Are there set artifacts that you have to hunt for or can you hunt for anything?
I am just asking this in general for any artifact hunt so anyone could answer and tell me.

Basically what I am asking is are there a set number of artifacts and you can only get them, or are you allowed to make up your own artifacts to quest for as a group?
or do you use some other system?

You can make up your own artifacts and have people hunt for them, sure.

I was never sure about that. I guess maybe I will have to just make an artifact ever once and a while then, to give someone something to do, if the are interested.

My D&D book has a shitload of tables that make for a whole lot of random stuff.
Hooray for glamered fullplate and throwing/returning greatswords.
