First off, you need to consider that Christianity was being persecuted by the Roman empire at the time and could not practice their faith openly. Wouldn't it make sense for them to place their own feasts and celebrations on the same days as the Romans? Celebrating on a different day, or not celebrating at all on the days of big feasts would likely arouse suspicion. Secondly, the exact date of Christ's birth isn't known. The winter solstice was celebrated as the birth of the sun god Sol Invictus. It also marks when the days start to become longer. So it makes sense to put Christmas on that holiday, since it marks the birth of their God, and the days growing longer is analogous to new light entering the world. By the way, I am a Catholic. You are entitled to your opinion and you are free to believe what you want, but I'd appreciate it if you stop badmouthing Catholicism. I'm sure you didn't intend any offense, but such speech against another's belief is hurtful.
Seiji. I believe, if I recall correctly, the main reason why the feasts are on the Roman holidays is because of Emperor Constantine converting all of the Romans to Catholicism. I do know about the persecution of Christians, and can understand the reason why they would want to celebrate at the same times the Romans did to avoid suspicion. As I recall learning in my World Religions class, somewhere contained within the Bible it says that Jesus was born sometime in April.
I really try to not badmouth anything.....and it's very hard with catholicism...actually, religion in general. Mainly because I believe that religions do more harm than good. I was raised as catholic, but am not religious. Thankfully, my mom understood and did not force me. She did ask that I do not go about cause issues with anyone who was religious, which I honored because I understood and agreed with her reasoning. However, I will try my utmost to keep from badmouthing it. Now, I feel like I should explain why I wish what I do. One of the reasons I don't like Catholicism is because of how it gets used by many as an excuse for bad behavior. I know that many Christians are not like that. I would list all of my reasons, but there are a lot. There are many other reasons, but it will probably seem like I am badmouthing Catholicism, so I won't (though I would really like to explain them.). But, the reason why I really wish Catholicism had nothing to do with December is because my birthday is in December, my name is unintentionally super religious and the way in which Christmas (both the commercialized and religious version) is just everywhere. Just as I try to not encroach upon others with my views, I really don't like being encroached upon either. And honestly, Catholicism can be quite intrusive....
