I... "when did things change? when did this stop being a game?"

The blue-haired girl’s words hit a note that made Nox chuckle a bit within. Perhaps it would be good for one to take into consideration their own advice that they were doling out. When she accepted his hand, it gave the raven-haired youth an almost reassuring feeling. Across this virtual network of electronic signals and data, there were two people a great distance apart. Yet here they were, exchanging a friendly gesture, and they felt it. Her hand was there in his hand, and it felt so real. It was soft and light. Airy to the touch, but still existent. There was a slight bit of fascination that held in Nox’s mind about this simple concept. After they released hands, Nox didn’t particularly have anything to say. He kind of simply just stood there… He probably made things awkward. Though, he piqued up when Hotaru finally spoke up. She mentioned someone calling for him. Oh, he was quite aware. Honestly, he knew, and he just didn’t know how to deal with such a thing. Maybe it seemed like he was trying to avoid the girl that was calling after him. This wasn’t necessarily the case, but it wasn’t entirely opposite either. It was a strangely paradoxical situation that Nox just couldn’t completely justify in words. “…maybe you should check that out?” It was something that he thought about. The boy closed his eyes for a bit and pondered it. He already ran away from her. He hoped that the girl didn’t think lesser of him now because of it. This was a cause for concern, slightly. Maybe it would be best to go find her. But at this thought, the counterpoint arrived in his mind. He had run off away from her. Maybe she was mad at him. Heck, Nox could hardly deal with people in general. Dealing with the fury of a girl’s fury was something that made his head hurt just thinking about it. He shook his head lightly, ruffling his black hair under his hood. No. It was probably best to leave her be for now. "I think I’ll find her later. I’ll owe her an apology, and I think I’d better have some time to think of one… ha… heh…” It was still very early into the game’s start. There would be plenty of time to meet up with her later. Next time, he wouldn’t play the foolish boy; he’d make it up to the acquaintance of his. “Um… it was nice meeting you though. I don’t want to hold you up much longer, so I’ll be on my way. Oh! Um…” The boy quickly swiped down his right hand, opening up his menu. He scrolled through, reading the options and finally found what he was searching for. After a few clicks and pings, he sent the girl before him, Hotaru, a friend request. A window would pop up for her, on whether or not she would accept or deny it. It was good to make friends, or so said the entirety of the rest of the world. Maybe they could meet up again at some point. Very quickly, he smiled. “Okay, well… goodbye then, haha.” He waved curtly and began walking off. It was… an odd first impression, no less. And maybe she thought that he was kind of just weird. Oh well. Maybe it wasn’t the best of goodbyes, but it was probably the best that Nox could do… sadly…
He would start making his way out of town. This bustling city of brick and stone had a bright atmosphere, but he needed to begin his trek. He broke off at a quick pace, and then started running. His cloak waved behind him and his hood many times almost slipped off his head. He nearly even toppled some NPC’s accidently on his way out, but once he left the city’s edge and the sounds and BGM of the Town of Beginnings started fading away, Nox broke into a sprint. He didn’t quite know when he’d be back. Actually, it probably should have been smarter to stock up on supplies, but he’d make do. It’d toughen up his adventurer’s spirit anyway, he reasoned. A new, soft background music began playing, befitting the natural expanse of land that opened up before him. Nox was ready to truly begin his explorations in Aincrad.

~~~~~~~Koyuki~~~~~~~~
Treasure Hunting Thief
User Image
As Koyuki continued his exploration of the town, his disbelief continued to rise, but at the same time he began to believe it more and more. Excitement clouded his minds true feelings for now, but he continued to travel. After about fifteen minutes of exploring the town, Koyuki came across a bulletin board that struck his attention. "Player basics for dummies." Koyuki read the sign out loud. He couldn't help but chuckle softly after he read it. Looks like he was going to be the dummy that needed the sign. After reading a bit, Koyuki discovered that there was a player menu. Koyuki would face palm after reading it. It was so simple, and he probably would have known about all this stuff had he read the manual that came with the game. Turning around, Koyuki raised his right hand and extended his index and middle finger, and brought it down in a sliding motion. To his surprise, the player menu showed up, even though he just read that it would happen.
After going through the menu, Koyuki familiarized himself with everything basic, the inventory, the character screen, the abilities list, things like that. Then, something caught his eye. During his navigation of the menus, a sudden exclamation mark popped up next to an icon he hadn't gone through. After opening the menu, Koyuki discovered that it was the quest menu. After gonig through the list of available quests for his level, Koyuki would set his eyes on the 'Get The Papers' quest. It was a quest from a local NPC, so Koyuki made his way over to the location. Once there, Koyuki started the conversation with the NPc to get the quest, and another pinging sound went off. Koyuki had officially accepted the quest. Sighing a bit and patted himself on the face. "This is it Koyuki! This is your first step to becoming a famous treasure hunting thief!" Koyuki would talk to himself while gripping his fists tightly and looking to the sky. Koyuki would set off on the quest to look for the thieves.
Treasure Hunting Thief
After Koyuki accepted the quest from the store keeper, a picture of the thief was given along with their gratitude. even if it was an NPC they sure seemed to have a mind of their own, and their conversations seemed so natural, it was amazing. Nothing like all the other MMOs he'd played in the past. The thief looked like your typical thief honestly, which was a bit expected, but a little disappointing. It was the first thing about this game that reminded him about the average MMO's. He'd shrug it off though and begin his search. First Ren started by heading towards the more populated areas and hold the poster out. Koyuki would go from person to person, asking politely if they'd seen anyone matching the description. However, after five minutes of bad luck, Koyuki grunted a bit and opened the player menu by sliding his right hand down. He would then proceed to putting the poster back into the inventory when all of the sudden someone bumped into him. Not sure if it was an accident or not, or whether or not it was Koyuki's fault, he turned around to apologize.
When Koyuki looked up and went after the man, lo and behold it was teh man in the poster. Though Koyuki didn't want to give anything away, he smiled warmly. "I'm sorry sir, I accidentally bumped into you back there." However, after his apology, the man just grunted and brushed Koyuki off. Even if this was an NPC quest monster, his disregard for formalities made Koyuki a bit agitated. Placing a hand on the hilt of the dagger sheathed on his back, Koyuki would zig and zag through the crowds of people and make his way closer to the Thief who looked like it might be aware of Koyuki's movements. It was time to act or loose the chance for good.
Once Koyuki made it close enough, he broke free of his concealment of the crowds and made a run for it. Using a near-by fountain, Koyuki used it to get a leg up and would begin hoping from one person's shoulder to the next, making his way through the crowds more easily. Soon the Thief would notice Koyuki however, it was kind of hard to miss someone jumping from person to person. The thief began to draw his dagger, but Koyuki had already drawn his weapon and made a leap towards him. While in mid-air, he caught the Thief before it could completely draw his weapon and Koyuki managed to fall down on top of it and stab it in the neck. Upon landing, Koyuki made sure to do a somersault so that the shock of the landing wasn't too much, or that he stayed still just in case the attack wasn't strong enough to kill the Thief. Once the roll was over, Koyuki quickly got to his feet and turned around, only to see the thief beginning to stand up as well. "Now for the finishing touches." Koyuki said to himself and he begun to charge his only skill. "Sting." Koyuki muttered and dashed forward quickly before the thief could stand up and landed the piercing attack into the Thief's back. After the attack was done the Thief shattered into tiny pieces of data fragments and a pinging sound appeared. "Congradulations!" Was the message. Following the message was another one, stating that Koyuki had been awarded 1 'Important Paper' and that there were 4 more to go. Koyuki couldn't help but sigh. "You mean there's more than just one of them? Alright then, looks like I have some more work to do." Koyuki would say to himself before sheathing his dagger again.
Koyuki would begin his search all over. However, now he knew better, and set out to search for the remaining four Thieves. 'I hope they're all like that... Being Solo like this I don't know how well I'll fare if I get teamed up on.' Koyuki thought to himself. Little did Koyuki know, that the one thief he just took out was on his way to meet up with another, and the latter Thief laid witness to the assassination of his comrade. As Koyuki continued his search around the city, Koyuki failed to notice that he himself was being followed. He felt like someone was watching him, but there were so many people around, he just chalked it up to the people around him giving him the heeby jeebies. Koyuki was making his way into an alley that would save some time getting to another part of the Town when out of the corner of his eye, he noticed someone that looked familiar. His heart began to race, it was another one of the Thieves! Koyuki now knew his feeling of being watched was because of this next Thief. not sure what else to do, Koyuki continued into the alley when he suddenly heard fast and heavy foot steps behind him, echoing off of the close alley walls.
Instantly Koyuki unsheathed his dagger and held it close to his chest to hide it from the tracker. Looking back, the Thief hadn't made it to the alley yet, so Koyuki dove behind a dumpster and crouched into a kneeling position and waited for his predator. Soon it would be time for Koyuki to strike and fight another Thief to progress the quest. Closing his eyes, Koyuki focused on the sounds. The running footsteps stopped, and Koyuki could hear a verbal grunt of confusion, which he couldn't help but smirk at. It looked like his plan was going to work. The Thief's footsteps began to move again, but they were slower than before, almost cautious. This one was ready and aware. Koyuki could then hear the sound of a dagger unsheathing from it's leather purse, and knew the Thief was ready for a surprise, just like Koyuki was. This fight would be fun. It'd be in close quarters and they were both on edge and ready.
'Five... Six... Seven.. eight... Nine...' Koyuki would count the steps until the Thief's foot steps were close enough for his surprise attack. 'TEN!' Koyuki would shout in his mind and he pushed himself out of his cover. The Thief was expecting the sneak attack, but never the less was caught off guard at te sudden and quick appearance of his prey, and stepped backwards to ready himself, but Koyuki had prepared himself the entire time and was ready. Rolling towards the Thief, Koyuki would swing his dagger and slash across the Thief's inner thigh. A red line appeared on the leg and the Thief roared in pain, but instantly kicked Koyuki in the ribs, sending him flying. "Argh!" Koyuki called out as he rolled backwards. timing the roll, Koyuki hopped up onto his feet, but he was crouched down and when he looked up the Thief was almost on him. The pain was so real! However, Koyuki pushed through. When the Thief began it's next attack, it would raise the dagger up and prepare to slash it downward at Koyuki, but he left himself wide open. Koyuki took advantage of his crouched position and used it to coil his next attack. Koyuki would un-crouch himself and lung at the Thief's exposed chest, "Sting!" After he shouted the name of the skill, Koyuki was thrust towards the Thief, and once the skill subsided, Koyuki could see his dagger burried deep into the Thief's chest. The Thief's face was hard to see under the scarf and goggles, but it was obvious it was a fatal blow. Soon the Thief dropped it's knife and grunted painfully before shattering into data fragments just like the previous one. As before, a pinging sound went off and the same messages as before appeared above the defeated monster. "Awesome! That's two down!" Koyuki said to himself confidently.
While he was waiting for what his party leader decided they do next Mugen thought it best to take care of a few things. Swift and practiced movements with his right hand allowed the tall individual to navigate through his Player menu very quickly. It took mere moments for the man to find what he was looking for, the Quests tab. Sword Art Online was still just like any other video game giving plenty of starting Quests to help Players early on in the game. Despite the list that was presented Mugen was only interested in a very particular one. With a press of his finger he confirmed the Quest and quietly recited the name of the Quest, “Form the contract…” Mugen continued the subtle movement of his right side as he navigated from the Quests tab of his Player menu and located the Non-Combat Skills menu, which he had never really accessed in the Alpha testing. His crimson eyes quickly focused on the only Skill available in the tab and with a quiet tap of his finger quickly activated the skill «Familiar Communication».
A soon as he had done so a small circle of crimson light formed under his feet. It was definitely amusing just how close this was to magic, but still managed to make its way to the beta testing of SAO. As the circle of light faded away all that remained was a system window. The game administrator chuckled at the theatrics behind such an easy quest. These Argus developers must have some sort of sense of humor to make these beginning quests so ridiculously easy. “Congratulations! To help you begin your journey we are granting you a partner to help you.” The message was rather corny, but it got the message across. Most Players wouldn’t even bother with something that didn’t have to do with combat, but if people actually read the instruction manual that came with their game or even just spent some time reading through everything they would be rewarded. In this case, just by activating the correct skill you were rewarded with a familiar of your choice! Mugen closed the system window to be replaced with another window, this time with a picture of some sort of animal with arrows at the bottom of the screen. As he began to scroll through Mugen couldn’t decide on what he wanted as his partner. All of the choices were rather straight forward. Each starting familiar represented a corresponding statistic of his digital self – strength, defense, stamina and agility. Recalling what he had distributed at character creation he narrowed his choices to two possibilities. Either he strengthened his weaknesses or further increased his strengths. If things were as he expected he should pick something that not only benefited himself, but also his current and future party members.
A small smile crossed his face as he finally decided. A small press of his finger confirmed his choice and the selection screen vanished. At first it seemed like nothing happened even though the dark haired male was fairly confident he accomplished what he was required to do. He checked his inventory and grinned as he noticed the new item. Baby Bunny. This small rabbit familiar would prove to be super useful now and in the future as speed would be key when all else failed. As he closed his inventory he noticed a small blinking notification. Strange, despite everything he was informed to be prepared as a game administrator he didn’t recognize the alert. After clicking on it he read it out loud for the rest of his party members who had not yet noticed. “Attention Player,” he spoke loud enough for the rest to hear and to get their attention. “You are invited to join us in our first official game event. Please head to the teleport gate and select the event ‘Herald of the New Year’ to participate.” The armored man turned to face his comrades in arms crossing his arms in front of him as he did so, a stance he seemed really comfortable with. “I know it’s not really my place to say since I was the last to join the party but…” his crimson eyes gazed at each in turn to make sure his teammates were following along. “I think it would be a good idea to be a part of this. What do you all think? I can take us all there if you’d like.” He took a moment to check their current location in reference to the teleport gate. It wouldn’t take long but he wanted to avoid the rush of people inevitably heading towards the event. His party may not be fully prepared, but Mugen had a feeling they would do all right. They all seemed more than capable.
                ████ This world had a sun that beat down hard on the world below. Azra could feel the sun on her face and wiped her face as if she was taking the sweat off of her face, yet she knew this was a virtual world. She stopped for a moment, and looked at her hand. This is a virtual world… I have to remember that, she thought to herself. Still, she felt the warmth from the sun, and then a small chilling wind brushed across her body and through her hair. It is amazing, she thought while cocking her head to side as she walked deep in thought. I wonder how they managed to get this system to work, she looked up, deep in thought trying to piece together details of the world and what she knew from the medical side. She had only been in this game for probably half an hour. In this world, there was no real concept of time, and she knew eventually she would have to give up this world to go back to reality and back to her boring life. Excitement, relaxation, she pondered on those two elements of life she was lacking in real life. Will Sword Art Online bring this to me? she questioned with a sigh.
                ████ Since she had no real social life outside of her work, Azra had always been bored of her work, but yet, being a full time physician stressed her to no end since she worked so hard to assure her patients that they would be cured or that they would receive the best amounts of care. She had been asked to go out for a date or a dinner by many of her co-workers. Each time, she would either turn them down or go on the date only to be dissatisfied by the person she went on the date with. Man or woman. It did not matter. She was bored of them before they even left on the date each time. Maybe, she thought as she remembered each date she went on. Maybe this world will bring me excitement. She was fine with no having real relationship. She was not into the intimacy. She wanted to be satisfied in entertainment, and longed for a group of friends much like the friends she earned in the shelter as a child.
                ████ Her childhood had always been on her mind, depth within her subconscious. Dwelling on such matter was trivial, but it consumed her daily. Afterall, her whole reason for being a doctor was to try and help people who grew up in her situation.
                ████ Azra had grew up without her father mostly, and lost her mother at a young age. Grief had lived in her heart for years that one would think she would grow bitter and hate her father for leaving her mother out in the cold. Yet, her heart never grew cold and never iced over. This was all thanks to her step-mother. That woman was able to light up anyone's heart. No wonder why she was able to tame the heart of her father and change him for the better.
                ████ Shortly after her mother had passed on, and Azra was taken by the child services back to her father's manor, Azra noticed a change in his appearance and his attitude. His heart was less cold. He was less of a harden man and more of a father. Azra's half siblings always made the notation that he was more than what he appeared to be. Sure, he was a stern man, but he was also loving.
                ████ As years passed by and Azra grew to love her step-mother, Azra noticed little motions from her father to show that he cared and that he was sorry that he had ever caused her pain or grief. It was he who had made the checks out to help provide and protect those who were left broken and abandoned in the shelter. It was he who paid the large sum of money to help Azra afford university. It was he who would make attempts and ask the others to make any motion they could to include her in the family gatherings.
                ████ It was not long after she had graduated from her undergraduate curriculum that she was approached by her father, and he got to his knees and boldly asked forgiveness for all the years that he had let her and her mother waste away in the shelter. He asked for her forgiveness for inveterately causing the death of her mother and his late ex-wife.
                ████ Azra smiled and gave him her forgiveness and hugged him close as he cried and buried himself into her lap. She had never seen a man cry, let alone her own father. She grew to love him more on that day, and took his blessings and good will wishes for the graduate program.
                ████ Azra had been lost in thought and stopped to notice her vision was wiggling left and right. That is when she noticed her tears and smiled. Father, she thought, while holding her hand on her chest above her heart. Mother… I hope I make you proud. She wiped away her tears, looked to the sky, and smiled wide and kept walking down the path.
                ████ After a few more minutes of walking, Azra had traveled down along the stalls of the market place. She looked into the stalls, and gazed at the items. Armor which she could never wear due to the seemingly high prices. She looked at the amount of in game money she had and realized she had no been anywhere to have any kind of money regardless if she looked or not. She also took time to notice that there were people dueling one another. Dueling, she gave a disgusted face as she watched people duel and accept duel requests. Not something I would like to do… I probably will not duel ever…. She hated the idea of anything that would give people a big ego to gloat or brag. She grimaced and grunted as she noticed people losing, while the winner stood there with his or her hands up gloating away at his or her victory. Real victories are not by dueling, she scoffed at the topic and eventually kept on going.
                ████ She had taken up the art of the sword when she was younger. It was common for those who were wealthy to train their children just for sport. She had already learned how to defend herself on the streets. A sword was just an extension of what she could do in close combat. Too bad this game is all about the sword, she thought with a smirk. She looked down to her rapier and thought while cocking her head to the side, This sword is much like what I used to have a child. Too bad it is a very light weight weapon. She took noticed to see the other weapons people carried. Regular blades, and more. She started to regret her decision to pick this weapon, but she knew all to well that she would probably be better off with rapier to start with. She touched the hilt of the blade and smiled. Like old times, she whispered lowly under her breath.
                ████ She looked around her as she heard her user name being called. "Miss Azra?". She turned to noticed a new person standing near her. She noticed as he was trying to be polite in his question and could tell he was with someone in some degree of affiliation. She got a little closer to see his username better that was above his head. Tremont, she thought and smiled weakly. "Sure, Tremont," she said with some awkwardness in her voice. "I would not mind joining your party", she said as she noticed the party request appearing before her. She looked at the screen that showed "Join party?" and two replies were below. Should she join? She thought long and hard about the decision as she noticed Tremont apologizing as he proceeded to start dueling the person he could easily be considered affiliated by chance with. So they are dueling now too, she said with a frown. They look pretty strong, she added in thought. This might be interesting.
                ████ Even thought she hated the idea of duels, she was still dumbfounded by this game, and at least wanted to see a duel up close to understand the mechanisms. She blindly accepted the party invite, and decided to step back a little bit to watch. She had never really explored the aspects of this game, and still had not even looked at the menu screen of the game. I will have to be sure to look at that in a bit, Azra thought as she took a seat a little bit off from the two men as they proceeded to duel.
Aiden made note of the time in the corner of his field of vision once again, still ten minutes until he would be able to log into the game. He had already tried out all the demos and trial software that had come with the package when it initially arrived from Argus. The whole NERDLES process had been set up and performed so all of his vital statistics had been recorded already. He had done some research on virtual reality and he already knew a decent bit about gaming. For years he had actually considered trying to get into the video game design industry. He had been brought on as a beta tester for other games, but nothing even remotely touched on the world of virtual reality online gaming. MMORPGs had been his life—his saving grace—for years now, but this was a different kind of game entirely. For once he didn’t just get to play a character, in every way that mattered he was going to be the character. How much cooler could it possibly get? A glance at the clock, impatiently, revealed that only a minute had passed since his last look. He really needed to stop doing that. At this point it wasn’t doing any good and he just kept torturing himself with it as time slowly inched by. He turned his attention back to the screen and fired up another one of the demos. He might as well practice to let the time go by quicker. NERDLES was necessary for appropriate feedback. There had to be a frame of reference for the recipient or the information that the game needed to feed them would be confusing and disorienting to an extreme. He had heard that in early product testing, it had actually occasionally made people violently ill or even screwed up their balance and sense of perspective. In a couple cases it lasted for a few days after the NerveGear had been removed. And yet he still kind of envied the men and women who had gotten in on the ground floor of testing the NerveGear. Well, not that much, but still. He was willing to take any advantage he could in this game. He’d been a little skeptical at first, but after talking with James about it for the last couple of weeks, Aiden was ready to see Twilight Arbor thriving again. And he wasn’t going to settle for just being some tiny, run of the mill guild, he wanted them to get back on top. He wanted to be a part of a guild that people could look to and be impressed by. So with seven minutes left he began one of the practice programs. It was simple, manipulating objects as an Avatar in a virtual space. Getting use to interacting with things was fairly easy because it was so similar to how you would actually interact with objects in the world around you. But there were some differences. You never had to worry about unintentionally bringing up a Menu bar in the real world for instance. But it was all fairly easy to control once you go the hang of it. Still, it wasn’t truly a replica of the system in Sword Arts Online. They had kept all that info pretty strictly under wraps up till now. That wasn’t too surprising, since he had managed to get involved in one of the first rounds of Beta Testing. Aiden figured that he might as well count his blessings. The practice was a little boring after having done it so many times, but it did waste a few minutes. Until finally he was in the home stretch. Less than a minute to go. He disconnected from the demo program and took control of his actual, physical body once again. Picking up a phone, he typed out a quick message and hit send only a few seconds before his connection was set to go live. It was still so hard to believe that he was going to get to see some of the old faces from Twilight Arbor again. Not that they would necessarily be the same faces, but that hardly seemed to matter when they all knew each other through the games. It might be a little odd though. When you interact with people in most MMOs its still very clear that you are a person sitting in front of a screen where you are represented. In Aincrad, you are the character, your movements are theirs. You see through the eyes of your Avatar. It could get very easy to see people as their Avatar. In some ways that was a little scary, almost disturbing. But it was also exhilarating. While he played the game, he really would get to take the role of the hero he so desperately wanted to be. Saving damsels in distress, or the male equivalent if there was such a thing. Either way~ He hooked up the NerveGear once again and as the clock hit the appointed time he almost shouted the command to start the game, “Link Start!”
Colors swirled and blurred around him as he was taken to the opening screen of Sword Art Online. He was positively giddy with excitement that he could barely control himself. Still he was interested enough in this game to not skip over all the introductions. By the end he was fairly glad that he hadn’t. They told him a little about the game and gave some helpful pointers for new players, little tips that would serve him well before he learned more on his own. It also pointed out some of the important aspects of the next phase of the game: Character Creation. This was something that Aiden always got excited for. He had never been one of those players who could simply take a pre-generated random and hop right in. There were some games where Aiden spent hours at a time making his Avatar look just right. And those were just regular games, not virtual reality where you became your Avatar. He didn’t want to look like a total dork for the rest of his time in Sword Art Online because he was a little impatient to get started. He went for a relatively tall Avatar; around six foot two like he was. But he made the figure a bit more muscular. Which wasn’t hard since that involved putting any muscle tone on at all, Aiden himself was slightly more physically imposing than a bundle of sticks—and it was a close run thing. He was always a fan or rather exotic hair colors. They looked more realistic on Avatars than they did on real people, so why not try out something fun like green or blue hair? Eventually he chose a dark blue color and long hair styled up into place in something similar to a bun. It had a very eastern look and he let that influence the rest of the Avatar’s design. Durga wasn’t really eastern in the classical sense, it was Indian, but he didn’t think all that many people would recognize the name Durga anyways. Except the people that matter of course, the friends who were supposed to be joining him in this game. The ability to add scars was an interesting touch; he decided to go for a visible one over the eye. It made the character look more experienced, a bit less soft. Durga had always been a tank, or off-tank, up in the thick of things taking the hits for his team so that the DPS could do its job safety. He figured that he would probably end up assuming a similar role in this game.
Next was setting the statistical values for various attributes for the characters. They had cut it down to a slim selection of important stats. Aiden had played games in the past with a dozen stats or more. Given the choice, he would probably have to pick a system like this one though. Less in this case being more. For his statistical allocation he set his Strength fairly high with his Defense rather low and Endurance and Agility middling. His Defense would eventually become his main stat but in most games it was often much easier to level with Strength and power than it was to start out as a Tank and stay pure the whole way. The Strength would be a nice jumping off point. Besides, he was fairly certain that you could select different armor loadouts to help compensate for any lack of raw defensive score. The next set of parameters was the Skill Mastery distributions. He didn’t really know what precisely he would end up using more of so he set those as fives across the board. In the long run it was unlikely that he was going to desperately need those five points for something else, so it was unlikely it would feel like a waste—even if he never used the skills later on. Sure enough, as he’d assumed earlier, the next stage was selection of equipment. The opening screens had nagged him about how important weapon selection was. That made a lot of sense in this game. Some games let you trade out various weapon types, others regulated you to a single weapon. This game apparently offered the ability to branch out later. But everyone had to start somewhere. In the end he chose the Beta Assault Spear. It was a two handed weapon, which meant that he wouldn’t be able to use it with a shield. But he had always been very partial to spears and there didn’t appear to be an option to equip a shield or buckler among the starter equipment. Perhaps that was a feature which would come into play later? For now the fact that it was one of the few long range weapons would give him some versatility in use. Again, a few points here and there wouldn’t go too much to waste if he found out he needed to change plans down the road. Last he got to choose his skills. For combat skills he chose «Observation» and «Fighting Spirit», both seemed like they would be good skills for a tank to have. Checking the weakness and status of opponents, as well as fighting off multiple adds were generally jobs a tank became familiar with. He chose «Beta Forging» as his Non-Combat Ability, if he could make decent weapons and armor then that would be a plus. Besides, maybe it would open up the option to forge a shield at some point? «Parry» was his passive, a very defensive ability that suited his play style perfectly. His last technique was «Strike», which was automatically chosen because of his weapon choice. Presumably there would be other Weapon Techniques later on but for now this was the one. He spread his points fairly evenly across the board, with Observation getting the bulk of the points dedicated to Combat Skills. He got to take one last good look at his Avatar before ending his name: Durga. Then it was time to log in at long last.
He was finally in Aincrad. He opened his eyes to a bright and busy market in the center of town. The intro messages had told him he would spawn in the Town of Beginnings, near the respawn point. A smile spread across his face as he looked around him and moved his character for the first time. It was hard to believe that after all this time his adventure was finally beginning. He hardly knew what to do with himself. Looking around, a thought occurred to him suddenly. The text had been sent but they never really gave each other details on where to meet. If he hadn’t been so anxious he probably could have thought that through before now… Oh well. No use crying over spilled milk. He was willing to bet that he would run into someone soon enough.
In her search of something to do, Psiren had opened up her menu looking for notifications like new events and that sort of thing. Being a game on its first beta test it was very likely that there were going to be quite a few opening events to get people pumped and excited. One thing she was glad about, was although it was a Japanese creation they had decided to put things in English. If they hadn’t Psiren would have been at a complete lose, for reading their characters was proving a harder task then she would have liked.
The red head somewhat multitasked as she did this, for she kept her eyes open for Nox if he ever showed up. She doubted after fleeing like that, that the male she was searching for would show up anytime soon. He was like that. That boy, really needed to get out more didn’t he? For now, Psiren would drop the search trusting that in due time her friend would come to her, or they would run into each other later. Hearing a voice call out to her she closed her screen to look at a male character in front of her, Psiren dropped what she was doing. It took her some time to reply not because she didn’t hear him but because her mind still took a while to translate Japanese into her native tongue, or English. ”Um…” She began trying to think of the right Japanese words to reply but could not recall them right away. The only phrase she had bothered to think to really memorize in Japanese was what she had yelled earlier to find Nox.
Deciding that she would not be able to communicate in their tongue without making a true fool of herself she went with the next best option, English. Mostly everyone knew English, especially gamers. OF course speaking their own tongue would be nicer but she was still learning. ”I´m not really good with Japanese yet…” Psiren chuckled as she scratched the back of her head speaking in English to the male. ”But yes… I was looking for someone… Oh! I do hope you understand English!” How silly of her. She had forgotten to ask if he could speak English. Luckily for her, he was fluent in it, or so she was about to find out. ”It is fine though. We’ll find each other soon enough…..” Her eyes widened as she thought of something just absolutely brilliant! Grinning at the male in front of her she would suddenly point at him. ”YOU!” It really didn’t take much to get her sidetracked with her thoughts. ”There’s an event going on. Want to party up?” Before her could even really reply she was already sending a friend invite and a party request. He could always deny them if he wasn’t interested. This was just how Psiren worked, blunt and straight to the point most of the time while being very energetic and sociable at the same time. With her background, and all her traveling it was either keep to herself or happily speak with everyone in front of her.
Smiling quite happily for the time being to let Nox go, but worry not, she was going to get him one hell of a greeting the moment they did encounter. Yes Nox, you might do well to worry, or you may end up just having paranoid thoughts for no reason. Psiren wasn’t violent, or was she? Nah, she wasn’t, she could fake like she was hell mad though.
Caligon (gosh he really needed to get used to calling himself that and quick), watched her amused as she had to think of whether or not she needed help... He thought that you still found all kinds before responding to her. "What? You're playing a Japanese game, I'm assuming on a server run in Japan, and you can't even try to speak Japanese?" He chuckled a bit at that one, changing over to English so that she could understand him. He felt kind of bad making fun of her, but it was still funny to him. He had never played games like this before, and it was his false assumption that the people who played spoke only Japanese. "Well we could always go and look for him now, it's not like-" Caligon was cut off by her yelling at him, catching a few stares from people. So much for trying to stay incognito. Now a ton of people knew what he looked like. But when she had mentioned an event, and parties, it was his turn to be confused. Never being in the gaming realm before, he had never known even the basic things like parties, for instance. Accepting the invites (okay so party up DIDN'T mean being friends), he decided to ask before he looked like a bumbling idiot later on. "Um... I'm kinda new to this whole gaming thing... What exactly does a party do? And what the heck is a party in the first place?" He scratched his head, thinking that if he were to go farther into the gaming world he had better learn the basics from now before he ended up fighting something. Realizing he had yet to introduce herself to him, he held out a hand for her to shake and smiled, the jagged teeth not helping, but he was trying to make it look the least amount of scary as possible. "The name's Caligon. And who might you be, Miss?"
Japanese game? Yes, it was true but, if that was so why were all the words in English? For the moment Psiren paid little attention to his language comment. She was used to it. Being a foreigner so many times in so many places made one used to such things. The more important part of what he said was the fact he had no idea what in the world she was talking about. Could it be, that this beta tester, was a complete noob? She couldn’t believe it. Eyes opening even wider than before she gasped. ”You mean…. Oh mah… gawd!” Taking in a deep breath she would explain what a party was. ”Party is a name given to a group of people that are currently in the same group. People usually form parties when they go on certain missions and quests ect. More people the better chance you have of success and many times there are bonuses if you are in a party. Usually once the quest is done with people leave the party. Then there are things called guilds but… lets worry about that later. And I’m Psiren.” She stated, speaking quite fast, hopefully not too fast for him to lose track of what she was saying. And unlike what most people thought when seeing her name, it was read Siren. The p was silent. Taking his hand she shook it quickly but didn’t let go. Instead, Psiren tugged on it starting to literally drag him off to the nearest portal, or well, he’d only be dragged if he didn’t start walking. ”If you’ve never played a game before you have a lot to learn…. And… dang, you must have one hell of a social life to have never played any sort of online game before.” What an odd comment. Was she saying that most gamers didn’t have a huge social life? Yeah, pretty much that was the case, well, wasn’t that they didn’t have a life, they just had more free time then other people? That or not so many friends and reasons to always be out of the house? Reaching a portal she would activate it. ”OFF TO THE VAST GRASSLANDS!”
Treasure Hunting Thief
After the small celebration Koyuki gave himself was over, the pain receptors finally kicked in and he winced a bit, raising his right hand to clutch the area of his ribs where he was kicked. "Jeez, they really went all out with the five senses... I'll be surprised if I don't have a bruise there when I log out.." Koyuki chuckled lightly to himself before sheathing his dagger and making his way through the rest of the alley. Koyuki subconsciously rubbed his ribs gently as he walked, not even noticing his hand was gently massaging the area, when suddenly a can was kicked, sending off an echo that quickly reached Koyuki's ears. Gut instinct told him to keep moving, but Koyuki's curiosity got the best of him and he looked back. To his shock, it was another of the Thieves. The Thief was at the far end of the alley, so Koyuki made a run for it, starting to run before he looked forward, which was his mistake. As soon as Koyuki turned his head to look in front of him, Koyuki's eyes widened in horror as another Thief was standing there at the ready, swinging an arm bar directly at Koyuki's chest.
In his frightened state Koyuki wasn't able to evade the attack, and was hit with an arm-bar flat across his chest, knocking him backwards and causing him to flip once, landing on his back. Struggling to get up, Koyuki would witness the Thieves make their way towards him. The wind was still knocked out of him a bit, causing him to struggle unsheathing the dagger. Backing up slowly, seeing as the other thieve from behind was still a ways off, this would keep him out of the range of the second Theive's dagger's range, while stalling to catch his breath. Shortly, time was up. Koyuki's chest surged with pain, but he tried everything he could to focus himself on defense. Once he was able to breath properly, or close enough, Koyuki charged the Thief in front of him, holding the dagger with two hands and ready to attack, the Theif was a step in head of him and saw the attack coming. Koyuki's mind flashed in what seemed like an instant over the menu he'd gone over and remembered seeing a skill called 'Delay' and figured he'd try it out. "Delay!" Suddenly with those words, the Thief seemed to stop for the briefest of moments. This was all the time Koyuki needed. Koyuki would preform a base-ball slide in between the Thief's legs and counter attack with a stab and slash into the Theif's thigh, just like he attacked the previous one.
Once Koyuki had finished the slide, he spun himself around and used his legs to get back up, his breathing becoming hard from the damage to his ribs and chest. The two Theives were charging in now at the exit to the alley where Koyuki had now been and Koyuki gripped the dagger tightly in his one hand. Closing his eyes and listening to their footsteps, Koyuki would try his best to slow his breathing to increase his focus. Koyuki would visualize his dagger glowing and preparing for the skill, this was the first time he'd ever truly paid attention to the process, last time it just happened. Koyuki's body dashed forward from the activation of the skill, but just before the attack connected the Thief brought it's blade down and stabbed Koyuki in the shoulder, but after that Koyuki's dagger dug deep into the Thief's stomach and a white light shown. It had been a critical hit. The Theif burst into the same data fragments as the last two, along with it's dagger, but before Koyuki had time to react, the other Theif from behind ran up and drop kicked Ren's chest, sending him flying backwards and out of the alley.
After a few backwards somersaults, Koyuki lands on his knees clutching his chest with his free hand and his dagger with the other. Now he was out in the open and facing the second to last Thief. Struggling to get up, Koyuki ran into a crowd of people to hide himself, though he doubted it'd be very effective. Once Koyuki was in the crowd, he lowered his head and would zig zag until he was deep into the crowd and not easily seen. Koyuki would pop up once or twice to get the Thief back into his vision, and stealthily make his way towards the monster, Dagger clutched in his hand. Keeping himself low, Koyuki made a final dash once the Thief's gaze was away from him and managed to sneak around into his blind spot and get behind him. As a last ditch effort, Koyuki would rely on his speed and agility alone, and weave between anyone who was in between Koyuki and the Thief, and as fast as he could, Koyuki delivered quick but precise stabs, three of them, two into his back and one was brought up around the Thief's neck and slit it's throat. The Thief then followed suit with the other 3 of it's brethren and burst into data. The same old congratulations messages took place, letting Koyuki know that he'd received 2 more 'Important Papers' and that there was only one to go. Letting out a long and sharp sigh, Koyuki made his way over to a bench and sat down, wincing at the pain in his shoulder, chest, and ribs. Koyuki also took notice to his HP bar, and how he was almost at a third of his HP left, those attacks sure did their job, but for now, Koyuki would rest for a few moments before heading to to find the last of the five Thieves.
Caligon listened intently to what the girl was saying about parties, realizing he had read something similar in the game manual before hand. He really needed to remember the things he read, especially when they were important to whatever he was doing at the particular time. So parties give you bonuses... Bonuses means that he would get stronger, faster than he would normally if going alone. And the fact that she didn't question about his name being the name of a famous band in Japan... Well, that certainly made it easier to talk to her and not have to worry so much. So when she gave the face a name (so the P WAS silent!), and started dragging him , he really didn't complain. "Well excuse me for having a highly demanding job and a kid to raise." Caligon retorted to her comment. He had luck in finding a friend here, but he felt bad: When the beta phase ended he may not have enough time to play until after tour, and that didn't end for a few months! "Um... Yay?" Caligon half cheered, half asked, as Psiren dragged him into the portal to the Vast Grasslands.
Koyuki would lean back on the bench and sigh as he looked up to the sky. He was also looking at his half empty health bar. Those last four fights took quite a bit out of him, and the pain was still there too, but now that he was resting Koyuki began to feel a bit better. That is, until he heard screaming. Koyuki stood up on the bench to see over everyone's head and looked around to find the source of the scream. Then, he found it, not too far off in the distance was a fairly tall man with goggles and a scarf, and he was shoving people out of his way and headed in Koyuki's direction. 'Crap... The last one found me before I could rest up a bit...' Koyuki thought to himself and looked around a bit, for something to hide with, but he found nothing in the immediate area, as the crowds of people weren't as thick as a few moments ago. Koyuki proceeded to jump off of the bench and begin to run, which only sparked the Thief perusing him to break out into a sprint as well - the chase was on.
Koyuki knew not to look back this time around. Even though he knew there was only one, Koyuki knew he had to pay attention to where he was going and plan everything out carefully, for one mistake could cause him to fall and lose his ground on the Thief. As Koyuki ran through the small crowds and streets, his footwork could be seen only as impressive. At sudden appearances of obstacles, Koyuki was able to change direction in a full sprint on a dime to avoid damage. If there was no way around a crowd around a stall or vendor, Koyuki took things into his own hands and jumped into the stall, gripping onto the low beams that held the carpeted roof in place and use them to swing through the stall gracefully, flying through the stall just in time to avoid slamming into the NPC vendors and land on the other side, using the inertia from the jump to gain a bit more speed. Soon Koyuki was closing in on a smaller passage way from one district of the town to another, and it was a bottle necked area. This was where Koyuki would lose the Thief. Koyuki gained enough speed and jumped forward onto a wall, stepping on the wall while running above everyone for a few steps before jumping off of the wall, doing a flip in the air and preforming another few steps on the wall before exiting out the other side. Once there Koyuki made an obvious turn of the corner, which luckily took him out of the Thief's line of sight for a few moments. Koyuki began to scan the area and managed to find a rather large cart of feeding hay, and would jump in, unsheathing his dagger in the process. "Hide!" Koyuki would whisper in a panicked tone and he would stay still, allowing the skill to do what it does best, keep Koyuki hidden.
Moments later, Koyuki could see through the straw and hay that the Thief had followed him, and stopped, dumbfound that it's prey had suddenly disappeared. Koyuki would witness as the thief drew it's dagger and began to cautiously walk in the direction it had thought Koyuki had gone in. Each step the thief took made Koyuki's heart beat harder and harder, which caused Koyuki to struggle to hold his breath, not wanting the sound of his heavy breathing to give him away. 'So close... so close!' Koyuki thought to himself each step the Thief took. The thief was almost within striking distance, and Koyuki would count the steps once the thief was close enough. Soon, the Thief was two feet away, and Koyuki decided now was the time to strike. Breaknig the hide skill, Koyuki pounced half way out of the cart and grabbed the thief by the hair and pulled him close. With the hand his dagger was in, Koyuki would spin the blade so that the blade was facing downward in his hand, then he'd reach around and pound his fist into the Thief's chest twice while holding hit in a head lock. Once Koyuki finished the assault, he'd pull the Thief into the cart of hay and add one more stab into the Theif's chest, shattering the monster into data fragments.
Koyuki's breath was extremely heavy as he struggled to get out of the hay cart. The adrenaline had now vanished and the effects of the running, jumping, and the wounds from the previous fight hit Koyuki like a brick, and once his feet touched the ground, Koyuki's legs gave out on him and he fell down onto his back side, leaning against a wheel of the cart. A similar announcement appeared, but it was abit different from before. "CONGRATULATIONS!" It would read. "You've collected all five Important Papers! Head on over to the Local Market NPC and turn in the quest for your rewards!" Was what the message said this time. Koyuki would groan, not feeling in any condition to move at the moment, so he would rest for a few moments again.
After what seemed like a half hour, Koyuki felt he was ready to get up and moving again. Though his entire body was sore, Koyuki stood up, albeit with the assistance of using the cart to pull himself up, and made his way back over to the NPC that had given him the quest. Not even noticing, Koyuki was limping the entire time. It wasn't a horrible limp, but the limp was there and his physical features looked completely worn and beat, but it also radiated an accomplished feeling about his person. Koyuki's face held an awkward smile the entire time, and when he finally arrived at the NPC, he would activate the quest's conversation. Once the conversation was over, Koyuki selected the 'Complete Quest' option from the shop menu and a new banner appeared above Koyuki. "Quest Complete!" is all the banner said. Koyuki's awkward smile turned into a confident and warm smile. The first step in his adventure had finally come to a close, but now the next step was to find a potion shop of some way to restore his HP and injuries.
Elizabeth sat on her bed, hands placed gently on either side of her NerveGear, ready to raise it onto her head when she got the message. She was about to step into the world of Aincrad, in the world’s first virtual reality massively multi-player online role-playing game: Sword Art Online. Finally the text came, everyone was ready and they would all be logging on soon. She smiled at the thought of seeing them all again, even if it was just going to be in avatar form. She raised the NerveGear up and settled it over her head lightly. It was really quite comfortable, especially since she could lay out on her bed and enjoy it. Once she was settled she mouthed the start-up command, “Link Start!”
For a brief moment she lost sensation in her limbs and the rest of her body, it was as if her mind were floating in nothing, conscious but unconnected. It was probably the most unnerving part of the whole process and she was glad that she had practiced using the NerveGear by going through all of the demo programs that came with the equipment. That had helped her work out some of the nerves she had about using it. But soon enough sensation returned slightly, mostly to her hands. And the opening screen was finally showing up in front of her ‘Welcome to Sword Art Online, please create your Avatar.” She could move her hands somewhat, it was strange since it didn’t actually show them but she could feel them clearly interacting as if she was using a touch screen interface. She had heard that the UI within the game would function similar to this, so it was a good chance to get familiar with the controls if nothing else. After browsing the options and laughing a bit at the randomize feature, she noticed that there was an option to import your own image. She clicked that, mostly out of curiosity. The NerveGear then asked her to run her hands over her body, to give it an approximation of her dimensions. She did so, sure that if she could still feel her face she would be blushing. But her embarrassment was replaced by amazement when on the screen a three dimensional figure of her appeared moments later. Mentally biting her lip, she turned the figure this way and that. She rather liked the idea of using it. But going for a carbon copy seemed almost like cheating, or maybe it was just too boring. She began tweaking the scales for the character, height and weight, some of the facial adjustments. After a moment of alteration she started to get some idea of what she wanted. When she was finished, she was looking at what could have been her at fifteen or sixteen years old. She smiled at that. Well kids do play games after all; why not play as a child-like version of herself? She confirmed that this was the appearance she wished to use for the Beta of Sword Art Online. The next screen requested a name. Aloud she said, “Minerva. M-I-N-E-R-V-A.” It asked for confirmation on the smelling and pronunciation, which she gave her okay to quickly, eager to get to the actual game now. The rest was some basic selections that would shape her character. For this she did actually have to slow down some.
Weapon choice, it even notified her that this was one of the most important choices that you could make early on in the game. Later on down the road it was possible to branch into other weapon’s but at the start you only got one so you had to make your choice count. She looked through what they had to offer carefully, reading the stats and description of each one. There was no magic in this game, as she had been sad to learn, so staffs and wands were right out. She still wasn’t sure if she could continue to be a good, supportive team member without the ability to heal, but she was willing to find out. It helped to try and imagine what all of her friends would be playing and pick a weapon that seemed like it might compliment them. In the end, she chose a rapier. It was light and fast with a medium range, one of the few weapons in that range bracket. Not the most powerful weapon but then she had never exactly been the most powerful player. With that thought in mind she build her initial built around speed and staying power more than strength or defense. She could never picture herself as a tank. Her role had always been to support a tank and make sure they lasted through the battle. Tanking tended to be a serious responsibility and it wasn’t one that she was going to shoulder on her first time outside of the healing role. Enough stamina to ensure that she could make it through the fight alongside her friends and the speed and abilities that would help her stay mobile to lend support where it was needed. By the time she was ready to enter the last pieces of information, she could hardly contain her excitement. At long last, the screen went black, and crisp letters appeared that would have made her smile if she could, ‘Welcome to Aincrad’.
Sensations started to return to her, and slowly she felt herself opening her eyes. It was an odd feeling since they had never really been “closed” exactly. But the sensations were very distinct. Bright sunlight greeted her and the sounds of people all around her. She appeared to be in a brightly lit square. This had to be the Town of Beginnings, a very frankly named location where all the players began their journey. She spent the first few minutes just moving, testing out how her body could react. Already, even at level one, she felt more able bodied than in person. Despite the fact that she looked like a young teenage girl. It occurred to her that she did not know where her friends were. None of them knew exactly where in the town they would start out, they had just agreed to meet up somewhere around town after they had logged on. She considered waiting till she saw someone but quickly abandoned that idea. Knowing her friends they had probably run off to try and find adventure almost immediately. She grinned to herself. She had never felt very competitive in person, but in a gaming world, she was ready to shoot for the top as much as anyone else. Having come from a well-known, respected Guild like Twilight Arbor, she knew what it took to get ahead. Laughing, she darted off down one of the long stretches that led out of the starter city and into the fields that surrounded it. She wasn’t going to get left behind by a bunch of poofters, much as she might love them.
As she was darting through the streets she started getting acquainted with the menu system. It was very intuitive, quite easy to understand. You could see through it so it was hard for it ever really become obstructive. Unless you really looked at someone or they had their menu open, it was surprisingly difficult to tell that she was in a game at all. The technology really was just remarkable. NPCs were fairly easy to distinguish, simply because their names and status were displayed differently. It was all the more surprising when one of them actually walked up to her, questioning if the young miss had a moment to spare for a butcher in need of assistance. Absolutely beaming she said, “Of course how can I help? Might you have a mission I can undertake to assist you?”
The NPC could actually communicate! It must have a limited number of responses, or even more likely a generator based on what was said to it, but at least with surface conversation it was hard to tell that it wasn’t a real person responding to her. He told her that he was one of the many butchers across the city who was honored with the task of preparing a feast for the newcomers to Sword Art Online, but that none of them had nearly enough meat to feed all the players! Minerva made a show of saying that it was no doubt hard times but if there was some way that she could acquire some supplies for him, she would be happy to. And sure enough, the man mentioned that the Frenzy Boars in the Vast Grasslands just outside the Town of Beginnings had some very tender meat. If she could gather five portions of the meat, he would be more than happy to compensate her for her troubles. And she was of course welcome to keep anything she found while fighting the Frenzied Boars. Out of curiosity she asked him if he could indicate on her map where the boars were likely to spawn. To her delight, a bright red outline appeared around the areas where they could be found. With a grin she said, “Never fear good sir, your feast will go off without a hitch. I shall return with the Frenzied Boar Meat shortly.”
As soon as the quest was accepted she felt a notification pop up and sought out her Quest Log in her Menu, sure enough, ‘Newbie Banquet’ had been added to her quest log with a brief recap of what she needed to do. She couldn’t help but giggle to herself. This really was just one of the coolest experiences she had ever had, this video game was amazing! But she couldn’t just stand around giggling like a loon all day. Who knows what the boys were up to? They might have already logged in and gotten ahead of her. As she raced off towards one of the gates leading out of the town the thought hit her: what if they had already started playing without her and texted her after so they had a head start. Oh that would so be like them, they’d probably tease her about it later. Well not if she had anything to say about it. She reached down and felt the firm grip of her rapier. She had never really played on offensive class before but she was going to have to learn fast. She Sprinted ahead out through the gate, passing by a few other players and npcs as she went.
Upon seeing the addition of another member to their party, the aforementioned “Miss Azra” as Tremont appeared to be referring to her as, that brought the total up to three, Kaaz made a happy noise somewhere in between a grunt and a whimper that just arose from the back of his throat. The party he was in appeared to be growing quickly, maybe it would even max out all its member quite soon? That would certainly be an exciting time, would it not? Roaming through the lands of Aincrad, fending off enemy players and monsters, forging great armor, plundering the dungeons and floors in that famed tower yonder, and best of all setting up a great fish market. They would set sail and plunder across the world; greatness was waiting for this fell party! Maybe introductions were in order.
”Oh hello nice Miss Azra lady. I am Ultimate Kaaz, Kaaz for short really since I do not know if Ultimate is a real title sanctioned by the game but if it is I hope to achieve it. I suppose it would be a late-game title then, which means it would do us good to hurry through. This here Berserker Axe Warrior Tremont is my fellow ally and Norse brother-in-arms. Berserker Axe Warrior Tremont uses a large axe as a weapon while I here use a spear, as you can see. As I can see, you seem to have chosen, from the starting gear, to utilize a rapier-“ If there was any time Kaaz became rather conscious of when he began to ramble, it was around strangers and even more inexplicably he calculated that the self-consciousness arose statistically more often around strangers of the other gender perceived to be within acceptable mating ranges set by his DNA, genes, his brain, and human society at large. Ultimately both certain and uncertain of where he was going to go with his current train of thought being spoken out loud (yes, he would lecture about the brittle nature of the rapier and the overall superiority of the spear in a combat situation but after that he would need something else to talk about wouldn’t he?).
So instead, his dueling partner, Tremont, provided a great distraction and a way out that grabbed a considerably larger amount of Kaaz’s attention. Though Tremont had called Kaaz a friend, indeed almost appeared to emphasize it when talking to the nice Miss Azra lady, those words meant little to Kaaz. What was the measure of friendship anyways? Did friendship start at the meeting? Was there a certain set period of time required before the interactions between two people evolved into showings of friendship? Was it the instead the quality of the interaction that determined friendship? Was a declaration of friendship, what appeared to be the option Tremont had taken, mandatory for one to have formed? What even constituted the obligations of being friends? It was something much more difficult to pin down than, say, marriage or civil unions. At least marriages and civil unions had strictly laid out rights and responsibilities required of the people entering such a contract. It did not appear that the government cared to set in mind an equally, if not more, comprehensive list of rights and responsibilities granted to friends. In fact, the designation appeared to be meritless and useless in most contexts.
Back to the matter at hand though, Tremont had arrayed himself into a combat position. It seemed that he did not reciprocate the same ten paces back that Kaaz himself had elected to take. It was not based on anything solid except for certain scenes in westerns and documentaries about the life of Alexander Hamilton. As it did not have any set regulation or relevant historical obligation, Kaaz was willing to overlook Tremont’s blatant refusal to follow dueling etiquette. Or rather, maybe it was Kaaz in the wrong here for moving away ten paces when the duel could have started at the small distance apart they were in before? It was all very confusing and Kaaz wished he could have observed the nuances of various other duels before engaging in this one against Berserker Axe Warrior Tremont. The careful posturing and positioning and sizing up that was purported to take place. Not that Kaaz was any good at reading into posturing, positioning, and body language as it was. Rather, despite his impressive and intimidating strong man build, he was still slouched over, and not even as predatorily as some hunters will do to reduce their profile in the wilderness. Seeing his opponent take an odd defensive stance with his axe across his body.
”You are generous, Berserker Axe Warrior Tremont to offer me the first move in our duel. I must profess an inexperience with duels and indeed I was hoping you would take the initiative to allow me to judge your movements and our respective abilities. Verily, mayhaps you may take the first move as I will still continue to study you before I make a concrete decision to see where I should best attack for optimal effect. Quite so, your armor appears lacking and I too must mentally prepare myself for bloodying another creature that exists in this universe, regardless that this is a VRMMORPG. For since you do not wear a shirt of mail as most other player-controlled denizens of this world do, I am most hesitant in sending this sharp implement of war into your chest area or solar plexus.” Kaaz responded to Tremont’s offering up the first move. As the field had deployed around them that sought to prevent outside intervention, Kaaz moved two heavy, tentative steps forward, eyes looking at Tremont then the ground then Tremont’s weapon then Tremont’s feet and generally darting about trying to take in all sorts of information.
While it certainly was not as intimidating as a straight-up stare down, Kaaz himself would have been unaffected by such shows of bravado and displays of alpha male dominance. Instead he opted to run some calculations. While he had managed to max out his Equip Load and taken no agility while buffing up his defense immensely, creating an absolute war tortoise to weather a storm of blows, Tremont’s equipment meant that his equip load would be quite small. A lower equip load meant faster speed as it was, meaning even if Tremont had no Agility too he would’ve been faster than Kaaz. That detail was fine with Kaaz since he had the longer-ranged weapon. However, despite the fact that Tremont was a rotund man and portly man, Kaaz kept in mind that Tremont was indeed a Berserker Axe Warrior. Powerful Strength, no doubt, to deal crushing blows to opponents and perhaps a fierce speed to constantly stay engaged to any other being, whether friend or foe. Truly a terrifying opponent for a first-time duel for a first-time player.
With that in mind, Kaaz took one more step then stopped advancing and started slowly circling Tremont. With his spear, wielded with two hands too, Kaaz had managed to get Tremont into jabbing range without being forced to extend his arms of the spear in their entirety. Yes, as a single spearman engaging in a duel without the combined forces of regiments or raiding parties at his back, Kaaz would do well to simply whittle away at Tremont’s health points. With his long range advantage over Tremont, he was outside of the Battle Axe’s attack range while giving himself extra thrusting distance if Tremont tried to back step. As his eyes flitted quickly about his opponent, he judged by the weird defensive stance of the axe that Tremont might indeed let Kaaz take the first attack. Whether or not that would work in his favor would have to wait and see.
Tremont’s torso, while unarmored and indeed a fleshy, juicy, succulent target, his thrusting spear should not have too many problems at all in dealing with the light leggings the man wore. Alternatively he could also aim for his head. To spice things up, Kaaz could throw in some light jabs and feints to encourage Tremont to keep on a passive defensive or force him to dedicate a movement while he would then thrust at another area, striking a powerful blow. If Tremont tried to close in too quickly all of a sudden, Kaaz would shorten his grip on the spear try to maneuver it into position between him and Tremont; failing that he could swing around the butt for a strong blow. Wow, it almost looked like Tremont might be in trouble. Kaaz knew that the Berserker Axe Warrior likely wouldn’t follow his plans so easily but his weapon advantage was really, really good right now. Not to mention with his armor and defense, Tremont would need to work hard and get direct hits to have a hope of damaging Kaaz. And while Kaaz himself was slow, he had no intention of standing still and simply eating an axe to the face. Now he wished he had hand-picked the ability Parry instead of deciding he would Howl, yet there was no helping it. He would still make use of his abilities. Still steadily circling Tremont and pulling back for a cursory poke at Tremont’s right arm to test his defenses, Kaaz unleashed a hellish scream ripped from the vocal cords of a mountain lion that had fallen off a large cliff, began hitting multiple rock outcroppings on the way down, broke all its leg bones, was in pain, and was slightly miffed about its ill fortune.
”AGHARHEISFHJKKKZKDMCTJDSLEASITEESSSMARAWRGHMAFFINS.” Kaaz bellowed monotonously, his very first skill used. He was most impressed with sections of his scream where the vowels themselves disappeared for a few syllables. As such though, while it had been sudden and hopefully unexpected, it would ultimately have sounded quite similar to a child undergoing puberty with more breaks in his voice than the San Andrea Fault Line. This was because the level of Howl was still only one and thus not very good. If they were out hunting, his Howl would have intimidated a grand total of no monsters while annoying the living mucus off the blue slugs.
Right as he finished releasing his underwhelming yet annoyingly pitched Howl, Kaaz suddenly noticed something that distracted him from his spear thrust. Instead, he stared at an apparent corner of his field of sight and wondered what to do before remembering the owner’s manuals and concept guides he had read. Swiping with his right hand, he brought up an event announcement. An event that was going on right now! It reminded him of a few things. Looking up at his opponent and then his other party member, Kaaz let out a seemingly disinterested, ”Oh, Berserker Axe Warrior Tremont and nice Miss Azra lady, Happy Holidays as I do not know what you two are prone to celebrating this time of year and do not fully know which religion, culture, or custom you abide by. It appears we have an Event starting very soon. How fortunate yet unfortunate for us, isn’t it? Shall we call this a tie then endeavor to continue this duel at another time, Berserker Axe Warrior Tremont? Perhaps by then our skills, abilities, and band of Vikings shall have increased.” Shifting his spear to his left arm, Kaaz began to attempt to navigate from the Event pop up issued, which he endeavored to memorize so he could call it up any time despite his convenient user interface that would’ve let him pull up the notice and the Quest Logs at will, and then navigated his way to sending Tremont a tie request to achieve a mutual agreement to cease hostilities, elsewise the field might not disappear.
”Let us head off then to the nearest teleportation gate in town where we shall be transported to the Event area alongside others. This too is a good opportunity to get more party members and acquaintances in this game.” With that delivered rapid-fire and barely even waiting to see if Tremont accepted the proposed tie in the duel, one could argue Kaaz simply knew Tremont well enough to know that the rewards of the Event were much more enticing than a reward-less duel but they would be kidding themselves, pulled up a map with a few more swipes, and headed off towards the Teleportation Gate in town. Certainly it helped that since he was not the only one to have received said message, he could follow some of the other people who were moving in the same direction. Even if Tremont did not accept Kaaz’s offer of a tie, Kaaz would’ve forfeited upon exiting the field. Although he suspected he might not realize right away, Kaaz would likely throw quite the angry tantrum if he realize that he had a 100% loss record and moan about the unfairness of having that exposed to every player who would have wanted to look. Through and through, Kaaz would prefer that the number crunching in Sword Art Online to work favorably for him at the end of the day.
