Reno would narrow his eyes at the mention of more stolen Cipher technology. Given the source of the last influx of Cipher nonsense and who had been directly involved there, it seemed like it was about to become a very interesting time for his own little investigation and the half-mothballed boards and string. "I get why maybe the majority of us weren't sent, what with the whole very well known appearance stuff, but who the hell would rank as our best operative for this?" Reno asked, blinking a few times as he heard the response from Ogerpon. Pointing towards the Pokemon, he added, "Also, I agree with shortstack. We keep saying that team name and I'm just gonna want lunch."

Listening to the conversation, Beau would shrug and turn on his heel. "I'll go get my social media coordinator. That way if we cause another international incident, we can try for some PR spin." He said, dialing up Aria as he did so.

There would be a bright pink flash as the team Claydol teleported back with a passenger, an object the size of a small sedan perched on her shoulder. "Whats wrong!? Are we finally doing something major again!? School is making me stir-crazy!" Leslie crowed, her newest iteration of her hammer coming into focus as she glanced around the room. While it was still the same large size as it had been when it ended up forgotten from the Kitakami trip, the actual look of the hammer had been spruced up from the pure grey metal to now resembling the dual horn mouths of a Mega Mawile with the handle mounted in between the two horns.

Sol would be one of the few that did recognize the region, but this information was largely news to him. "You'd think somehow his crap wouldn't find its way that far... can't say I'm crazy we're wading in Ranger territory given our past and all, either. Still... best operative? I know a few have been notably absent, but I'm pretty sure at least Spenser wouldn't be terribly happy. Still, who'd you even send-"

Amaranth picked up on Sol's sentence stopping, looking over. "Send who?" She asked.

It didn't take long for Sol to have a very good guess on the agent that was sent to Almia. "Sub, you didn't just go and send-"

At once, the doors to HQ would open up, followed by the distant cry of a Staraptor that was flying back home.

"Swear I'm gonna take that Fearow of his and... oh, Sub, there you are."

Those around the HQ's commons would see Cera walk through the door, transformed and adjusting the jacket of a Ranger's uniform. A folder tucked under her arm as she walked towards Sub. A Pichu was perched on her shoulder with a curious look, eliciting a sigh after a brief comment from her. "No, I don't think he has a ukelele either..."

The year for her had been... eventful, to say the least. It started off tame enough, being called in to Sub's office shortly after returning from Kitakami and presented with the Tera Shard Freth found during her excursion in Area Zero. In the name of figuring out more about it, she was to keep it on her and go about things as usual, reporting if anything came of it. There were high hopes that the Mew would uncover something, but otherwise she'd take to the front lines for Shadow Pokemon extraction and purification thanks to her natural immunities. There were a few breaks to spend time with Amaranth too, especially with her budding curiosity about contests and Pokemon Coordination, and there had been a few training sessions with Sol too for the sake of killing two birds with one stone. For her, it was an effort to see if the shard might do something, while Sol found it a good opportunity to also learn the proper limits of what he wielded. Especially when she remarked that the shard's energy felt like a swirl to her.

All of this would ultimately be short lived, when she found herself in Sub's office again. This time, with a folded Ranger's uniform being slid towards her with a hint of disdain. She was to head to Almia immediately and go undercover, with a lead found that pointed towards the region. Once there, she'd conduct reconnaissance concerning a group that recently formed, posing as one of the Rangers to keep suspicions low and directed towards them. It also, to her chagrin, meant interacting with the Ranger Union proper for the first time in years and putting herself right in Spenser's crosshairs. Still, her history with the Rangers and familiarity with Almia (and the occasional day in Fiore) in general meant she had information nearly no one else did. She was even offered a Capture Styler again to complete the look, with a few... modifications to allow her to use it if needed.

Over the months to come, she'd glean the information she could and compile anything that might provide more leads or prove credence towards this one, working alongside the Ranger Union in a sort of mutual "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" sense and maintain the ruse. It did feel nice not entirely having to hide that she was a Mew around the union, having no hope of hiding her identity too well, but to say it wasn't the only task she had in Almia would've been a lie. After all, if she was there and posing as a Ranger anyway, why not play the role and give less reason to suspect anything? Today, she had finally had what felt like all she could get together, or at least enough for a proper report to Sub and the team to make their move, so she took the first Staraptor she could find out of the region to fly over to Tohjo Falls and the HQ hidden away, sending a message that she'd be on her way posthaste. And hopefully quickly enough that the Ranger Union wouldn't catch on to operating without their sayso.

"Finally got the rest of the information you've been wanting, minus the part where someone was hungry for Dim Sum and I think someone isn't happy about a little reverse engineering," she remarked as she handed off the folder.

"You did... Sub, did you think about cutting out the foreplay before dousing them with gasoline?" Sol asked in response, shaking his head.

"Wait, Cera's the agent? I know she's talked about being a Ranger befo- ohhhhhh." Suddenly, everything clicked for Amaranth, though she was less bothered about the whole thing. "I mean, she would know the region better than I would."

"...why're you all looking at me like Sub sent Larrimore to do this?" Cera asked after a moment, noticing all the glances being given to her and Sub.

Pointing towards the Pokemon, he added, "Also, I agree with shortstack. We keep saying that team name and I'm just gonna want lunch."

"Grahhhh...." Lifting a newly-formed cudgel as its mask changes from Grass to Fire at Reno's words, Ogerpon would be intercepted from behind as Darts nonchalantly reaches forwards and holds it back from swinging forwards and dashing Reno's skull like a fragile egg. She spins towards him, protesting the insult to her honor.

"Grahh pon!"

"No."

"Pyon pon pon!"

"Fair, but still no."

"...why're you all looking at me like Sub sent Larrimore to do this?" Cera asked after a moment, noticing all the glances being given to her and Sub.

"Ohh, it was Cera." The Giratina hybrid hadn't thought back to her Ranger days in quite a while. But it made sense, she knew the territory, she knew the people, and would probably have the best chance of blending in. Still, with hypnotism in the mix and Cipher tech this Dim Sun team was trying to establish themselves as a heavy hitter, clearly.

MoniqueBrie
"Almia?" Monique asked, the name of the region hanging uncomfortably off her tongue. "I can't say I have ever heard of it. Or this Ranger Union. What makes their regions so different?"

But hearing Cipher and technology in the same sentence made clear this was a sobering task. She knew all too well what Cipher technology could do to a world, and hypnotizing Pokémon? This was bad. These Dim Sun people needed to be put out of their misery.

He glances in Monique's direction, the lack of pizazz almost as startling as any crazy visage she could dream up. "Yeah, these Ranger Unions were a thorn in our side from nearly day one. Used to be little tyrants of their own fiefdoms and making us out to be criminals, generally trying to drive us underground and snuff us out. Not our favorites, to say the least. Cera here," He gestures at her as she prepared to give the news. "Was one once upon a time, a long time ago. Until the corruption got too much for her to be able to conscientiously keep working alongside them."

As everyone spoke, showing confusion over who this 'operative' was, a certain Pinsir hybrid passed through the room, a poffin in his mouth and a Soda Pop in his left hand as he just now read the message he was sent on the SNAG in his right hand. In that moment Larrimore would realize that it wasn't a coincidence that all these Snagems were gathered here in the common room and slowly began to look around at them in silence. That was until he heard Darts' comment about him followed up by Cera's, his head on a swivel as he looked to each of them and back. Pocketing his SNAG and removing the poffin from his mouth he said; "Ouah...I'm here just keeping my head down so I don't cause another international incident and I still catch what you might call 'strays'. Mon dieu..." The hybrid said as he exited the room. Last thing he needed to do was go to one of the Ranger Union regions and rekindle old grievances. He was good at attract heat, unfortunately.

"Ah, Cera! There you are, I was just bragging about you. Though I suppose Sol doesn't agree with me singing your praises." Sub said, sticking his tongue out at Sol. "As for Spenser..." Sub started to respond to Crystal, turning to her and smiling. "I hope he shows up. I didn't get the pleasure of saying hello to him back in the WCC." He said with a wink. "But yes, their hypnosis inducing technology is a concern for our own Pokemon, Aile, but if Cera's intel is correct Capture Stylers are very useful at overriding the hypnosis and our Snag Machines were based on Capture Styler technology originally so it's safe to assume we can easy use our Snag Machines to snag back our Pokemon with their own Pokeballs if need be. As for what you should bring your Snag Machine definitely and a Dark type if you got one. They are especially resistant to the hypnosis according to Cera." Sub said, answering both Aile and Brian.

"And to answer you, Monique, the Ranger Union regions are unique in that they do not allow the sale or use of Pokeballs within the regions. They place a tremendous amount of stock on not disturbing nature which includes Pokemon. As such they use Capture Stylers to temporarily command Pokemon and once finished with whatever task is needed they release back to the wild." He said to the foxy hybrid. "...I don't know what you just said but I feel like you said something funny. I like you." He said to Ogrepon.

"So, with all that said go get ready. We're going to move out immediately and head out to Almia, particularly an island called Boyleland. It's there where Dim Sun's base is said to be. It's a volcanic island so I expect it to be hot, just to give you guys a head's up. Once you're ready Claydol will be standing by to teleport us directly to Boyleland, Cera already mapped out the place for Claydol in advance." He instructed his teammates. Time to move out.

Lykas huffed and puffed quietly in the corner after Sub mentioned their "best operative" on the job. He could only think of one or two people who might be any good for something like this but neither of them was the person who arrived a few moments later. He fumed at the sight of her but it wasn't because of her, directly. He'd always seen her as being the most child-like member of the team and it felt wrong to send her into the thick of all this. But it made sense. He hadn't thought about her early days, having come to join Snagem from the Ranger Union in the first place. And it wouldn't have been the first time she went to infiltrate their ranks to gather intelligence for them. As he fought his rage back down, the black glow that had begun to swell behind his eyes dulled and finally, after a very long few moments, extinguished as he mentally convinced himself that this was fine. Sub wouldn't have forced her to go if he thought she would be in real danger, after all.

"Are you sure sending a Pokemon to investigate a team hypnotizing Pokemon into being brainwashed minions was wise?" Odd asked as he turned toward the kitchen, Libelle beginning to fuss as he had delayed fetching her lunch.

"Good point. Normally, I wouldn't question your decisions but this just feels like it wasn't the most well-thought-out." Lykas replied as Odd disappeared into the kitchen. "It's not like she's Larry. She's strong and she's got enough brains to actually cause issues if they affect her mind." The hybrid pointed out, dogpiling on Larrimore along with several others.

"I think I've missed something..." Clare remarked quietly as the Larrimore hate-train picked up more and more passengers as it circled the room. As Cera arrived and delivered her findings, Clare simply watched quietly for a moment. They didn't recognize the Mew in her transformed state. They'd be lucky to say they'd seen it more than once or twice and it had been over a year since the last time they could recall having noticed Cera at all with them being at the Academy for the last several semesters.

"They sound like some people I knew. Who were also clients at Sub Rosa, but that's another story," Monique huffed. "It sounds like a mission for heavy hitters, that's for sure, and I'll have to tell the academy I'm out on Snagem business in who-knows-where. Maybe Clavell will have to look back on some book in that library and learn about it again."

Her team was starting to take shape in her head. Marowak, of course. Honchkrow, obviously, in case aerial travel was necessary. Malamar, in case she needed to fight hypnosis with hypnosis. Primarina over Crawdaunt, so she wasn't absolutely lopsided with Dark-types (she already had two of them and was one herself if need be). The newly evolved Toxicroak.

That left a sixth slot in which any of a number of Pokémon could fit. A sixth attacker like Kleavor or Raichu or even Orthworm? A support like Castform or Audino?

It was time to move along.

Keiko breathed a sigh of relief when Sub mentioned that she could just snag back her Pokemon if they got hypnotized. She just hoped that technology didn't work on hybrids. But she snapped herself out of that train of thought and let Claydol teleport her alongside the rest of the team.

Freth and I perked up, and looked back for a second once Cera found her way into the headquarters, dressed in Ranger attire. “Wait. Cera? She actually went back?” I asked. “Well, color me surprised.”

“I’m more surprised she was allowed back after all of that crap years ago.” Freth commented.

”Okay, I am out of the loop.” Eris would finally chime in. “What is the story with Cera?”

“When this team got together, Cera was actually part of the rangers, dressed up and transformed like that to fit in. To blend in. It actually caused a lot of problems for us at first because she was trying to be a double-agent in a sense for us but there were severe loyalties issues that wasn’t exactly worked out before she tried to take on all of that and as such…was not exactly the greatest at it. It’s a long story. She effectively ditched them after all was said and done roughly around the time Sub took over the reigns to Snagem.” She explained.

“I see.” Eris said. “And by the way she looks now, I’m guessing there are still hard feelings. The rangers realize they were in the wrong in all of that, right?”

“Oh, they are very well aware as everyone in the regions were, but no one was able to tear them apart until we got together, though. They were supposed to have gone through a massive overhaul and restructuring after we dealt with them and there were bureaucratic forces to basically keep an eye on them and make sure they don’t go out of hand again that made them what they once were.” Freth said. “Like having a blasted sociopath of a leader of all the ranger squads.”

”Apparently I had missed out on a fair bit while I’ve been traveling Ultra Space.”

Freth and I stared to listen in to the remaining of Sub’s briefing and Freth couldn’t help but to grimace, taking out her SNAG to look at the clock. “…we’re probably going to miss the ceremony.” Freth said.

“It can’t be helped. Be sure you got Absol on you.” I said to her. We would then get ready and then got ready to depart with the rest of the team. We were going to need a ride; never been to that part of the world before.

"More like I'm surprised Spenser hasn't tried to stop her," Sol remarked.

"About that..." Cera started to remark, only to groan at the remark about Sub's hopes of Spenser showing up. "If anyone's going to show up, it's probably gonna be him somehow. But keep the Snag Machines ready, yeah. Had to be careful around the machines, even use the Styler a couple of times when the hypnosis tried to set in on Pichu here. Still, let's go, I can't guarantee how much time we'll have." She'd be quick to get back outside, already as geared up as she could be.

"Guess if anything, this will be a good chance for Liepard to be around. Maybe AychKay... ehhhhh." Sol shook his head. Though he felt HK might be resilient towards being hypnotized itself, he still wasn't sure about running that risk. He'd head back to his room briefly to get ready before coming back out.

"Er, I.... don't have any Dark-types?" Amaranth commented, feeling a sense of dread... and then sighing before making a note to go get her Snag Machine on the way out.

Aile looked at the others, then down to her belt, nodding. "Right. Well, let's rearrange the team." Aile would walk back to her room to tweak some things and get herself prepped for the mission.

Crystal frowned, thinking about her team. She had only one that could evolve into a dark type, and that one wasn't even close to getting there. Frowning again, the hybrid sighed and shrugged, going ahead and using Claydol on the immediate to head out.

Tsuki the Lunar Wind

Newbie Noob

PostPosted: Sat Apr 19, 2025 2:17 am

Tsuki was there in the common area, listening in with increased interest in the group when Sub began to talk about Almia and the Ranger Union. Snagem’s crossing with them years ago had been what had made him first join years ago, so one could imagine the anticipation of getting to relive that experience for himself. Were they taking advantage of Shadow Pokemon? Kicking babies? Having Shadow Pokemon KICK babies? But no, they were apparently reformed and useless at that. A part of him felt disappointed, but it wasn’t like Sub to gather everyone here just to waste their time.

True to his gut feeling, Tsuki was right. The Rangers were allowing via incompetence some new team to handle Cipher tech. “Honestly, after this last year, I’d like to break some of Cipher’s s**t. So I’m in.” He said from the back, a grin working up on his face. Who cared if the Ranger Union didn’t want them around? One way or another, the plan to go in hot and fast, blasting through Team Dim Sun’s defenses and destroying whatever legacy Ein left was something Tsuki was always going to be up for. By his side, his ever present Magby nodded in agreement. She had been training just as hard for something like this.

s**t, he didn’t even care who this operative was. Tsuki acknowledged Larrimore when he came in, but it was clear as day to anyone that saw him that the teen was like a person waiting to be allowed in a rage room. “A dark type to resist hypnosis? I have a Hypno, so he should cover that well enough. Hypnosis is their specialty.” Tsuki said, pulling out his phone to access his PC right there. Three of his Pokemon were already decided then: Maggie and Baja like always with Grumps there for sleep support. He’d need his old heavy hitters for this one, so Coffee and Terra were also welcome. Add in Snapdragon, because between his Scorbunny and the other (currently not retconned in) Pokemon didn’t have as much training personally under him.

Hopefully that’d be enough. Regardless of that, Tsuki walked towards the Claydol and took the teleport.

As the armored choppers land near HQ, their whirring blades finally coming to a rest after several hours of loud travel, there was one thing that was immediately clear to the group. SWIPE had come here first.

Normally a cozy refuge of zany slurpee adventures filled with GRAY's sardonic comments, a training room filled with willing participants, and a doctor ready to patch up any bumps and bruises that the gang may have had in the process was transformed into a military outpost. More teleportation scramblers lined every single wall of the building, the quickly becoming omnipresent hum here too as Looker, Agent WHITE, Kess, and Essentia led the parade into the building, several sets of agents and soldiers stopping to salute them briefly before shooting the Snagems a glowering look as they were lead inside.

To say the place was torn apart would be a understatement. Clearly, some of the members who were here had fought to try and defend the place, including a wide gouging burn mark where STAK had made a tremendous stand cutting straight through the main couch and part of the floor in the common area. Deo's grandmother's cakes and pastries from the kitchen to everywhere they were had been smashed and trampled, iced frosting made with love now little more than dirt smears defacing the altar that was HQ.

There was one room that seemed to elude them for the moment - and that was GRAY's Server Room. They had collared both it and the Stakataka, seemingly more out of frustration than anything as they tried everything in their disposal to get the rogue AI out of the computer system. They had managed to at least make it bleary and confused, but wresting full control required the Server Room proper. The massive iron door was hissing as arc welding blow torches were being applied to it, with little progress. Whatever Sub had made it out of it was going to take a lot more than a puny 5,500 degrees Farenheit to crack it.

Speaking of Sub, no other room was safe, as SWIPE guards were seen in his office as they filed by, dumping unceremoniously things off his shelves, files pulled from his desk, and other trinkets and knicknacks into big cardboard boxes labeled 'Evidence.' It left little doubt what was happening to each and every one of the member's rooms in the meantime.

Any of the individuals from the team, including GRAY, Doc Owl, and everyone else that was in HQ when the raid was taking place were rounded up, collared if they were a hybrid, and stuck into the seemingly decommissioned Training Room. The wiring for any of the commands for the room including generating opponents, targets, what have you had been eviscerated and thoroughly slashed and gutted, sparking wires strewn everywhere before turning it into what was essentially a temporary prison cell. As they walked through the building there were Armed SWIPE guards lining both sides of every door, the people's individual rooms included. Not a single spot or room was left undefended. For all intents and purposes, they had several hours while the mission was going on and the building at this point was very much thoroughly occupied.

Bringing their cargo home to roost, one of the soldiers pries open the Training Room door with a makeshift crowbar. They weren't completely without mercy as they did uncuff all of them as they shoved them through into the waiting arms of the members that had stayed behind. Any of them that had fought would be looking the worse for wear, having felt the loving embrace of Kess or Agent WHITE. They didn't uncollar them though, nor even hint at it, as they get pushed into their temporary home-away-but-not-really-away-from-home. Looker fixes them with a serious gaze as the last of them is pushed inside.

"I hope you understand now the seriousness of our investigation. Please cooperate and we will endeavor to make this as expeditious and painless as possible." He says, seemingly truthfully as his sad gray eyes fall on each of them in turn.

"We're in the middle of setting up a temporary room for questioning. Once we have that completed, I will come to each of you, one at a time, and we'll have some inquiries for you. Again, cooperation and honesty will be tantamount to make sure this goes as smoothly as it can." With that, he turns on his heel and departs, the Training Room doors snapping shut together with a 'hiss', leaving the group together as one with their thoughts.

CLANG BING BAM BOOM echoes from above the group as the antenna on top of their HQ apparently gets cut down and leveled, landing on the roof of the place unceremoniously. Anyone who checked their SNAG would not be surprised to see there was no signal and no communication in or out.

Silence and nothing more, the poor hybrid that once was strong and brave, now left inside his head. The collar giving Deo flashbacks, to the experimental chambers, to the room with the table. That table where humanity was ripped from Deo and his monstrous form forced upon him. Inside, he screamed and yelled for help and mercy from within. On the outside, he shivered in a fetal position with his fur turning cold and wet. This was not ideal for Deo, he could be in serious medical issue if this kept up. His catatonia was not helped as he was reliving every. single. horrifying. incident that happened at that lab where he was forced hybridized.

He slowly came to in the training room, his emotions were so wild that he backed into the corner and there he stayed, just rocking back and forth slowly. What he saw were the doors were made of bars, and the room was black and dirt was all over the floor. He did not see the fellow members, he did not see light. All he saw, was the holding cell he was in. What everyone else saw was a hybrid, trapped in his mind and his eyes giving a thousand yard stare.

Rachel allowed the arresting officers to cuff her, again offering no resistance and possibly gaining a little favor from the two that had accompanied her. Lu followed where she was directed to put Brian, refusing any aid from the humans that she could see. Only once he was situated in one of the choppers did she allow one of them to recall her to her ball, though she wasn't happy about it. Amber followed her own escort, offering no resistance as she didn't want to give them any reason to treat her harshly. Not that she needed to give them a reason; they didn't seem to like hybrids for some reason. Or was it just the ones that put up a resistance?

Upon arriving back at HQ, they were all unceremoniously herded into the Training Room and left there. Once she sensed they were safe, Lu let herself out, not wanting to leave Brian without some kind of support. Rachel didn't bother letting out any of her own team, despite knowing that Rainer would want to be out with her. Amber, keeping her promise, let Spooky out of his ball, warning him not to try anything as he rubbed his cheek against hers. There wasn't much they could do at the moment, so the trio, Brian aside, chose to just sit there and try to figure out why they were being detained, especially here of all places.

It happened so fast.

Its paws or claws—or at least that was the closest thing to them, they were weirdly all over the place—pounced on Monique, flattening her with more force than she thought was possible. It was a massive beast, weighing more than she did and towering over her by some 30 centimeters, sending her reeling enough to make her drop her Illusion. Her Malamar was attacked, packed up, put back in its Poké Ball, and neutralized.

And, for that matter, so was she. The Trainer of that weird, beastly Pokémon proved that he had just as much force. The collar, black and shiny and all too familiar an object in her time, was fastened, tight enough to make her know that it would not come off of her own will but not so tight as to choke her out of existence.

It felt like someone put her life on fast-forward for a moment. She was part of a line, shuffled in chains out the door; packed like cargo into a helicopter, its body encased in ebonite. As its massive blades whirled, the vessel lifted into the air, the fast-forward turned to slow motion. Mt. Kaʻanaʻana had been soaked like a Camerupt being bathed, its fire turned into a massive column of steam.

But that didn't mean it couldn't smolder as she closed her eyes, looking for a little rest and at least grateful to be out of the sweltering volcano.

~~~
It looked like any other night at Sub Rosa. There were patrons, there was dancing, and there were drinks. Monique saw herself twirling around the pole in the corner. Just like old times.
The din of the music was suddenly broken by an alarm noise. The lights immediately shifted from their soft and dim pinks to harsh, pure white, the house lighting. "Your attention please," a female voice came over the PA, metallic and cold. "Your presence is required in the Assembly Hall."
Monique was not a resident of Flower City, which was unusual for someone who worked in Flower City. She was one of only a handful of commuters. This had happened once or twice, and she had never had to go to these impromptu assemblies—nor would she have been allowed. They ruined the night's pay, but she just had to sit there or go home early.
But this time, she saw herself file out with the rest of them, almost listlessly. For nightclub patrons, they suddenly seemed subdued, single-minded. Theirs was but to do or—well, not die, but do. Everyone was shuffling up elevators and toward a massive auditorium, large enough to house every Flower Citian, filling the seats and waiting quietly, the murmur of a crowd more hushed than it might otherwise be.
Then, he walked out. King Faba took the stage and everyone stood and bowed in deep adoration. Monique was overcome with the same desire and felt her body forcing itself to bow, to make a gesture of reverence to someone she regarded as a tyrannical scumbag.
W-why? Monique thought to herself, her gaze finally catching something as she raised her head. A glimmer of black in the auditorium light. A glimmer around her neck, encasing, controlling...
~~~

She awoke from the nightmare in a start, unable to move much, still restrained and guarded. She looked around, down at the collar on her neck, and at the helicopter.

They don't know what these lead to, she could only think in the noisy cabin. And if they do, then this world should be afraid.

Monique found herself sitting, uncuffed but collared, in the darkened volume that was the Super Training Room, still smarting from the force of Type:Null's tackle. The lone lights sat up top, occasional sparks catching her eye from the side from the wires they cut.

Quietly, she thought about what she knew. This outfit called itself SWIPE, which was probably some acronym for something she had yet to know. They wanted to question Snagem for some reason, and they had gone to great lengths in search of "evidence" and had "questioning". In other words, they were acting like a law enforcement agency of questionable moral authority and apparently quite considerable resources.

She'd never heard of SWIPE, and that was why she refused to comply at first. Preemptive obedience never got anyone anywhere when the call was to obey someone you didn't trust or couldn't trust. She'd have done the same thing if some outfit calling itself Team Revolution or Team Aquos or some random name turned up and said "surrender to us". The Sheriff of New Po had to earn her keep and her authority. It wasn't handed to her on a silver platter overflowing with florins like it would be to a member of Faba's royal guard. They wouldn't have had to deploy that chimera of a beast if Monique had been able to trust them.

A Gholdengo's hoard of florins was not enough to grant Faba moral leadership, though it granted uniforms and soldiers and equipment that to some made it look like he was a leader. SWIPE had a hoard of florins, by the looks of it, that was the size of an entire region. But they still needed to prove they were worth trusting. And, right now, they were far from doing that.
