked in and quickly took a seat at an empty table., He didn't know many people here, but oh well. He liked being alone when he was this late. After all, he did sleep in so late it was now time for dinner.

He walked in the place quietly. He was a little nervous, as this was his first semi-formal event. In a white button shirt and tan pants, Ashe found a table and sat down next to a hooded guy. He looked a little upset, so Ashe didn't talk to him.

Haidee frowned in disappointment as someone came and stole Tom away. Boo.

"Well, at least now we've got some girl time," she said cheerily. "And tiny boy," she added, bopping the head of the tiny prince who was braiding her hair.

She looked around, sensing an awkward tension at the table. Spying Galaxy away from the crowd immediately lightened her mood. "Ah! Galaxy! Come here, sweetest!" She beamed, waving to her roommate. "My roommate this year, Princess Galaxy," she explained to Viola and Cosmo. "Darling girl, very cute. Galaxy, come meet Viola and Cosmo!"

Sister Eleanor flagged Ashe down, trying her best not to ignore Rob. "Mr. Harrison!"

She got up to fetch him, gently tapping his shoulder. "You're staff, not student. Come sit up with Rob and me while we wait for everyone else."

Eleanor returned to her spot, saving a chair and counting. Three in... that left four staff members still to arrive if her count was correct.

"Ekk!" The noise had escaped October against her will, and immediately made her throw her hands over her mouth. When she had found the courage to raise her head, she stared into a soft, yet masculine face. Staff, not student, some part of her brain registered. But the longer she stared at his face, and listened to his kind words, she began to relax. He wasn't royal. His actions were normal, just like her. Somewhere along the line, her mouth had formed into a small o of awe. "You're very handsome...," she said softly, mostly to herself. But as soon as she realized she spoke the words, she covered her mouth with her hands. Did I just say that?

After letting the shock pass, she slowly lowered her hands. "Please call me October, Monsieur," she said softly. Embarrassed as she was, she still kept eye contact with her... History teacher? She wasn't sure what he taught. "See... I can't go in there. Everyone in their was born with royal blood and I... I'm just a normal girl who wasn't able to play princess until I was 11," she said as she looked at her hands. "I'm okay, I don't need water, thank you though. I'm just... I'm scared. To them I'm a peasant or a fake, someone who isn't really a princess or fit to inherit the throne," oh why was she telling her teacher this! He wouldn't care. She was just a 16 year old girl, going on 17, who was probably half his age. He wasn't her father or mother so he didn't have to care. Taking a deep breath, she raised her eyes back to the man who sat crossed leg in front of her. "I'm terribly sorry, I should get up and just be brave. The princess me can...," she mumbled to herself and looked away again.

Mathieu watched her carefully and smiled politely, pretending not to hear her smaller whispers. At least she was talking. "Well, Miss October," he said, "no one gets this far who doesn't deserve it. And I rather think you're missing the point."

He rested his elbows on his knees, peering down into her face. "You'd be surprised at some of the students you'll meet tonight. A lot of them certainly act like peasants," he said darkly. He shook his head. Now was not the time for that. "It takes a lot more than blood to make a true royal, Miss October. I think you're rather like me. Not born into it," he said. "Just someone who had a title given to them like a present."

He leaned forward. "The kids in there make me nervous, too. Every year," he confessed. "I'm not royalty, I'm just a man. And maybe you're just a girl, but if you ask me, that makes us better. Do you know why?"

Mathieu beamed at her. "They were born into it, their families and their kingdoms and their people are stuck with them. We're better because we were chosen for it."

He stood up, brushing the dust off his pants. "Now. What do you say we be brave together and get in there?" he asked, offering her his hand.

Like a present, she thought. "A present given to me. A present so powerful that they thought no one else in the world deserved," she said softly. Then, she looked up at the elder man and smiled happily. "When you put it that way, it makes sense. We're special because we were not born in to that life, but because we were chosen for it," it was exactly what he had said, but saying it herself gave her more confidence. Enough confidence that she could stand up and walk into a room knowing that even if she was just a girl who was born into a normal life, that she was here because she had been chosen to lead her kingdom and because she had the ability to be on par with the kids here who were royal-born.

Smiling at the man, she wished there was a way to give her thanks. And so instead, she took his hand as he pulled her up. "We can do this. Be nervous together," she said as she brushed off her rear for any dirt. Then, letting go of his hand, she pulled up her hood to cover her black hair. "I am ready to brave this storm if you are, Monsieur Marrouf," she said giving him a big happy smile. She could do this. She could make friends.

Mathieu nodded as he helped the princess to her feet. "All right, then. Allons-y."

He pushed open the door, the warmth of the fire and the low tones of chatter bubbling out. It was a familiar sensation, returning to the dining hall, and yet one that felt empty. Turning back to October, he bowed to her, allowing her in first. "Enjoy your supper," he said, straightening up and flashing her a grin. "You'll be fine. I promise."

Adjusting the wings on his collar, Mathieu looked around the hall and up to the staff table. It seemed people were still filtering in. The Academy wasn't really known for punctuality, was it? He climbed the two steps up to the staff table, sitting beside Rob. "Evening," he said, scooting his chair forward and leaning into the table to wave past Rob to Eleanor and Ashe. "Have I missed anything?"

"Not really," said Eleanor. "Still waiting on the rest of staff. I wonder if they're caught up with something."

"Maybe. We can page them if it gets too late," Mathieu said. "These handhelds are pretty nifty, aren't they? Good call."

"Just trying to cut out the hassle of having to address the whole school when something happens," the nurse said, her face darkening. "For if I know anything about this place, it's that something will happen."
