"Of... of course!" A new sense of energy filled him. It felt so familiar, but it seemd liked a long lost friend. There's a word for this...

Without thinking he reached into his backpocket and pulled out his small notebook and his pencil tucked away behind his ear and poised ready to take notes. He caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror behind the bartable and saw how stupid he looked. He put the notepad down and laughed sheepishly.

"Sorry, an hold habit of mine. But please tell me, any help would be great!"

Ah, I remember the feeling. The feeling of inspiration...

She smiled, he was hers. Then she ran a hand through her blonde hair and laid her other hand over his. "I'm going to give you the key to the fame and fortune you so desperately crave. You will become somebody, not just be a nobody writer for a newspaper that doesn't understand your talent."

She reached down into teh shoulder bag on teh floor at her feet and withdrew a stack of papers. Setting it in front of him she said softly, "These are the key. There is no going back now Daniel. Take these documents and tell me what you see."

They contained top secret information on the Echo Project. Things that only people in very high places were privy too. The complete layout of teh ship. A complete printout of James, one of the Project Metamorphasis. Everything about him was on taht sheet, all of his updates and all of his specialties. Secret information about the Echos themselves. It was a leak to the press and she was providing it. Things no one should be able to get ahold of. She handed them to him. With them he could write a story that would get Echo shut down. The fact Rosy existed and the things in there would incite a public riot. Enough of a riot that the government would be forced to act. And when they did Echo would be no more and finally Jacklyn would get her funding back and her daughter would be back home permanantly. Everything hinged on his answer though. She waited, bated breath to see what he would do.

It was breathtaking to see how much information there was just stacked in front of him. From the few pages alone he could've written a full article and handed to ANY newspaper and get paid big bucks for it. But he also knew that Lillia worked for this place and if he did expose it to the world, it would mean making her lose her job, no not her job, her lifestyle and and all her friends up there. The adrenaline in his body pumped harder than ever however which was telling him to seize the chance while it was still there ready for him.

But his feelings caught this rush and told him to slow down and think. He gave the pile of papers a slight push away from him. "Do you know what you're going to do to your daughter Mrs... Jacklyn? This would destroy her lifestyle wouldn't it? Do you have a grudge against your daughter just because she spent the night over at my apartment? I'm no fool, I can see straight through your plan. Thinking you can help me make it big, but you're just gonna use me arent you." His tequila sunrise was placed in front of him finally and before he knew what he was doing, gulped it down. This night is not gonna turn out well, stupid gut instincts...

Jacklyn raised an eyebrow, "Heavens no. I have no grudge against my daughter and yes I'm fully aware of the impact it is going to have upon her. Her reputation is being slandered horribly while she is up in space and going on with this project." She looked at him for a moment and sighed.

"You see my daughter is beign massacred in teh news. I made a stupid comment that her father had a heart attack after she went to take this new job. People speak so harshly of that Dr. Trevale adn this is her boss. Dr. Trevale is going to be massacred and Lillia is going to lose everything right beside her. I am merely trying to save her from all of that. If Echo is shut down then she will be able to return to her normal lifestyle and her reputation can be repaired."

She looked at him and said matter of factly, "She may be upset at first but in the end she will understand that what has been done is in her best interest. Please help me Daniel. Write this story for me so I can get my baby girl back where she belongs."

Her voice turned to pleading and she grabbed his hand as she said it then tapped the pile of papers. "It will set you apart and help me out. You know what you can get for the stories you can write with that information. Please, I'm desperate. Help me out."

"Sonuva..." he sat back down and ran his hands through his hair. There is no possibly that Lillia will like this. And knowing parents, they will do anything to have their way. But... but this opportunity, it won't ever come up again! And Lillia, I can always meet another like her can't I?

He stopped quickly, How can I say that? "Meet another like her," she isn't some kind of common type of person. When was the last time a girl actually talked to you freely and enjoyed it and conversed back? When was the last time you had kissed someone so passionately DJ? When was the last time you even felt like this toward someone?

But...

No buts, this is the first time you've ever met someone like her, and admit it, you've probably fallen in love with her!

This is a career that I can start and establish. A lover would only interfere. My past with women have alreay proven that.

But...

No buts from you...

DJ looked at the stack of papers. He had to do it. Career is always much more important than women at the moment. And besides, the last time he loved someone and thought they loved him back, it ended up that the girl was just using you for your position of popularity in college. The time before was a rebound and the time before that it was a dare. Women get in the way. Thats that.

"Alright Jacklyn, I'll do it. But not for your, or for myself. You better hope to God that your daughter doesn't hate you for all eternity for this." He saw that his drink had been refilled and downed it in a gulp again. He read a few lines and looked at her.

"Anything else you want me to do?" His voice was icy and had a bit of contempt in it, but he knew that she wouldn't care as long as he destroyed the one thing that Lillia ever cared for.
PostPosted: Sat Sep 17, 2005 11:52 pm

Inwardly she smiled. His contempt and his feelings mattered nothing to her. She was going to win. The victory was close at hand and she resisted the urge to wave her fist in teh air.

"My daughter's feelings for me have no basis in this. Children always hate their parents when they don't agree with what is best, but parents know and in the end the children realize that their parents did know what was best. I have faith my daughter will do the same."

She finished her drink and stood, "No Daniel. That is all I require from you. Write the story and then call this number. Ask for Stan and tell him that Jacklyn refers you. He'll give you a good price for the story. Do a good job and you'll be made. By the way Daniel, Lillia never intended to stay on Earth. She's going back to space and when she does she will forget all about you. Keep that in mind if you allow your feelings to get in the way."

And with that she nodded to him, "If you have any questions don't hesitate to call. I beleive you have my number." And she breezed out of the bar.

The thought had never occured to him. She was going to leave him, she would leave him and go back up to space and never see him again. So there really was no reason why he shouldn't.

But if you destory her life, she'll hate you. Even though she'll be on Earth again, she'll never talk to you.

DJ sat there and thought for a bit and suddenly it hit him. A pen name! He could hide himself and she'll never know. She trusts him doesn't she? So it has to work.

Taking the number in his hands he watched Jacklyn leave the bar. He shoved the piece of paper into his pocket, only to find the other one except on a new sheet of paper. It was already an offer for the info he knew about Project Echo, but even though it was a few weeks old, the price stayed the same and the editor constantly begged him for it. Now he had such a large resource that he would possibly be able to publish a lot of info to much more newspapers. Wouldn't that be the utilitarian thing to do?

But the thought of Lillia returned. Suddenly he had doubts again. He'd have to sleep on this. He gathered up the papers, but finding he couldn't take it without having some sheets blow away he asked the bartender for a bag and shoved them all in there. Paying for his drink, (and kindly paying the bill Jacklyn forgot to pay) he rushed home and began his research. His notepad wouldn't be big enough for him to jote down on, but his computer will be.

It was days later before DJ saw the light of day again.

James sat down, and glanced between Erik and Jelena. Then he shook his head lightly with a hint of a smile watching them both, before his thoughts drifted to teh email he'd recieved. That certainly wiped the smile off his face. Somethign was in the works...someone was pushing someplace. he'd had one of his surviving buddies try and dig up information on whom might be messing in teh Fleet systems, and so far things kept pointing to someone higher on the military food chain.

Which narrowed down the leak that gave out his secondary system specs to three people. one that was for all sakes and purposes crippled for the rest of his life, and the other two..one worked in Area 51, the other was a Army general. none of the three would be someone you'd want to butt heads with.

"So what's next on the agenda? want me to go out and get dessert?"

At this point, Erik was poking at Jelena's food, seeing as he finished his and she was fending him off with a good jab or two of her fork. Take that Mr. Donner. And she swiveled in her chair so that her back was to Erik and thus her remaining food safe, which she intended to make disappear. Jelena had been watching James, noticing the smile leave his face but then he went into normal questions. "I'm not one for desserts really. And don't say donuts count, that's a breakfast food."

"You need more sugar in your diet you crazy thing." Erik set down his container and fork on a pile on her desk. "Thanks for dinner James, but unlike her I am going to grab some dessert. Can't help it if I'm a sucker for chocolate cake." He turned, walking away but called over his shoulder. "And Trevy, Project is done fro the night, go ahead and lock it all down." With that Erik went to go raid the place of chocolate cake.

Meanwhile Jelena had finished her own dinner, placing her own things right next to Erik's on the desk. And her look turned to James. "You really are a sweet man, did you know that?"

"Maybe it's just making up for being a soldier. in essence a paid killer."

A small chuckle, and a shake of his head.

"But, how are you feeling? Arm feeling any better at all? less sore maybe?"

And he got himself up, walked over to her, ran a hand lightly through her hair a bit and gave her a kiss.

"Now lets lock down the project, and me and you can do something, or maybe just go and enjoy eachothers company someplace. You are supposed to be taking the day off anyway."

"Your glass always seems half empty when you talk of such things. Really." Jelena only smiled at his little show of affection, rather finding that she enjoyed the casual touches and the like. Always took her mind off things too. Then again she hadn't really connected with a human being on an emotional level in quite some time. Cruel was the life of the devoted scientist.

"Actually I think I am...either that or I'm just not focusing on the pain and therefore it isn't bothering me. Ah the human mind." Pushing up from her chair she walked over to the panel on the wall, bringing up the control panel that had the power to lock down the whole place. Which in an easy series of fluid motions she was doing so, changing locks and barring access and the like. Typical Project lock down. "So then, what do you propose, James Moira?"

How about I take you to your room, we have some small talk, and then we make noise enough to keep Erik up all night."

A slight grin, and then a shrug of his shoulders.

"Whatever you feel comfortable doing, Jelena. I'm open to suggestions."

"How about small talk, maybe a drink or two and no enough noise making to keep Erik up all night." A point to her shoulder. "I thought we discussed this already today? The again...you're a man you forget things and your mind can go into one track mode easily." How did she just state that all so easily? "Besides, I don't need to keep you up too long, I'm sure Metamorphosis and Catalyst would have my head."

"Works for me. small talk and a few drinks. Are we heading to Radiance then? or do you have a private stash someplace?"

Then a smirk.

"As for discusing that, yes I remember. the noise was supposed to just annoy him. you've never done that before? faking sex real loud just to aggravate someone?"

Striding over to a cabinet on the far wall she gestured to it. "Looks like a cabinet," then she opened said cabinet, " Is really a mini fridge...mostly stocked with alcohol...and ew, what's that? Oh gross...how old is that? Erick no doubt."

Shaking her head she looked to him and once again gestured. "Well, pick your poison, mix your own, whatever you wish." Then she shifted her weight to one leg and rested her hand on her hip. "No I haven't...I really don't see the point in it other than people wanting to ask too many questions later on. College is a wonderful learning tool but I don't want to use it ever again."
