Vahn Fah No consideration that a ******** guy in iron casing with a friggin' boiler on his back might be extra susceptible to being blown up, let alone that I'm just trying to bring something unique to the table. actualy I was thinking exactly that when I noticed you and Fishy with your big suits, but that could just be because I'm a b***h whee

1) People are talking about ONE mech... because ONE mech would be kinda cool 2) Dante's list is in fact for historical accuracy and nothing else 3) It's ok for you to want to bring something interesting to the table... but setting up an army of steam-powered soldiers to automatically be judge and jury ISN'T new and interesting, but is, in fact, old and tiring. 4) Kiss my brass you cog sucker. How about instead of getting whiny, you DEFEND your army by stating how they would possibly be able to work right, hmm? A lot of the comments made are how your steam knights would be able to work instead of shooting them down. Thusly, pull your head from your tin-plated a** and lighten up.
5) How about we all keep having fun now, k?

Make me.
You've always had a problem with me and you just don't want me stomping around in your new playground now.
I shouldn't have to explain every single detail on how a steam powered suit of armor works if your not even going to take every single detail Dante was presenting to you for your "historical" items, you hypocritical gas giant.

*Snickers softly* Aww, he's getting testy. Cute.
Firstly, let me just say that I, in fact, WANT you in my new guild because I think you'd have neat ideas for characters.
Secondly, yes. I do have a problem with you and I think everyone who has ever stepped foot in here knows it, but that has nothing to do with this. You're just butt-hurt that I'm making a new Leviathan Guild as anyone who saw your posts could tell you.
Secondly part two, I'm able to put aside my dislike of you to allow you in this thing. Why do you think you're the co-owner of THIS guild? I think you're a power-hungry, whiny, egomaniac with some control and anger issues... but you're also brilliant, smart and have a mind full of wonderful ideas. You'd be an interesting dictator, to say the least.
Thirdly and importantly: I'm not making Dante fill out every tiny little piece of information of how a gun or artillery works because most people grasp the concept of a gun. Put bullet in front of explosive, bullet go very fast. Put explosive IN bullet to make bullet go boom after going real fast.
But guess what? I am making EVERYONE, including myself, state how something would work properly, theoretically. Example: Enki's airship. One square foot of hydrogen can lift one square ounce of mass... didja know that? Thusly, little tiny airships with lots of munitions won't work properly. A large, steam-powered machine with massive armor plating would be VERY VERY slow and be difficult to control. One could control it via radio-waves, but it'd have to be very close range and can only preform menial tasks *punch thing* *walk* *turn*
The warjack idea floating around: Based on their design, they'd be very impractical since they be very slow and severely top heavy... probably would topple over when they moved...
I don't need every single detail, but explaining how it COULD work would, you know, be nice so that you don't make a suit arm armor much akin to, oh, say Iron Man?

ED (or whatever the hell your name is). SHUT THE ******** UP. JESUS.
I think everyone here WANTS you to RP. I'm not even against you having this army of steam powered whatevers. I don't care, and you're the one making a big deal out of this THING. No one was insulting you or anything until you started acting like a ******** moron.
In other news, how is everyone's night going? 4laugh
EDIT: Let me clarify even further: I want you to have this army because it would pose a challenge. But I'd like to know at least some base physics and engineering for it. That's all.

Not that it is really my business, but if a New guild is being made in a Steampunk fashion, why don't we not bicker over it quite so much so it doesn't start out tainted with angst or animosity.
If you have a creative Idea and you're not sure how it would work, find a good steampunk description with some inventor references, Nikola Tesla, and Edison for instance, and find out how they made thier machines work, look into the style of the genre and find a way in that.

Som & Tenma: Thank you. That's what I was attempting to say, but my animosity and conflicting feelings about Ed sometimes get the best of me.
I don't mean to write off your idea Ed, but having a general idea of how they'd function would be helpful. Those things look really big and really heavy if made with steel or brass or whatever... the lightest metal they had then (as far as I'm aware of, someone feel free to prove me wrong) was aluminum which is light, yes, but weak.
You could have this "Army" but you'd have to be able to state how you had the materials to build them, explain (roughly) how they'd function and you wouldn't be able to be "law." Once you read the story, I'm sure you'll have no problems at all figuring out how you could go about having them.

If they are automatons, they don't need super strong armor, and Aluminum is light, but it's more durable than most people give it credit. But building a slimmer upper body and using a smaller steam engine would make it plausable. Edit: Also, I may be wrong, but with a Gear, piston, and pulley system, it wouldn't take a whole lot to completely protect it, Since most of the inner workings are metal themselves, it would have alot of it's own structure in the workings, add a little interior casement of a harder alloy around main components, like the gearbox and control center, and you'de have a light, tactfully armored weapon. A smaller boiler connected to a turbine that connected by belt or chain or gear to a 'gear box' so to say, and then from there directed the torque of the turbine into usable energy for arm, leg and other movements. And using a bit of electricity to control that gearbox or another power source with a Controlling source either overhead or one with a wide enough grid range to keep the knights moving. A smaller airship with small signal amplifiers connected to a main place that runs the knights. A kind of mechanical brain could be involved, different gears turning on a Copper coil wired engine would make the gearbox move the energy in different ways. Because thanks to Tesla and Edison and other inventors of this time, the electric engine was made, a bit bulky at first, but usable. The engine is basically a piston, with 2 different poled magnets attached to it, inside a casing, wrapped in Copper wire, when a current is run through the wire it makes an electromagnet out of the casing, and the polarization changes making the piston swing in different ways, a different signal could move a different engine enabling a different part of the gearbox so another part may move. It would be basic movement, but when you have someone made of Flesh, surrounded by 5 or 10 of these, they aren't going to be less intimidated because it can move only simply. Edit: Maybe a gearbox something like ThisTHat is the clutch system out of a steampunk creation. Using pistons to move gears into the path of the Turbine driven gear, so that it got the power from that source. The hardest part would be a light, but efficient fuel to burn to make the steam, coal is heavy, and doesn't last as long as it would need to. But i'm sure something can be thought of for it.

If you wanted an Iron Man style thing, you wouldn't be as sleek, but a back mounted steam engine, transferring torque to gears or pulleys would allow a mildly bulky suit to be usable. This for instancecould use a gear system, using short range controllers inside of the suit, near the hands could use a gearbox as well to lock some gears and give other power, to give a kind of 'enhanced' strength within the suit making it an easier thing to move. Probably move the engine a little lower on the back so someone doesn't just push them over, a little closer to the center of balance.

.... What the hell part of an armor would you want to "power up" with a steam engine anyway? O_o;
If anything, the steam engine's power would be necessary to support its own weight. D:
PS: Tenma, forget aluminium. As a basic rule, if it's not brown, it's not steampunk.

Bronze it is xp
Just giving suggestions, and the steam power would be to hold up it's own weight and accomplish movement.

But you can move and support your own weight in a regular armor, non?
So adding a steam engine to it would be kinda like sticking a steam engine to a sword. Sure, it looks good, but .... why?

You put an engine on a sword so it's heavier.
Nothing like cutting somebody then smashing their face in with an engine block.
